As a gay man, this just seems like the very, VERY awful conclusion of some things they’ve been doing for awhile now. They’ve been introducing LGBT or other minority reps not as characters, but as identities. Whenever they introduce one of these characters, they form their whole personality around their minority status because apparently they think that is representation. I just want characters who have actual character and just happen to be gay for example. And the thing is, we’ve also been shown that these newer characters can work when written well. After being given to other writers, previously one-note characters like Riri Williams or Bobby Drake (who was just written as “gay” while dropping every other story he could have) were way improved and I’m now big fans of theirs. But now we have Safespace and Snowflake and I’m just sighing and shaking my head because I thought we were past this.
@zzzcocopepe4 жыл бұрын
They should intro a gay character like how they intro'd wolverine, as a hijink in the relationship of Jean and cyclops. Obviously that's kind of degrading to gay men still, but it's realistic. A lot of "straight" men have refused to acknowledge that they're bi and they're still on apps like grindr hooking up with gay men, playing head games and screwing with their emotions and self esteem.

AntiangelRaphael yeah like I said Bobby definitely started off one note, but ever since Dawn of X started his sexuality has just been a part of him while his character has gone back to how it was. Now instead of being a ladies’ man, he’s a mans’ man, and that works pretty well for me.

I think Safespace's power is interesting. A self sacrificing power that maybe reflects its owner? I imagine that Safespace had to defend his sibling a lot during childhood. From peers and maybe even parents. Like, to comfort his sibling he would wear the same clothes as Snowflake (hence the skimpy get up). From the art it looks like Snowflake relies on their brother a lot. The names could have been given by the teens who saw their powers. Snowflake can create shurikens shaped like snowflakes. Safespace creates shields to protect other people. But I am probably hoping for too much. The moment that soy boy simp stated that Snowflake is non binary and nothing else... yea..

(The most recent really well crafted female characters I've seen are the puppet characters in Dark Crystal - Age of Resistance). I actually don't give a damn what a character's sex, race, sexuality or gender is. Yes, a variety's good. But what I care about is that the character's well written. Am I drawn in by them? The fact that you are a straight cis white man doesn't mean you can't talk about this kind of stuff. I'm gay and Ia totally agree with you..
@ClockworkChandelure4 жыл бұрын
Yeah. We need to get rid of this ide that you need to be a specific minority to talk about their issues. Of course being gay or black or trans would give someone more perspective on those issues, but it doesn't mean that a white cishet dude can't be informed on them all the same and offer his opinion. For example, I'm no albino but I'm extremely passionate about anti albino discrimination in India and sub saharan Africa.
@fredithegeroo9064 жыл бұрын
As a trans man, I second this. I have many different types of characters, and quite a few of them happen to be marginalized groups. BUT; I happened to make CHARACTERS. Not STEREOTYPES. First, there's Stephen. He is an explorer, an excellent archer, he's fast, and incredibly kind in nature. He happens to be mixed; he's half black. But his race only matters when I draw him. Story wise? Nope. Next is Rhonda. She's a doctor; earned her degree. She's an adopted mother, and very sporty; she loves soccer as a hobby. She happens to be lesbian. This only is apparent when she's with her partner, Chloe. Then there's Nat. Nat is tall, he loves to crack jokes, he is chill in nature, but is an extreme exercise jockey. No big shocker, he's strong. Nat happens to be a trans man, post op. He doesn't act or talk like the cliche. Hell, even in drawing him, Nat doesn't look anything like the Tumblr fetishization of trans people. Because that isn't realistic. It is fine to have marginalized CHARACTERS, but you have to put thought into their CHARACTER. The marginalized attributes are an afterthought. Like when people get to know me, or talk with friends, they say stuff like "Oh, that's just Luciano. He's an artist, and plays the piano. He's the short guy over there." While finding out that I'm transgender would merely be an afterthought, because I don't push it. I merely brought it up here to prove this is ridiculous. It's possible to salvage designs, but to make the names insults doesn't help anything. Period. Hell; the abilities sound cool. Being able to summon ice crystals to create ninja stars? Why not reflect that? Because being a twin, I will tell you that we don't wear the same things. Period. We stopped that trend when we were about 5. I've seen some epic redesigns. Marvel, get TRULY Woke; this means put ACTUAL THOUGHT into these characters, and make their differences not the only thing about them. Kinda like how my friends see me. I'm not seen as the one trans guy in the friend group. I'm a guy friend who happens to be trans. Even still, there's more to me. There needs to be more, of Marvel refuses to fix the names at the very least. There are some badass names I've seen people come up with, and some kickass redesigns. But if even that's too, add MORE TO THEM other than the fact that Snowflake is Nonbinary; what type of person are they like? What is their homelife? What is their relationship with their brother? What kind of friends? Kinda like in Ant Man and the Wasp, we actually see times of Ant Man being himself, outside of being a hero. You know... what he's like. It's a neat contrast, and interesting to see. Snowflake would be no different here. Because just making characters like this walking stereotypes is worse than leaving them out entirely, because stereotyping people is making fun of them. I for one take time to develop my characters all the same. Because that's all I think of when making them; character. Your race, sex, gender identity, age, you get the point, are facts about you. Making a whole character's existence based on one trope or stereotype is *never* a good idea.

Plus by making Safespace a cis man, large and buff, wearing pink, it just makes Snowflake look like a woman. Even though they're not. But they're literally labeled as "opposites" by the creators themselves, so everyone is going to see the big, strong, pink man and come to the obvious conclusion that the "opposite", a small, smooth, blue person, is the woman. They could've just made them both non-binary and this issue would've been averted entirely. Or they could've made _neither_ of them non-binary, and instead have Safespace be a woman and Snowflake be the guy. Both of them would've been gender non-conforming. People usually don't picture female superheroes as large, heavy, and muscular, or male heroes as being small and fragile. That would've at least been a neat idea. But no. Just make _one_ of them non-binary and completely ruin any thematic purpose they had going for them.

Personally, I think the character designs for Snowflake and Safespace are overall just bad. I dont have a problem with the fact Safespace has a pink color scheme to him... the bright florecesnt pink right next to Snowflake's florescent blue is like an assault on my eyes. Maybe just tone down the brightness on Safespace's hair (maybe more of a rose gold look?), eyes and outfit and make Snowflake's hair/eyes/outfit more of a powdery blueish white? They can still be pink and blue but the flourescent blue and pink dont work very well together. Also... why not make Safespace rock some awesome pink dread ala neo yokio? I mean... dreads are pretty gender neutral and a non binary guy with long hair in dreads would be kinda neat. I dont know how I would redesign outfits but something about how short the leg area is bothers me. I think maybe a fitted jacket could work for the top portion of the outfit, but i for the life of me cannot think of a good way to fix the pant area. I could maybe sketch this out later but my drawing skills are not the best. Not terrible but not quite where i want to be i guess. I tend to draw mainly women with curvy features so when i go out of my default it gets a bit wonky sometimes. But this could definately be a project for me to do later.

Compare the way bodies, objects, and backgrounds are drawn in any of these shows, and they're all different. That's what people like this feel like; they are their identity personified, and I cannot even be bothered to care for them. I'm also an amateur writer and I always found the best way to write diversity was to make characters and then decide what parts of them I can swap to another race/religion/sexual preference/gender/etc. that won't destroy what makes their character who they are and then do it.
