It will also propagate from a leaf cutting, although it takes a while. I took home a leaf from a farm tour that the farmer had broken off and passed around the group, put it in water on my kitchen window sill just to see what happened, and it sprouted roots! Popped it into the ground and now I have a beautiful comfrey plant!

I've propagated the heck out of mine. Out of the 27 roots that I got from you I've propagated at least a hundred plants from it and have given some away and use a lot of it for composting, making teas and chop and drop.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience! My Daddy used to say that knowledge not shared is wasted because when you pass on, the knowledge dies too. Sharing it is a joy (when others use and share it, too), and then that knowledge cannot be completely forgotten. Every day we do not learn something, teach something, or try something new, we begin to stagnate. Comfrey is something I have no experience with yet, but "everyone" seems to have at least a little something to say about it, so I'm feeling the urge to give it a go. There's really not a reason to not try it out now - I feel like y'all have demystified it a bit more for me. Why not plant it in areas where it just looks like any other weeds growing in my yard? It'll then be there any time I or my family/friends need it. 🥰

Thanks to y'all, I realized the extreme potential for this plant. Tried popping seeds with no luck; however, my neighbor shoveled one of their small plants (just like y'all) for me. Now I have five growing around my property in different places. Next year I'll have 25, and so and so on. Much appreciated! Edit: I planted my cuttings in 5-gallon plastic pots with worm castings and Coast of Main's No-till blend. When I put them in the ground, I layered the bottom of the hole with more castings, leaf mold extract and more COM soil with more extract to water/set the plants. They love it!

Literally thousands in just a few years from a dozen root cuttings. The Buns in The Rabbitry go nuts for it. We finally, after 4+ years, ditched the commercial bagged pellets and Comfrey is good for 20% od the food we raise to feed the growouts for the freezer.

How did the fermented feed go down? I've been feeding it to all ours for years now. More solid droppings and the birds just seem to look healthier. I have also started to mix some in with the pigs soaked grass nuts as they love grain but can't digest too much of it. Hardly any grain comes out the other end now 🤣 in all the years I've been feeding it I've only ever had 2x 5gallon buckets go Slimey. And that, I'm sure, was because of the heat wave we've just had. Don't think I'll ever feed them unfermented or unsoaked again. xx 🇬🇧

@@dawntheodore Actually they like it better fermented. At first they were skeptical but only a few minutes as I fed them later in the day with the first batch of fermented feed, so they were hungry lol I have thrown out dry feed on the ground just to see what they do. They start to eat it but always go back to fermented. It is a win for my chickens. Thank you for asking!

The comfrey I bought from Perma Pastures in June is coming up nicely! Some plants are further along than others, but almost all are the roots planted have sprouted. It has been a dry summer in Minnesota at least in our area, I've watered every couple days, don't want a huge water payment. We just had a good soaking rain this morning, finally! So, I'm sure all the rest of the root stems will be pushing up through the soil in a day or two. Thank you again, Perma Pastures!! The comfrey salve is awesome too!! Prayers for Danny & Wanda too. I regarded my humble gifted comfrey an invasive plant a few years after planting. I was warned, but didn't appreciate how it does take over. It will grow in the most adverse conditions and is all but impossible to eradicate if it roots in rocky soil. After years of trying to remove it, I learned to appreciate its value in composting, etc. (There are contraindications with human consumption). Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

Be careful growing from seed. Most comfrey that is used in permaculture is from a sterile variety. If you let a seed-grown variety go to seed, it will completely take over. It’s not terrible, you just have to make sure you slash it down before it makes seeds. 🤙

You’re awesome! Your approach is genuine and selfless. I recently picked up some comfrey root cuttings and they seem to be doing well here. We have clay soil in the Ozark region. I’d like to propagate in the future, but look forward to purchasing from you to show support. I feel like the more comfrey we have, the better! I’ve been a fan of yours for a while now and recommend your channel to others. I’ve been subscribed on my personal channel for a while, but just subscribed from our content channel as well. Keep doing what your doing! Thank you.

i have a lot of success cutting it down to ground and covering with cardboard and wood chips/mulch if i want to kill it and not dig it up. sometimes i even put a paver over the cut down ones. i've planted 3-4 where i decided later they were really in the way, so those are the ones i killed off. you could douse them with a bit of vinegar before covering with cardboard to ensure they die also. they are def tough plants and want to grow.

I noticed when i was doing my research on different fruit trees comfrey was a prefered companion plant for some and not for others. Not sure why or if someone was just being lazy. I like comfrey for the simple fact its great fodder feed while also medicinal for goats.

Love me some comfrey. But my comfrey does so much better next to my chicken coop then any where else on my property. So I think for me it does need a good quality soil it grows so much better. Thank you for the video!!

Here in dry Iowa, the comfrey does well in full shade. The plants in full sun need more water than we can give them. Wondering if I should move them and when.

If you leave it in that spot it will continue to bush out. If you transplant (I’ve had success in spring, summer and fall) you’ll spread it everywhere - that’s what we do!

I've had two separate comfrey plants, they were doing good growing and looked healthy, until they got to a certain size and died. Two separate times this has happened. I would love to try it again, maybe in a different place.

Comfrey is better known as Bone Knit. It is a medicinal herb and is fantastic at healing injuries. It works well to give chickens and other animals what they need to heal themselves. It is also one of the best fertilizers around once left to rot in water and then used as a fertilizer tea

🙏🙏 Prayers for your friend Danny! Hope he gets well soon! Thank you for sharing your knowledge....I appreciate it! I've been meaning to get my medicinal plants going. This year has been about starting a new garden at a new home. The soil is compacted and it has not been easy. Due to the soil conditions Thistle has taken over and is Everywhere! I never knew such a weed existed that was so hard to get rid of! lol. I'll just keep on trying though! lol.

I got some comfrey and it still has not come up after 2 months, I'm not sure what I did wrong, or if its the terrible heat, and the terrible droughts we have had here in TX. I do water at least once or 2x a day. I went ahead and ordered some seeds from a etsy shop and I'm hoping those come up for me. Thank you for what you all do.

I bought ten crowns on Etsy for 9.99 plus free shipping about a month ago and they are out and looking great here in San Antonio Texas. I did notice that the ones in a sunny location with a 50% shade cloth look bigger and happier right under my star fruit tree which is actually the one I’m protecting from our scorching sun

I'm not sure if the reason pigs need a lot of kelp is because of the iodine content. However, black walnuts also have a lot adequate amount of iodine as well.
