Apart from ceremonial elements from the military, ONLY those who actually served in war should be marching. That's what the ANZAC parade was meant to be about. I remember a time when you knew that everyone marching, or being driven, had actually served in war. Applauding actually meant something. Now, it's half way to being Moomba.
@sqnhunter5 жыл бұрын
And your Australian? You sure got ANZAC day all wrong! Anzac Day is a national day of remembrance in Australia and New Zealand that broadly commemorates all Australians and New Zealanders "who served and died in all wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations" and "the contribution and suffering of all those who have served". As time goes by, the battle numbers dwindle, and the people step out and take their place to show respect, commemorate and remember to show the Anzac spirit is still alive. It is what Australia is about. I marched my time in the parades, Now live overseas. But still feel it is good people remember.
@russellparratt98595 жыл бұрын
@@sqnhunter I remember going to the ANZAC day march sometime in the 1960's, and I believe there may have been 1 or 2 Boer War veterans there, being driven, of course. There were certainly a few WW1 veterans, and a very strong contingent of WW2 veterans. The whole point is, people will die, and it becomes poignant as the numbers marching become less. That is reality. Boosting the numbers with descendants wearing medals is an entirely meaningless exercise. When does it stop? Why not have hundreds of great grandchildren marching wearing medals? They did NOTHING to deserve it. That sounds like primary schools where competition is frowned upon, and everyone gets a medal. The ONLY people marching should be those who served. The ceremonial service is for those who died. There will be more wars to keep the numbers up, don't worry. WW2. The Korean war. Vietnam. East Timor. The Middle East....still going. You are the one who misses the point about what the ANZAC day march SHOULD be about. Without in any way wishing to show any disrespect to actual veterans who march, the way it is now run looks like a farce compared to how it used to be run. School bands? People who have never experienced war, wearing medals? People, in the march, ambling along as if they're going to a family picnic?
@russellparratt98595 жыл бұрын
@@daviddou1408 For the sake of brevity, I did not mention military bands, an obvious inclusion, though I did mention them, and other ceremonial positions, in my original post. Nor would I exclude members of forces other then Anzacs. I never suggested that, my point being about honouring those who served. If you don't make that distinction, where does it end? You may as well have half of Melbourne marching along too, because I'm sure everyone has had some member of the family in a war somewhere, at some time. That's the logical conclusion of your argument. By the way, ANZAC stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, just in case you didn't know. It's in the Macquarie dictionary. And as for people wearing the medals that they never earned themselves, it sounds like fraud to me. It has no meaning. Do people want to be applauded for wearing the medals that their fathers or grandfathers earned?
@russellparratt98595 жыл бұрын
@@daviddou1408 Reading over my comments again, the grammar and explanation is precise. That you chose to labour over certain points of semantics is due to your failure to read it properly. Also, the terms Anzac and ANZAC have different meanings, but can both be used in the context of Anzac/ANZAC Day. Your focus on that issue was pathetic. I knew precisely what I meant. Your response deserved a condescending reply. I have not been to war, but 4 members of my family fought in 3 different wars. So which group should I be marching with?
@russellparratt98595 жыл бұрын
@@daviddou1408 If you go to the Victorian RSL website, www.rslvic.com.au you will see the term ANZAC Day. You will see it spelt out, clearly. Stop labouring on points that you are losing.

I'm a former Adelaidean now living in Melbourne. I marched in the relative's section of the Adelaide Anzac Day march on 2 occasions & it was made very clear to all of the descendants participating that the march was not a parade it was a funeral procession for the fallen, and we were expected to conduct ourselves in a manner befitting such an occasion (relatives and descendants also march at the back in our own separate groups). From what I've seen in Melbourne though the Anzac Day march does seem to be treated more like a parade, which admittedly I do find somewhat jarring. So is the march in Melbourne considered a parade to honour those who have served or are serving, or is it considered to be a funeral procession for the fallen as it is in Adelaide? Genuinely curious to know.
