Transformational leadership is bread n butter of academics and one size fits all for management consultants. However, many villains from history books fit the 5 qualities of transformational leaders. Adolf transformed 1940s Germany, he was a seasoned orator and gave a new (albeit twisted) vision as well and empowered even kids to spy on their parents. A key component missing here is the internal moral compass. I would suggest your audience to read Northouse and authentic leadership in particular
@j.d.wallace83423 жыл бұрын
This is such an important point and I think was not emphasized due to time constraints in the video. Kudos to Dr. Lyon for synthesizing and providing examples for the content in such a short and compelling format. That being said,, there is a moral component here and it is treated more in-depth in the Northouse text that was referenced. At the core of transformational leadership is a concern for followers' needs, which I think that we can safely conclude was not an element in many of the German leaders' profiles. The Northouse text cites Christie, Barling, and Turner, (2011) providing the moniker of pseudo-transformational leaders who are primarily self-serving. Again, astute observations on an important contribution regarding the ethical component.

Omg!! How easily have you described this!? You are a great communicator Alex. I would like to ask though, do you think using the transformational leadership is the best leadership style to effect policy change on mental health? If yes, in short terms, how? Thanks
@alexanderlyon4 жыл бұрын
Hi, Chidiadi. Thank you for the positive feedback. I'm going to pass on answering your question about policy change in mental health. That's a really specific application and I just don't have any data on hand that I could point to make an argument either way. Sorry about that. Mental health just isn't my field. I'm sure there are many other more qualified people to answer that questions.

Hey Alex, thank you for this, it's so I formative!! I am in the process of writing up a presentation and so far I found you to be the most inspiring! However, it saddens me to witness Obama and Mthr. Teresa included here! While they may have portrayed excellent Leadership skills, they left millions of followers completely devastated: Obama refused to drink the poisoned local tap water up in Flint, while at the very same time, he encouraging the towns resistance that it was safe. Water that is/has been killing its residence for some time now! And how Mother Teresa stole millions to profit the Vatican!! It would seem, far too many of those "Great Transactional Leaders" that keep popping up, (such as Gates) in my research are ALL quite dangerous to society!! I strongly believe it takes a very special kind of person to be a Transformational Leader. I've no doubt there are many great, honest leaders whose names would be better suited in yours and other presentations! Keep up the great work..
@WinterTSnow5 ай бұрын
Like the video a lot, but Mother Theresa has stated her only goal was to get more people to join the church and not actuallyl heal them. There are dozens and dozens of accounts of her "hospitals" being in terrible conditions and the patients being treated poorly. She would intentally bring people who were suffering to their lowest so they would find God. I don't think you need to remove it from the video because most people have no idea about how much of a monster she actually was but I would refrain from using her in the future. Up to you tho
