I think the movie would've been much better without the reveal that she's a robot in the trailers. I think the filmmakers didn't intend on audiences knowing that beforehand because they subtly hint at it throughout the first 30 mins and then build it up as a giant reveal/twist going into the second act. I really wish I got to experience the excitement that I could tell other people in my theatre had when it was revealed that she's a robot.

Before seeing the movie I did hear someone mention “there’s gonna be a robot in the movie” but thankfully never heard any real plot details beyond that. I only saw the teaser which was perfect and it’s kind of a shame later trailers revealed more. But either way, I had a total blast with this one! I couldn’t believe it was a January movie. Sophie Thatcher is nothing short of magical in this! I hope people go out to see it even if the main hook is spoiled for them because it’s still a really fun movie all around

I have to praise the way the main metaphor for toxic relationships was dealt with in this movie. The majority of movies nowadays that use metaphors end up embracing one of two pitfalls: 1. The entire point of the movie is to convey a message, so the thing the metaphor is for becomes much more important than the actual story of the film, making it feel more like a sermon than an artistic experience 2. There is a scene/sequence in the movie that is designed to have metaphoric meaning, which leads to it feeling like we're taking a break from the movie to do that, then resuming the story after that's over and done with The way Companion does it, for me at least, found the perfect middle-ground of it being there throughout the film as an important motif, but never taking the spotlight away from the actual story of the movie. It's there, it's easy to spot if you're looking for it, you can draw parallels and think about how it relates to real-life relationships and in what ways they can become toxic and harmful, but you can also enjoy the surface level of the shenanigans that are taking place and the plot of the film without feeling like you're constantly being reminded of the metaphor

Jumping Jimminy Crickets man, you've articulated my exact thoughts on this film to a tee better than I could. This is exactly how I (pleasantly) felt watching the film. I felt like I could, as you said, consciously draw the parallels OR kick back and enjoy the ride, and happily switch between perspectives at my leisure. Which just made the film feel overall "nice," for lack of a better word to summarize it. Ie, the film had good messaging, it did it's messaging well, but it was also just plain old good wntertainment, with clever dialogue, comedic timing, and great performances. 👍
@raycar9827
@raycar9827 4 күн бұрын
@commandershepard9920 in all seriousness I've noticed this trend in recent years. The trend of the controlled woman. Cuckoo, Don't worry darling, Heretic, Strange Darling. Seeing as how media reflects the society in which it was created what are your thoughts on this trend?
@commandershepard9920
@commandershepard9920 4 күн бұрын
@@raycar9827 I feel like these films are criticizing the controlling ways in which women are often treated, but at the same time also capitalizing on this criticism (ie, it's a "trend" as you point out). Maybe that's just me being cynical, and maybe the box offices of that films on that list aren't even that great (unsure, haven't looked them up). I've not much to add honestly, other than that, opportunism or not, I'm personally glad this trend exists at all. Not to get too political, but I personally believe that sexism might be on the rise ("redpill" culture), and that Horror is actually a very fitting genre with which to explore this kind of controlling attitude towards women - because it is horrific. Jordan Peele also uses Horror to explore somewhat similar themes of control of an obviously different group of people (ie, "Getout"), but a parallel is broadly How Those With Privilege Treat Those Without Privilege. Horror just seems like a good fit. But like the OP said, none of this matters if you can't make a good movie. Thankfully sometimes film makers apparently can.
@raycar9827
@raycar9827 3 күн бұрын
@commandershepard9920 nice. The part about capitalizing on this trend is something I've thought about. And I feel that the new form of revolution is to weaponize the system against itself. Using capitalism to fight capitalism. As far as horror being a fitting genre I agree. But I feel pure science fiction is just as good. A good example would be The Immaculate Room. A good sci-fi about being locked aways during COVID.

This is a movie filled with intrigue, especially early on as we find out more and more. It's also surprisingly funny, with several moments when the entire theater was laughing. I was enjoying it for the most part, but a few things held it back for me. The third act lingers and doesn't fully seem to know where to go.

I love how the movie also has a lot of questions and critique about how we treat our electronics but obviously how we treat women. How Iris could very easily NOT have been a robot and Jack's character could and would have potentially treated her in much the same way - as an inanimate object to be controlled.

I've got a question for the people who saw it. It's just a detail but I want to know what you think Spoiler: When lukas gage sees the meeting with jack quaid for the first time ( the love at first sight seen), before he turns around we see in the background that the green dragon is smaller than him in height. Personally I have 3 possible explainations but which one do you think it is: 1. editing mistake, to avoid reshooting they used the former scene and forgot about the height difference (least likely for me) 2. It's a remenance of his feelings for Eli because the rebooting is not complete (I thought it was least likely at first but considering his death, I think it's still possible) 3. That's just how the height was programmed in the meet cute in his systeme ( seeing how the meet cute didn't happen and his just a program, it's possible but once again Why would he be this height since Eli is shorter than average BUT it is still possible since he is the average height for a woman 5'3)

Saw the movie yesterday. Thought it was alright? Definitely a creative story and well-acted. But just didn't hit as hard as their last movie (Barbarian). I think the worst thing they did is let slip she's a robot in marketing materials. That may have helped in making it a more impactful twist. It also felt like the movie was running out of steam halfway through as if they knew the ending they wanted but were struggling to fill the time to actually get there. I mean she gets caught and escapes 5+ times and nearly 3 times very close together at the end of movie and it had me wondering "just how many times can she keep getting caught with a huge exposition-filled monologue to fill the screentime??". Definitely looking forward to their next film, but this one just didn't land for me.

Movie trailers often reveal too much, which is frustrating. While it's true that spoilers circulate online, especially with clips surfacing on platforms like TikTok, these leaks hurt the film's release. The studio's strategy of revealing key plot points in the trailer may be a way to combat this, attempting to control the narrative. Despite the spoilers, I thoroughly enjoyed the film and it was one of my most entertaining movie experiences of 2025. Sophie Thatcher's performance was particularly impressive, and I believe she has a promising career ahead of her.

Furiosa & Smile 2 was a real kickass movies for me from last year. Hoping this one does the same but I'm still skeptical on it and I don't trust hyped movies in general and reviewers these days can't be trusted even more too. Though I still check them out to see what's going on. I will wait for it's VOD release or when it's on streaming. Thanks.

Just got back from the theater! The third act is full of homages to Terminator 2, INCLUDING the gimmick of using the female lead actress's identical twin sister in a cameo. (Linda Hamilton and Sophie Thatcher are both identical twin sisters.)

I just saw Companion last night and it was a surprisingly great viewing. With a combination of many ingredients such as humor, thrills, horror,romance, and drama is was a tasty smorgasbord at the movies.. A perfect blend of a visual and satisfying cinematic smoothie. I know it is early in 2025 but my favorite film of the year so far!

I wish I hadn’t seen the trailer. The teaser didn’t give away anything but the trailer certainly did

Me too. I watched the trailer cuz I was excited to see the movie, but I should’ve just scrolled past it. Hollywood really needs to stop it with these trailers that reveal everything about the movieand just stick with releasing vague teaser trailers that just give you the vibe of the movie. At this point I’m just gonna try to avoid trailers. Unfortunately you can’t really avoid the ones they show in the theater before the movie starts.

I just don’t get the hype with this movie, Sophie’s performance was great she’s a star but almost every other character fell flat and their performances were very weak imo but everyone’s different I just don’t get the hype.

I went in blind as well. I saw it Monday. This is really good, but i found a few contrivances a bit distracting. It was stated at some point that her strength/ aggressiveness could be altered. Why didn't she do that when she was trying to get out of the car? It shouldn't hurt anyone's viewing experience, though.😊

!!!!*Spoilers*!!!! The agressiveeness seems to only be modified with joshes usb mod thing so it probably the same for the robots’ strength. Iris never got a hold of the mod, so she could not change those herself.

I was in the same boat when I saw it (thanks Regal's Mystery Movie Monday) and going in blind made the movie super fun. Having looked up the trailer after the fact, I'm really happy I didn't see it because the beginning twist of her being a robot is crazy cool. I hope lots of people get to experience it the same way.

I saw this great fun movie going in totally blind. I never watch trailers especially genre movies, as any always give away spoilers. When the the first reveal happened I was totally blown away. After that,the serpentine plot the film got even wilder. After seeing Presence last week,which i thought was generic at best, this was a breath of fresh air. I am seeing it again next week as I enjoyed this film so much.

My girlfriend got me to watch this movie cause she just watched anything with famous people she knows, so I went in knowing absolutely nothing about it and was so confused when the reveal happened. One of the main reasons why I barely watch any trailers before a movie and just see where they take me.

This movie was surprisingly triggering for me, found myself reliving things, even lines and terrible violence from a past relationship which I did not expect to see here. But it was my God it was perfect for me to watch and tell myself that I took the right decision at the end

the newer trailer shows way more than the previous one that i was always seeing during previews, thankfully didnt see the new one till after i saw the movie, id say not knowing those details made it a much better experience than if i would have known

I was glad the trailer didn't give it away. This film was good. It spoke so much to the state of how some of these incel/"revenge of the nerds" types are operating or would like to have their way.

Hey Chris, would you please try to watch (and hopefully review) Best Picture nominee I'm Still Here? I know it released in the US, don't believe it's near you, but if it ever gets close, please try it. I'm Brazilian, it's a terrific film, and more visibility to our Art would be greatly appreciated. Best wishes, nice Neon sponsorship.

Absolutely hated this movie, I'm shocked to see so much praise for it. The script was awful, the acting was awful (other than Sophie Thatcher, she was pretty good) and the cringey millennial humor was unbearable at times.
