The framework of this speech is a perfect example of something I was taught long ago about speaking: "Tell them what you're going to tell them, tell them, then tell them what you just told them." It really keeps people's anticipation and engagement, and he did it wonderfully here...including (or especially!) that left hook of "sexy=smart". This was a really great speech, and I remember enjoying it years ago...thanks for the great breakdown!!

Words are powerful, more than we think. He wanted to make this speech because he knows young people are being tricked, about Hollywood, about appearance (fashion, makeup, etc), about jobs, about creating and shaping the world around us. He didn’t want to be too explicit so he spoke in general. He obviously practiced a lot with the speech, and I think he used the most powerful tool in communication..being emotionally attached to the words you say. Feeling them inside, feeling each word, building up an energy so powerful. That energy he created is attached to the words he’s saying, the words goes into the mind of people but the energy goes into their bodies. This tool makes people feel whatever you want, they can even cry if you want them to. English is an explicit language so you have to build it up quickly, Romance languages like mine allow you to build it up more slowly and shape it perfectly. This is the magic of writing, leaving your emotions there so the reader can get those emotions and carry them inside..

It's amazing to see how you can zero in on everything good speakers do and say, and present all these strategies to your own audience so concisely, so clearly, and so engagingly! It's impressive. I had a hard time believing that Ashton Kutcher, being the person I think he is, would have practised this speech so many times, but you convinced me with your reaction that he may well have. It's obvious that he would have had those three points: opportunity, staying sexy, and living your life, planned out beforehand. I am learning a lot. I thought he did quite well. He looked around the room, made eye contact with his audience, the message was not disjointed, just with his body language - this engages the audience. His pitch varied, his intonation was great. I think there were a few distractions with the uh's etc but when you have a group of people yelling intermittently I can see how dodging that would be difficult. You're 100% right: he crushed it. I watched him in a congressional hearing on child trafficking. He has 2 daughters I believe, and he was not acting - he began crying - imaging if his kids were kidnapped and trafficked. Every job you do in this life, make sure you do your best. It doesn't matter what it is. Every person has a job to do, and it all helps a business run and helps others do their jobs. So, someone who collects garbage makes our world cleaner and safer, someone who cleans offices makes it safe and usable for office staff, someone who works in a grocery store helps people find food and get food, etc. Also, doing your job well and being kind to others makes you look good to others and improves you chances of finding other work.
