I used to absolutely hate the treadmill and would be so off balance and dizzy all the time. Then someone told me to increase the incline to 1-2% and since then I've actually enjoyed doing some treadmill runs. It was really a game changer and made me a more consistent running because I could incorporate running into my gym days.

one more thing. Always connect to the safety cord. No matter how good you think you are accidents can happen and flying off the back of a treadmill at 20kph in to a wall, a weights rack, another person or something else can be dangerous

Oh those inclined hangers on just kill me. Let's face it, most people go to a gym to move their limbs or some weights around. They are not interested in proper technique.
@UnchartedfunLL
@UnchartedfunLL 3 жыл бұрын
Exactly lol holding on to a treadmill also makes the workout feel easier than what it probably should be because when you hold on, you’re only using your legs to move. In reality when you run, you’ve gotta have proper form (opposite arm opposite leg) which means you also need to expend energy on your arms when on that treadmill. Although some people may not care about proper technique when they’re running on the treadmill, I think they probably should if they want their running workout to be efficient, hard working, and tiring.

Chose the Random workout, about level 2. This will bounce you around up to 2.5% incline, so more like a flat run outside. Random works better than Hills as it goes to 0% less often. Not a fan of treadmills, but blizzards make speed work a bit difficult. Thanks, Heather.

Lol. I thought I was the only one thinking that holding on to an inclined treadmill cannot be an effective workout, it happens all the time at the gyms I go to (I am an avid walker and use the treadmill with incline for ‘hill training’, but without holding on for dear life lol). Thanks for pointing out other common mistakes on the treadmill while running (have to admit that I have been making some of those mistakes myself ;))

In an attempt to get my mile time down at the gym one day, I set the treadmill for - let's just say - a very high speed. My confidence had taken a dip of late, so I placed my towel over the display in an attempt to trick myself into running longer. As I was about to step onto the treadmill however, my towel slipped - just as I placed one foot onto the treadmill from the rail; the other foot meanwhile, remained on the other rail. I should really have hit the emergency stop, but was caught in two minds between that and grabbing the towel. I chose the towel. A split second later, I was being dragged back at 19.4 km/hr, and once again I was caught in two minds: this time between holding on to the incline/speed controls, and letting go. Once again, I chose the wrong option. Nowadays, I tend to use towels only for wiping my face during my run, and wiping down the treadmill afterwards.

During one of the rare rainy days in So Cal, I was doing an indoor brick at my gym. After about a half an hour, I reached for my towel to wipe my face (something you don't really get outdoors), I accidentally dropped my towel, and incidentally dropped the towel. Without thinking, I reached down to pick up my towel, and was swept off. Having scrapped my left knee, and embarrassing myself, I then just stepped right back on... to the same exact effect, but to my right knee. I did finish my run, but with a red glaze on my face to match the set of red scrapes, burning from sweat, on my knees.

How do you "calibrate" a treadmill? I always feel I do more cadence on them but the speed is less than when running outside. I mean it feels like I'm running faster on the treadmill but the speed on it does not match what I feel outside, you know what I mean?
@heatherfell_oly
@heatherfell_oly 5 жыл бұрын
I think I understand, the difference being as your foot lands it is then taken back rather than you having to physically move your body weight forwards so in theory it is a little easier. The 1% incline helps it to feel more realistic.

If you are not to hold onto the handles, then what are they there for ? Normally, the cardio sensors are on them for keeping track of heart rate.
@BirdsAndWhales
@BirdsAndWhales 4 жыл бұрын
I think they’re mostly there for if you need to change a setting on the screen it can be a little dangerous to try do that without holding on if you’re going pretty fast
@Jerry-me1fy
@Jerry-me1fy Жыл бұрын
Exactly. Some treadmills have heart monitor sensors on the handles and if you take your hands off it messes up your work out settings you choose. I definitely agree hanging on the treadmill isn't good for helping your running form Strengthening the muscles you need so you don't look so awkward running but your still getting your heart rate up no matter what so that means your getting a work out and that's all that counts. But for sure if you don't need the treadmill to keep track of what your doing then get a heart rate monitor and just put the treadmill on Manuel and run normally I mean it is better for you. My point is yes there is a reason for handls on the machine.

WAIT A MINUTE!!! It's not propper technique to constantly stair at the monitors on the treadmill control panel while I'm walking? How come? I mean, when I am running, my eyes are on Nothing else BUT the readings, and settings while I'm walking. That's the whole point of a treadmill. To get feedback while you are walking on the treadmill. When I have my hands on the propper places, I receive the pulse rate, and I usually keep my eyes on that at all times, or the Miles that I have walked. I walked two miles on the treadmill ad my nephew's gymn last night, and my eyes never left the display reading, unless Joshua was talking to me.

Can someone give me advice please, I used to do Treadmill running for years.. I could practically dance ON the Treadmill whilst running (in other words that much cool and relaxed and confident) After my house move, for 4 months or so I didn't use a Treadmill Then when I eventually got on a Treadmill, I couldn't run without one hand (Right) holding on to the Treadmill No Treadmill accident or anything of that nature, however now at times I tend to loose balance, then I feel.. Ohh lucky you were holding the treadmill I tried to slow down and retrain my brain, but up to now no success, so rather than giving up.. I am continuing my Treadmill running but always use my right hand to hold on to the Treadmill Any advice? TA 👋

I have a history of running hard on the treadmill but I continued to do it because thats when I was my fastest. I ran a one mile benchmark in 5mph running incorrectly. I can do 12mph easy. When I run on the balls of my feet, I get tired faster, I get sore the next day, and I can't run as fast. This may sound like a stupid question, but do you swap between running on your balls and changing to your heels? because I can't consistently run on the balls of my feet. I also do Orange Theory so there are inclines time to time in class.

Really to that I say: just train outdoors. It'll make you more resilient to all sorts of conditions you may encounter. Train mental fortitude as well as physical aspects. In fact I sometimes make a point of going out in the worst conditions of the week (rain, cold, windy...) and I feel it makes me, over the long run, much stronger mentally. And in general I believe tends to be a better exercise. Road running is already a very repetitive stress, but threadmill is even worst. The side benefits of outdoors training are worth more than the (marginal) time gain of threadmill training.

@AmarNathan Yes, I do. The way I see it, it's exactly like driving a car in winter. You bring more stuff, go slower, adapt your technique somewhat... But it still works. I found it helps to just keep running regularly through the fall. Temps go down at a steady rate, so you can just adapt clothes & gear as you go along. I run regularly now, but in previous years I have not always done so. At that time I found it harder to run outside in the winter, because it was much more of a shock compared to what I was used to.
