As a student pilot or flight instructor, there's a lot you don't learn about becoming an airline pilot until you're doing the job EVERY DAY! While I love my job, there are a few pros and cons you should be prepared for. Here are the top 10 things I wish I'd known, or had better preparation for, before becoming an airline pilot. (Cockpit scenes filmed under Part 91 with approval of Envoy Air, Inc.)
The videos I produce are the first example of an airline approved, comprehensive view of becoming an airline pilot. Each video is about a specific topic, something I wish I'd learned before I started flying as a professional pilot. What do you want to learn? Leave me a comment below!

Pilots have a tough job... Being on the road and missing lots of time with friends and family is my least favorite part. That said, I love aviation and I love flying. What else do you want to learn about becoming an airline pilot? Leave me a comment with an idea!

I wonder if the legacy airlines would be more your speed, they pay a lot better for sure. Since there's a pilot shortage, I would walk into the legacy (big) airlines and demand 600k a year if I were you.

Having a Positive Attitude is extremely important in ANY job; and if you enjoy what you are doing you will never have a JOB. Being an introvert usually creates a JOB atmosphere for you and others., and I am sure it is even more noticeable in a cramped 'cockpit'. Your vlogs are always informative and beneficial to those seeking airline positions; and very enjoyable for others (myself) to learn from. Thanks

Stumbled upon this video today. Last month I retired from flying, the last 20 years on jets flying freight. You are absolutely right in everything you say, so much so this video should be mandatory before anyone spends any money training to be a commercial pilot. Being a pilot is not right for everyone but it can be, and was for me, the best job in the world. Yes there will be times when your fed up, when your down-route and missing important things back home concerning children etc. But I can honestly say I never regretted my decision to become a commercial pilot, even at the ripe old age of 39!

Stephen Britton in the words of the late ( thank gawd ) poet , felon , recidivist Rotteneee King ....”.. can’t we all just get along. I feel you. In my sophomore and junior summer vacation I was the assistant handy man in a camp fire GIRLS camp in Northern California. My boss was a college professor who gave me a great life lesson. Be kindest not to administration. No ....be kindest to the important people. The janitor who cleans the head and your room. The maintenance workers that all ignore. Those are the folks to be especially nice to. I learned in my Navy and Marine Corps years ....the haughty , overbearing “ leaders “ frequently had serial failures. Lt Maybeline Madden screeched it best “ HN Paz , you are SO PASSIVE AGRESSIVE !!!!” “ Lieutenant , what’s passive aggressive ? “ I whined “ OMG your doing it again ! “ as she stormed off.

Swayne... that was a well thought out, sobering reality of flying. No flying job is 100% easy, but they are 100% challenging. As you said in the video, if you can learn to adjust, it's a hell of a job. You'll never forget the challenges that make you a pilot among pilots, such as the night, forty years ago now... I was intercepting the ILS for 16Right at Reno in a Cessna 402, after hauling 1,500 pounds of mail from Vegas in thunderstorms and wind shears off the Sierra's, working the boots nonstop throughout, when the tower radios: "Casino six-twenty-five, be advised a Falcon Fanjet landed forty-five minutes ago and reported SEVENTY-KNOT windshears on final." My IAS was anywhere from 80 to 160 knots on final... and I made the best landing of my life that night! Good luck... now just wait until you're in the Left Seat and YOU are responsible for making the decisions!

I have seen other pilot youtubers who merely put on a fake 'positive' persona with flying or they will ramble on for 20+ minutes for a simple topic just to get higher ad revenue. But for your video here, it gets straight onto the point and you are very honest about the drawbacks of airline flying. I appreciate the honesty. Please keep it up and I will look forward to your future videos.

There's already a ton of catering firms that cater flights: LSG skychefs, etc., If they can make a static menu for each day for: Keto, Paleo, Vegan, Vegetarian, etc., there's no need to order "special" orders, but rather Offer the static menu, people can choose what fits them best: 1 hot plate (wrapped in an aluminum box with foil) & 1 fresh plate (cool stuff wrapped in BPA/BPS free plastic) such as the lunch you remember when you were in grade school, this would help pilots remain below 35% body fat and feel better while keeping their hectic schedules.

I’m not an airline pilot and I’ve always taken them for granted when flying. This gives great perspective on how demanding the job is. Keep up the great attitude! Great content!

Thanks for doing this! You've brought some things to my attention that I'll have to ask my friend at SkyWest before I commit on going from railroading to flying.

@@kodachrome9319 1 thing you might consider is do you feel fulfilled and exhilarated after a long day on the tracks. If you love flying youll feel fulfilled at the end of the day even if long and tiring. To me its never been about the pay. Flying doesnt pay much but if you have the bonus of going home really happy at your current job then the choice is of course harder

@@paawan5065 No, I go home mentally exhausted and dreading the phone call to work that can happen in 10 hours. After twelve years of railroading I've grown to love it less and less.

Hey Swayne! I've become a lover of your channel, I must admit. While my career has progressed beyond the regionals, I did spend 10 years piloting CRJs around the US. I must say your points hit so many nails square on the head. I will be advising my son, and a good friend recently changing careers to watch your channel (certainly this particular video). Nice job with the production quality and the subject matter as well. Good Luck!

These are wonderful, hugely useful videos! I’m not on the path toward airline flying-I fly an Aeronca Champ for fun, near the end of a 35-year career as a government lawyer-but I routinely refer young pilots to your videos. Keep up the great flying and fascinating, informative videos. By the way yours is the career I dreamed of, but I’m color blind. My Plan B, however, has been great for me. I still love my job (it involves aviation, but isn’t FAA) because all my career I’ve always employed the same positive attitude that you apply. Cheers!

Spot on, as a newly minted first officer myself I totally agree that these are the unseen challenges associated with the career. Everything is a grind up through initial training and you’re very goal oriented and have a clear goal in sight. After you take your checkride and pass IOE and actually start the line, flying the airplane and your “pilot” duties are the easy part of the day and attention shifts toward these 10 previously unknown, ambiguous factors that now affect your life in a huge way (that no one talks about at the recruiter desk). Absolutely something to consider before selecting your airline/aviation path. Great video!

do you think it is at all possible to minimize the loss of family time while having this job? I've talked to many pilots who commute and say its hard but feasible also, does greater experience help with this? like maybe this is something that you learn to work around while on the job?
