Of all the videos that I have seen regarding the job as an airline pilot, this video disclosed more information than any of the previous vids I have watched. Many of them will hint at who they work for, what they make, and the perks, and attribute the vagueness to the airline that employs them(and it's not a jab at any of them either). Quick, succinct, and informative. Thanks!

Excellent presentation on the life of a Commercial Pilot. As with any profession, you start at an entry level position with a Regional and gradually work your way up to flying for a Major Carrier based on your performance. If all goes as planned, you find yourself in the right seat of a 737 or similar aircraft. Upon completion of your apprenticeship as a First Officer, you are eligible for promotion to Captain where you hopefully remain until retirement! Pay and benefits are excellent but be prepared for strenuous preparation obtaining the necessary ratings until the opportunity comes along! It is quite demanding to become a Commercial Pilot but the rewards are well worth the sacrifice!

From someone who has done flying before...GET IN THE COCKPIT A.S.A.P. to see if flying is what you not just want to do, but want to do as a career. Go up with different instructors at different times and with different aircraft to get a feel of different aircraft and different instructor personalities. DO A POWER ON STALL at least a couple of times and overcome that fear of falling and losing control of the aircraft. You have my absolute word in front of God that being in a cockpit flying is a completely different world that requires you to absorb every grain of it and the flying environment takes times to really get used to...VERY IMPORTANT...Get a college education AND in a major that makes YOU happy...NOT anyone else. You do NOT need to major in engineering or math either.

You can expect your first year salary about $40,000. That doesnt include your bonus so bonus included about $60,000 your first year. Then about $42,000 your second year and then by that time you should be upgraded to captain making about $50,000-60,000 a year. Only going up from there.

Once you get to a major as an FO, your first year salary is around $80,000 (If you go to a legacy carrier) and your second year about $135,000 (If you are at a legacy carrier)

I'm taken Physics, English, and math right now, and ofc Chemistry. I passed English, math and geometry last year (th10 grade) I did really good. If I keep it up and I get A's or B's On all the subjects I said above, will I be able to be a pilot? If yes then do i still need to go to college and study Math, Physics, and science?

If you are looking into commercial flying as a means to up your paycheck then flying isn't for you. A pilot has to have a real interest in aviation and a love of flight. A beginning first officer on a regional airline amakes less than a teacher's salary.

Rata 4U I agree but flying cargo for FedEx or UPS is one of the best airline jobs you can get, if you get in there you're pretty much set for the rest of your career. If you said he couldn't get a job with a regional airline then that would be surprising and worrisome. The biggest thing in the industry is hours, you need at least 1,500 just for regionals to look at you so that could also be one of his problems.

For all of you young guns that want to become pilots. START EARLY. Use scholarships to your advantage and study! You will have a horrible time becoming a pilot if you start out in your 20s. Debt will be a thing if you dont think wisely. He is right; there are pilots that make 300k a year and even though you start out at around 15-80k a year, airlines have HUGE hiring bonuses for new pilots because of a pilot shortage so make sure to start young!

@MD88Pilot
@MD88Pilot 6 жыл бұрын
tony stark Well it really depends on where you are. If you are in the states, I would recommend joining Civil Air Patrol as it will provide a much cheaper way to soloing and earning your PPL. Also if you do good in school which is a MUST. You can apply for scholarships that will quite literally pay for your flight training, so you can earn your PPL or even more like additional ratings. If you are older I would consider joining the military as a reserve or officer (Air force obviously) You will get a certain amount of flight hours per month with them as it is required.

Hi, I was just wondering if it is a smart move to go to college and major in something that isn’t related to aviation and then go to flight school after? I have college paid for already so all I’d really need to worry about is the cost of flight school. I’m asking this because I know that the majors don’t care what you study in college as long as you have a bachelors (for most) and maybe it would be a good idea to have something to fall back on. Thanks
@MD88Pilot
@MD88Pilot 6 жыл бұрын
Aidan Verastegui It is better to start early. It is much easier that way. like I said, get scholarships and pay for it that way instead of being an adult with a decent paying job not only paying for student loans but bills and flight training.
@dieprideman
@dieprideman 6 жыл бұрын
You won’t have a horrible time if you start in your 20’s...finished my degree at 22 than did flight training which took another year to acquire all of my ratings. Right before my 25th birthday I met my hiring minimums and got a FO position at a regional. My training class had about 30 guys ranging between the age of 24 and 40 for the career changers. You need to be at least 23 to be eligible for your ATP anyway. I would say get a college degree in a field outside of aviation first before investing in flight training in case your medicals get revoked or you can’t fly anymore and have to do something else. Aviation is expensive to enter and fiscal conservatism is always encouraged. In the US pilot pay is steadily rising so most pilots shouldn’t have an issue managing their money unless they’re stupid. Also it is NOT recommended to join military if you’re older there’s an age limit. Scholarships almost don’t exist in aviation mostly small grants that won’t even cover a ppl it’s almost all private or school loans. If you aren’t a pilot don’t give out false information.

What he said about flight benefits isn't totally true. The employee from 1 airline doesn't get to fly for free on another airline. Most airlines do offer very good discounts to other airline employees but it's only if space is available. The airlines own employees do get priority, so it can be very difficult in that case to find a seat.

Sccratlanta No US airlines have round dials anymore, with the exception of maybe (Trans Air and Sulchuck, sp?)out of Alaska and Hawaii. WOW, some people are just misinformed!! Bet none of these guys are pilots. Well let me clarify. Right know theres a pilot deficit, its all in the regional and CFI slots. Basic pay of 15k is a thing of the past. CFI entry is at least 30k a year with regionals "ATP" minimums 50k a year. Please DM me if you have your CFI or ATP minimums and ill send you directly to recruiters that are willing to pay that much or even more. Stop this BS of 20k or less a year. If you currently work for a company or regional that pays that much give me the name and/or school you currently work for verification!! Its funny how many people dont state the airlines/flight school that pay that little. Oh and by the way, the general rule of thumb for airline pilots go "if you arent wiling to relocate to a base of operations for that dream job then forget about pay" Thanks and hope this helps aspiring pilots!!

Shelby Jean it’s basically as the name applies “base of operations”. Airlines usually have bases in strategic locations. For example American Airlines has bases of operations in KDFW, KMIA, KLAX, KJFK, and KORD. These bases act as “hubs” to which flight “generally” start/end. If you want more information on where airlines bases are located please go to pilotcareercenter.com for more info.

In any event, I hope by now you have moved on to better equipment and with a major, if you choose to.

I’m a Junior in high school Don’t know what to do for a job career 😰😰 first I wanted to a pilot, then I change my mind now I wanted to be a engineer working on a oil rig...after this video now i think I want to be a pilot, idk.....and I’m running out of time plus I’m going to join the military so that they can pay for my college.... IM RUNNING OUT OF TIME😰😰. Can you guys help 1=pilot 2=working on a oil rig

I was in a postion much like yourself. (I graduated 2017 from high school) I had no idea what I wanted to do but if you do wanna fly, GO RIGHT TO A FLIGHT SCHOOL. Just because in the airlines seniority is the only thing that matters. Get into a regional airline as fast as you can then worry about the college degree. Right now Im a MEI/CFI/CFII and its working out great for me. On track to be at the airlines shortly after I turn 21

More money?? There are senior airline pilots that make $500k a year and work 2 trips in a month. Maybe it's more training to be a pilot but it doesn't even feel like training cause its fun. And more time off being an engineer?? Don't they work 40 hours a week? An airline pilot can only fly at the most 100 hours a month and 1,000 hours a year. thats a lot less time then going to a boring 9-5 job monday-friday

@uncleruckus2867 6 жыл бұрын
engineer on oil rig is usually 2 months on 2 months off on a ship its 4 on 4 months off and 500k are you insane? not even in aus dollars ! look at 15 year captain with jet blue , virgen usa 220 dollars an hour 1000 legal per year = 220k plus some per diem bonuses maybe 250k a year china about same 2 trips a month equals 100 hours ? and to make that big bucks will take at least 20 years\ NO guarantee look at BLS web site for pilot job predicition next 10 years "in lower wage regionals there will be job opportunities but those applying to major airlines will face stiff competition its like a kid playing little league "keep practicing johnny someday you'll play 2nd base for the yankees" yeah its possible but not likely dude do whatever ya want if i were 18 id go in army and be a truck driver for 3 years gain experience come out at 21 and start making 80k a year while you are still in college

@@bilal1.z understood. I by no means have money for this. The school I am applying to thankfully allows me to work and fly at the same time. I refuse to take out a loan this early. With that being said. You have to push yourself because you will regret it if you dont. Sometimes I get discouraged when I think about it but I try to look at the light at the end of the tunnel. So my friend do not be discouraged and dont entertain any thoughts of failure. We are all in this together 🙂

I'm taken English, science, math, and physics right now. I have a couple of questions.. did you go to college? If no then should I go to college and get a degree on Physics math and science or English or go to a flying school? Or do both?

Spent 20 years flying, left the industry 15 years ago. The money when I stated was 1k to 500. Dollars per month IF you got paid.Big IF . Gradually it got better , but I decided to make various investments over my career and work at those endeavours and leave bus driving\flying, ; for something more in line with my university academics. I ended up flying a 737 in the end . Let me assure you flying for an airline is a crap job. Pilots were treated as disposable tampons over the last 25 years - hence the predicament today. Seems glamorous, but it’s a huge grind. If the economy turns , your let go. HR run most airlines today. Yes there are some huge money flying for Arab airlines , BUT- have you ever worked for an Arab? Nightmare!!! Find better options if you can.

How many of you remember Colgan Flight 3407 that crashed in Clarence NY back in 2009? The co-pilot made just over $17,000 the previous year and was working a second job at a coffee shop. The Captain made just over 50K. If you go to these private flight schools the regionals who hire you know that pilots are desperate to build hours and experience and they can pay low because pilots will take it. Jet Blue has a hiring program now for potential pilots. Very selective.

Yeah but driving a truck is a lot more work and your working longer hours driving a truck and not getting paid as much. Once you make it to a major airline, your second year pay is $135,000 and there has never been a time in the history of aviation when there has been a better time to fly for an airline. And where are you getting 7 years of hard work from?

Uncle Ruckus ha, sure they do. Average pay is about 33k a year for the first couple years. And you’re working 80 hours a week. And that’s why there is a huge shortage of drivers. I drove for 7 years, best years about 65k.

@@badghoul I'm not going to go into detail, but suffice to say that his estimate of $250,000 for a major airline Captain is much lower than anyone at my major airline earns. I've flown with FO's who have earned much more than that. Most people would be in shock if they heard what some of our top earners hit (takes a lot of seniority, desire, and know-how to reach those levels).

I don't think he is making $90,000 when he is 29 years old. Usually, you have to have A LOT of experience and you would not be flying on a 737 by then. A 60k income is compresensve with his age.

A pilot s not allowed to take photo or video on company plane. I am surprise he earned $90,000. That would be the top rate for a 10 year Captain in U.S. commuter airline. A first year officer would start at $30,000 - $40,000 in 2018.

Yes lodging and meals are paid when away from base. Airlines pay for hotel and you get per diems for meals, they are mostly paid by hour away from base, or by breakfast, lunch,dinner, overnight depending on the airline.
