Common Errors in Lateral Band Walks (Avoid Utilizing Heels in Monster Walks)
A common exercise that people perform for glute development is the lateral band walk (also known as monster walks). The problem with how most people perform the monster walk is that they focus on pushing through the heels and knees out. This motion will shorten the glutes and make you feel your glutes for sure! However, shoving your knees out against a band with lateral band walks never teaches the glutes how to express strength through length. Furthermore, emphasizing heel pressure at pushup can have some athletic consequences as it relates to developing less secure movement habits. For all these reasons, and I perform monster walks in this specific fashion as I outline in the video!

Don't build bad habits! Focus on foot pressure and teach glutes to gain strength through length

I've tried this exercise and never figured out how it's better than using the band around your ankles. So why NOT use the band around your ankles and just walk while swinging one led and then the other as wide as you can?

You could....It would make it harder...The lower you put the band down, the longer the lever arm. In fact, you will see a lot of people promote that on KZbin. But as mentioned in the video as well as the comments section, the point of the exercise is to work your muscles and joints in a particular fashion that lengthens the glutes not shortens them. Exercise isn't about always making something harder.. How you perform the exercise and the biomechanics behind them and what it reinforces is also important

@@sportsrehabexperts I'll think that over but I do use a lighter band so it's not that much harder if at all. Is it bad for the knees to put it lower? I use the iron woody 12 inch - #4 medium (green) bands. Mine gluts are not tight, I can bring my knees to my to my chest. My hams might be a little tight but not my gluts.

There's no way to do this movement using a motor pattern that transfers to real life. Stronger glute medius and poor motor coordination. If the band is pulling the trail leg why would I need to push off?
