Here's an interesting tidbit about the knocking sound from the vacuum pump. My GS 350 F-Sport AWD is a 2015, and the 2013 - 2015 models do NOT have the vacuum pump. BUT, I still hear that same noise. Mine is from the high-pressure fuel pump, which is located in the same area on the valve cover. It's especially noisy at cold start, then it settles, then sometimes out of the blue that odd knocking sound happens. Seeing this and other reports about the vacuum pump noise perplexes me. As an aside, the high-pressure fuel pump is definitely noisy, even could hear it with doors and windows closed, at idle. The pump is mounted to the top of the valve cover nearest the passenger fire wall. I researched this years back and discovered that the HPFP is the same as in certain model years of the LS, and that car had a factory fitted insulation jacket on it. I was able to search for that and purchased one from a Lexus parts dealer. Several days and $50 or so later, I received it and installed it. I was very disappointed how little of the racket was reduced. Oh well, this is probably why Lexus didn't bother to fit one to the GS models.
@EddieGS3503 ай бұрын
Ahh yeah my old 2012 IS 350 also made the same noise on cold start. The 2016+ GS get it worse because you get two different knocking noises. You'll get both the vacuum pump and fuel pump. When I first bought my 2012 IS 350 I was tripping too but after putting 80k miles on the car without any issues at all, I figured if it don't sound like a sewing machine it ain't good.

These are great cars and will last a long time with maintenance. I do worry about the servos on mine, I workaround it by just leaving the temp around 72 which is cool in the summer with AC and feels warm in the winter. That way if they burn out, both climates will be usable still
@EddieGS3502 ай бұрын
ahh man, I wouldn't worry about it too much. Most of the people who do have the issue fall under the TSB which is a simple software fix. It is rare that it gets more involved than that. Just gotta enjoy the car :D
@itsalexc912 ай бұрын
@@EddieGS350my understanding is that unfortunately the TSB has ended for this particular issue :/ you can have the dealer reset the software but if it gets to that point its usually on its way out. But its a relatively minor failure point on an otherwise fantastic car
@EddieGS3502 ай бұрын
@@itsalexc91 Ahh got it. This is complete anecdotal so take it with a small grain of salt. I had the TSB done on my car on 07/07/2021. (just checked via my service records) AC has been working perfectly over 3 years. I saw in my records that they regreased it, not sure if that has anything to do with prolonging the life. but hopefully my experience puts you at ease :)
@InexplicableBill3 ай бұрын
Those air vent/check valves on either side of the trunk not only attenuate cabin pressure when someone closes a door, they also are the exhaust port for when you're highway cruising and the HVAC is providing fresh vs recirculated air. I've never had one of those things fail in any car I've owned, so I'm surprised that the ones in this car somehow allow water to get in. It's unfortunate that Lexus didn't provide one of those specialty drain ports for the low point in that side well. Those specialty drip ports create a venturi effect and siphon off any water falling into them as you drive.
@EddieGS3503 ай бұрын
ohh dude when doing research for the vid. I saw a good amount of people report it on the IS and GS. What happens is they deteriorate or fall off and that lets the water in. I think just checking it before the wet season and you'll be good to go. But thank you for adding your comments. Anyone who watches this vid will pick up your insights. As always thanks for watching Bill!

We have 4 cars a 2017 GS350, 2019 Corolla, 2023 Palisade and 2016 BMW 228i. Our BMW is a 2016 driven by our 19yo son who def enjoys it and it has been perfect engine wise over the last 55kmi. Only two wheel sensors replaced, one set of tires with the rear brakes. It will outrun all our Asian cars and still get 25mpg. The engine bay has tons of space for DIY but the use of plastic everywhere is a scary but so far nothing has melted 😱. The Corolla has had one issue in 5 years, plastic hubcaps fell apart, other than that the engine is an absolute gem! The CVT ruins the driving experience even for an economy car. The Palisade is a minivan in SUV clothing, been a great family hauler. My Lexus is all in one- luxury, performance, economical, and Toyota reliability. I previously drove Mercedes S Class which I loved to drive more than Lexus. Mercedes does a better job on interior and paint quality than Lexus but all the German over engineered mechanical items (air suspension, soft close doors, etc) were a PITA to keep going. I enjoy the Lexus more knowing nothing is broken when I drive it- even with the cold start vacuum pump knock!! Great video!

Ahhh most of these issues are already documented and have a fix for them. A 2018 has probably already done the TSBs. If you lookup Lexus owners from the official Lexus site, you can see if these TSBs have already been performed. I wouldn't hesitate to buy it if the maintenance history is good on that car :) 1.) Vacuum pump. Might already be fixed but even if it isn't it doesn't affect the car. 2.) Water pump. Might've been replaced already but some people go many miles without issues. Just keep an eye on it. 3.) Servo motors. Easy fix w/ TSB. Them completely going out of the TSB isn't too common. 4.) AMP is easily avoidable. 5.) 2018 struts should be solid. 6.) can't help you w/ the haters lol
