The latest MCU movie is The Eternals. How close is it to the original Jack Kirby comics? What does it take from other Marvel comics? This video gives you a comparison, looking at the Eternals themselves, including Ikaris, Sersi and Thena, the Celestials, and the other Marvel characters like Dane Whitman. It also explains the two post credits scenes.

One thing you left out was kind of important is that Kirby's other main influence for both the Eternals and his Fourth World works was, "Chariots of the Gods" by Book by Erich von Däniken. You can see this in the idea of extraterrestrials being mistaken for gods by humans.

Honestly when Marvel announced Eternals, I was very confused. I didn't remember them being that big of an influence on Marvel Comics when I was growing up and barely even knew who they were. While I greatly appreciate more of Jack Kirby's AND Jim Starlin's work coming to life on the big screen, I still find it very odd that they took such a huge gamble on a relatively unknown property.

Minor correction: The movie 2001 was not based on the novel. Both the novel and the film were somewhat based on Arthur C. Clarke's story "The Sentinel," and both were worked on more or less concurrently. The book is, in a way, closer to a novelization of the film, but even that isn't quite accurate. It's a case of two works by the same creators (Clarke wrote the film with Kubrick, and some of Kubrick's ideas informed Clarke's book) exploring the same (or similar) ideas and themes at the same time in different media.

I really liked Jack Kirby's Eternals when it came out. The comic had a lot of really interesting ideas, and I really liked how they eventually tied it in with the rest of the Marvel universe. If the trailer for the movie had not had the title "The Eternals" slapped on it, I would have never guessed that that film and the comic were even connected. While I haven't seen it yet it's looks to be the most "loosely" adapted of all the Marvel films so far.

I am afflicted with a purist reflex when it comes to the visual design in comics, in cases I felt they worked, and Kirbyesque designs are invariably scrapped in the flicks. Occasionally, altering costume designs is in order, but, usually, imo, when something LOOKS good, you don't mess with it. I think most of Kirby's stuff should be visually translated in movies more faithfully than they are. Instead of turning everything into NASCAR.

I loved the movie and a Comic Tropes is the perfect followup. Chris is that friend you can unwind with. It was funny realizing the beach battle was essentially Flash, Batman, and Wonder Woman fighting Superman, but by then with a completely different connection to them as people. And I love that they didn't hold back from the cataclysmic scale of the climax. Once again the world was saved but irrevocably changed. The current Eternals run by Kieron Gillen has been quite enjoyable. It's mostly centered on Sprite and Ikaris, who is in a more noble defender role, but characterized single-mindedness that also informs the MCU Ikaris. It makes sense the most physically powerful Eternal would be the one with narrowest focus.

Eh, it's more complicated than that. One just happened to get released before the other, neither is the "original".

8:03 Quick note, Kieron Gillen's Eternals features Sprite as a girl. Something about the resurrections of Eternals always making some changes.
@ajiththomas2465
@ajiththomas2465 2 жыл бұрын
Personally, that's always made sense to me. I mean, all Eternals are capable of Matter Manipulation, so it only seems natural that they could change their gender if they felt like it. But from what I remember, when an Eternal is "killed", their "soul" basically gets transported to their Activation Machine where their new body gets created (although it takes a while) and from there, the Eternal can decide to change their appearance including skin color and gender (Sprite is a sort of exception in that they could change gender but not really their base looks, always looking like a child). That's basically how I understood it. One thing that has confused me though is Eternals and their breeding habits. Like, I've heard conflicting sources about their breeding and reproduction thing. On one hand, I've heard that Eternals basically can't reproduce with one another but they can reproduce with other species but their offspring would only be like the non-Eternal parent's species and won't inherit any Eternal powers. So the children of an Eternal and a human would result in humans with at best, peak human physical abilities. But if that's the case, how exactly was Zuras the father of Thena then? The other source I heard is that Eternals can breed with each other and stuff but as nature's way of balancing the scales, their reproduction rate is extremely, extremely low. Like, a lot of species evolve faster than it takes for Eternals to reproduce, _that_ low of a reproduction rate. Although that makes me wonder why they never just came up with some technology or found some magic that they could use to help them with their fertility problems. Do you get what I mean by this?
@jakepalermo9181
@jakepalermo9181 2 жыл бұрын
@@ajiththomas2465 Yes I do, but I think it might have to do with the Celestials or the collective unconscious the Eternals share more than anything else.
@ajiththomas2465
@ajiththomas2465 2 жыл бұрын
@@jakepalermo9181 So do you think that Eternals can reproduce with each other or can new Eternals only be made by the Celestials? Like, how is Zuras the father of Thena? Did he reproduce with a female Eternal in order to have Thena? Or was Thena created by the Celestials and gifted the role of being Zuras' "daughter"? And why haven't the Eternals figured out a way, through advanced technology or with the help of magic users, to increase their fertility and reproduce more Eternals?

My problem with that is it makes the previous stories stupid. If Sprite could have changed her appearance from the beginning, then she didn't have to wipe the others memories and all the previous runs starting with Gaiman don't make sense anymore.

I saw this movie today and had so much fun. Now, I have seen a lot of comments here complaining that the movie did not follow Jack Kirby's style, but honestly that didn't bother me. I do love his style, but I'm not sure how well it would translate into live action, particularly the costumes. It can work, but it's tricky. I swear people nowadays want to deify Jack Kirby, and anyone that alters his style is a blasphemer. Chill out people. He was "the King," not "the Almighty."

Thanks for the delightfully comprehensive recap! I loved the film, so this was a breath of fresh air after wading through all the bewilderingly negative KZbin reviews. I hate to sound like a gatekeeper, but it seems like folks who are more familiar with the comics (or at least have heard of how integral the Celestials are to the Marvel Universe) tend to like the film more... I guess I was just expecting a 2008-style post-credits scene, because I thought that was Nick Fury's voice. I guess I'll have to listen more closely during my next viewing...

I have good memories of Makkari from Mark Gruenwald's Quasar. Wanting to be the fastest was a fun idea to include in a comic that had the main character's dad's corpse was used by the main character's mentor. The race to the moon issue was a lot of fun. You can hand that to a kid and they'll want to know more about all of the runners. The race near the end of the series where the analog for Barry Allen is beaten was tragic. I don't know if Marvel ever did a story that resolved the "too fast" status.

I'm glad to hear someone say the movie is good, I may go see it now. Every other opinion I've seen or heard has been to call it garbage. I am disappointed, but not surprised, that they didn't stay closer to Jack Kirby's original characters. I've always been an eternals fan, I had some eternals books when I was very young.

Thank you for yet another great video. I'm a little surprised you don't mention the ongoing series by Kieron Gillen, Esad Ribic, Guiu Vilanova and Matthew Wilson, as it to me, is easely the most impressive and interesting Eternals story arc. To me, it is one of the best graphic novel series ever. I highly recommend it. The storytelling is intricate and the art is out of this world :) With kind regards Thomas

I liked the film a lot. As you pointed out, not your usual Marvel fare (which is fine by me). I think the fact that it is not your typical superhero film made it quite challenging to adapt to the big screen. I enjoyed the dynamic and tension between the main characters and wish that they had developed the Deviants more. Having them literally evolve on the screen after absorbing an Eternal’s essence was interesting and it seemed as though they just scratched the surface with that plot point. I wish they’d carried that further…perhaps in the next film.

I actually am a 616 Eternals fan, who loved when they were used much more in the 80s. Thor #300 and the 1986 limited series were big favorites of mine. In the MCU, I felt the changes were way too drastic from 616, and the pacing irked me a bit. Kinda took away from caring what happened to them. Which seemed to be what the MCU ultimately wanted.

Was there any explanation (reasonable or otherwise) for why Makkari is deaf? Seems odd that Celestials would create a being that lacked hearing. If the deafness occurred as a result of injury, then wouldn't Ajak's healing abilities be able to remedy this?
