Hey that was really neat! I'm a pretty avid fisherman, which is saying something here in Montana, but I learned a couple neat tricks! It's nice to hear how things like knots vs. line material work out, and the trick about spinning the rod to hook the line behind the first guide is brilliant!!! I build rods for all my friends and get frustrated when they spin them up (I include hook keepers on every one!) and then toss them into the back of the truck, only to become a giant tangle. The tip about closing the bail on a spinning rod and why was great, too!!! Thanks a bunch!

I had an inshore guide tell me about closing the bale by hand....I figured that was what is was about. I didn't know the wind pushing the baitfish, micro- organisms and such, so thanks for that. My buddies I fish with are always content on putting a line out and never exploring and trying new things. And while I'll agree that a bad day fishing is better than a good day ______, I'd rather learn from each trip and learn new tricks. I'm not a big believer in luck, I believe you can put yourself in a position to capitalize more! Thanks for the clip ..... !

i have been fishing for years and have picked up quite a bit of information along the way... and this all seems pretty simple, still... this is one of the best, ,most straightforward vids ive seen... and reminded me how often i lose focus and make mistake after mistake because i feel most successful with one fly or presentation... fishing "my spots" "my way" when nothing bites and i spent hours in the rain on my only day off... lol i still have fun... but its a nice reminder that "my way" isn't always the best way... also i really appreciated the info in closing the bail on a spinning reel by hand... i don't fish spinning reels often, but my fiance does and her most common tangle is exactly the tangle you described so we'll be trying that suggestion for sure . thank you for that and for all the excellent vids you share.

Best run on fishing off a dock was 5 casts with 3 4-5 lbs walleye. The wind was blowing hard into my face (because if the t-storm that was coming in) I was using a rattle'n'rap and even then I had to cast side arm just to get it out there. I was reeling in fast and there was no missing the strikes.... they hammered it. The last walleye was on the last cast and he wanted to fight and I was debating whether to cut the line or not. That storm cloud was getting way too close and me with a 7 foot graphite rod was making too much of a high point... but I got him in and I got out of there. I was scary, it was hairy... it was a blast!

You can still use the Palomar but you do not want to fasten the not to tight. Having the long tag end to the weight prevents you from having to have to tight of a knot, the hook wont slip.
@MrBilld756 жыл бұрын
This is so true. His analogy about Fluoro being like glass, is very true. NEVER use a Palomar knot on fluorocarbon. I've done it and snapped off too easily. It's just because a palomar clinches down on the mainline and can certainly cut the line. Fluoro cuts itself, yes, absolutely. The improved clinch does not. It wraps around the mainline and that's what you want. It will have loads more strength. Other than that, Palomar on braid or mono. It's the strongest know there is, cause it has the fewest bends in the end. The odd braided line will slip on a Palomar, but as long as it's not a super slick braid it "should" clinche down on itself tight enough it won't slip. Especially one a more "used" line, cause fibers will help increase friction and hold it fine. A rounder or slicker line though, yeah, it can slip, I've had it happen. Test your knots after (safely, so you don't lose your grip and drive a hook into your hand.) Grab it with pliers and pull, see if it let's go.

Great and practical information. Many times fishing---the fish seem to suddenly stop biting all over the lake or pond. Nothing new seems to work. Is it a waste of time to go to lures and locations that you have less comfindence in-perhaps wasting time -or stay with you know works and stay in areas that have always proved productive and wait for the fish to go back feeding. chuck young

Another thing line grabbing does is create an opportunity for slack if the fish jumps suddenly, just like if someone grabs your rod tip when they're trying to help you land one. Absolute no no. That was a great show. Definitely schooled me on a few things. I mainly learned that I suck cause, I have a confidence bait. 😭

Hey, not sure if this has been mentioned, but the knot you are talking about at 9:07 in the video, you call the improved clinch knot, and in the video you overlay a graphic also calling it the improved clinch knot - BUT the pictures showing what knot is being tied looks like some sort of hybrid uni-knot - not sure why, but the diagram seems to show passing the line through the eye of the hook twice (like you might for a Trilene knot). Anyway - the diagram is most certainly not an improved clinch knot - did you intend to show that, or do you really mean a uni-knot as the preferred knot for flurorocarbon?

+php storm When you tie your knot, there's a tail that you clip off as close to the knot as is logical. If you cut the tail/tag too close to the knot, and the knot decides to slip, you'll lose whatever just inhaled your bait.

i noticed that around 28:00 you talk about making sure that you close the bail manually, yet in your general knowledge video you say that either way is fine and it is just personal preference.
@TheBushwooky10 жыл бұрын
You screw up the reel if you close it by reeling. I do it all the time and if you do it enough you wear out a piece inside that is necessary to close it by reeling, to the point you won;t be able to do it anymore and will have no choice but to do it manually.
@bmike300010 жыл бұрын
ive had the same reel for 14 years and have done it that way with no problems.
@MrZexz10 жыл бұрын
thisisthemeaning I agree. Its a personal preference. I do both, but its heavily dependant on the type of lure and what type of fishing im doing. When I just cast regulary i just reel it close. And TheBushwooky, if you take the spool of the reel you can see on most reels its a pretty solid plastic ramp that closes the bail, if you keep it clean it shouldnt wear out.

Polymer knots work with all three line types. Ive used it on fluorocarbon for years without incident. It doesnt "break off all the time..blink,...blink." You simply have to tie it carefully and not allow it to get criss crossed when initially tying the knot. Do the normal through the hook eye and loop and then carefully pull the tag end and watch to keep the line stacked neatly. 16.5 pound hybrid stryper, multiple 5-7 pound bass, etc, etc without a break.

Congrats. Really nice video bro! Its very long video, but all you said is very good. Thanks. A question: bait casting reel, in general, mono or braid line? Thanks.
@davidbeckenbaugh959810 жыл бұрын
I have to agree with his "confidence" lures. I steelhead a lot. Most people are fishing bobber and jig (or worm or bait or whatever). A few places, people scream if you try something else. Last January, I got into a bobber and jig hole that normally has 5 or 6 guys in it. There were only two. They did not have any fish. I was looking for a 50/50 Dick Nite but found a chrome Needlefish instead. So I figured it was close enough. I like bobber and jig fishing, but they did not have anything. I took three casts. The first cast, I caught a dolly varden and released it. The next cast, I missed a tremendous strike. The next cast, I got a nice 8 lb chroma to the bank that still had sea lice on it. I was heading home after only 20 minutes. But I carry every type of lure that I can. I fish according to water conditions, so I change things often. I sure catch my share.

Really appreciate if you do I've been trying to catch one since may and I can't, I've invested a decent amount of money into fishing and I can't seem to catch pike or musky, I almost had a giant musky at the fox river but lost it cause my noob ass had the drag too tight
