I really don’t understand all the hate on the outback and the cvt. Im averaging 35 mpg combined in an awd vehicle that has about more cargo room than anything. I really dont give a shit if the car doesn’t accelerate as fast as a corvette. It can easily match any freeway speed up an onramp. What more do you need?

Floyd Matson - I’m honestly one for one as far as CVT transmissions. I had a 2005 Mercury Montego with one, hated it. Although in all fairness it weighed in at 4,000 lbs (with me in it) and couldn’t get out of its own way. Honda, on the other hand, completely restored my faith in CVTs. Our 2015 Accord is awesome and for a 4 cylinder is incredibly peppy. I agree with you, the Outback is not a Corvette, it’s designed for people who want good fuel mileage, practicality, and an AWD system that is simply amazing. Although I don’t currently own a Subaru I hope to buy either the new Forester or Outback in the near future. I feel for the money it is one of the best values on the road today.

Its no surprise, its the CVT. They are cheap, they are fuel economic, but they are soulless, slow, and if they aren't stepped into a fake automatic, are really annoying at full throttle due to harmonics from constant RPM.

Alltrak all the way! The Outback is massively bloated now. For a Subaru I’d rather have the Crosstrek, but I’d still buy the VW. I LOVE the green paint with brown leather it’s so beautiful! I’d buy the DSG for sure. That 1.8T engine is a gem and DSG makes it even better. That said, I might choose the Golf Sportwagen over the tall Alltrak.

DSG's have had problems in there own right. They aren't known to be the most "reliable" transmissions either. And honestly i feel Subaru's 3.6R with the CVT is one of THE BEST out there especially for a CVT. It's about as close as your going to get to a true automatic. FAR and AWAY better then what Nissan and Honda put out.

Blake Swan... My guess is neither you or Roman have ever driven an old Buick with a Dynaflow trans or a 1960 Chev. Impala with a Turbo Glide trans.Both were shiftless transmissions kind of like a CVT gas mileage back then was lousy for each. I owned both and they were real dogs compared to the new effortless smooth CVTs. Would I want one if living in the mountains out west. NO! But it sure works great in the twisty hilly Ozarks, and would even be better in flat land states. Just my take after owning many cars with both auto and stick.

Define better? I wanted something with great cargo space, good roof rack system, decent gas mileage, good AWD system for bad winters and for getting through some trails in backwoods campsites, something that is potentially going to last me over 200K miles, and great safety ratings as this is a family car. Subaru Outback seemed to check all the boxes for me. So, I guess I'm a dumbass- even though I have family that has worked in the auto industry for 20 to 30+ years that highly recommended Subaru.

Nice cars. One of my brothers shops is an Audi shop - I could've had one in a heartbeat. But, Q5 would've been out - not nearly enough cargo space. Q7 would've been nice - a little less cargo space, but not much. It also has about 8 less mpg combined compared to my Outback. So, let's say I'm willing to overlook that and get a 2015 Audi Q7 Premium. I'm looking at 28K for a car with probably about 45K miles on it. I also gotta put an aftermarket warranty on it. So, conservatively $30,000 for a car with 45K on it and a Warranty that will cover up to 100K. My financing rate is going to be a bit higher too. My 2018 Outback had 5 miles on it (test drive). It's covered with a Subaru warranty I extended to 7years, 100K miles - bumper to bumper. It has a lifetime power train warranty through the dealer - and all maintenance. It's a premium trim with all other features I wanted (and then some). I paid $32,000. This is a car that in 7 years I will be handing to my son (who will be 16 at that time). It's not a speed demon - it doesn't need to be. I have motorcycles for that. I want a camping car. A family car. I don't see how your recommendation is "infinitely better". Thanks for the suggestion though.

It sounds like we went through a very similar analysis when I was looking to replace my car. I ended up going with the Alltrack but obviously looked hard at Subarus. I loved the driving dynamics of the VW and lower roof height. I gave up a bit of cargo space but got into the Alltrack for just over $21k which allowed me to get winter wheels and tires and a rocket box right away which I liked. I spend my miles on Idaho and Montana highways and fire roads, where do you drive? Enjoy your new car and don't let the headcases get to you.
@JohnSheehan72
@JohnSheehan72 6 жыл бұрын
They don't - there is no such thing as a car (or truck) that covers all the bases. That's what research is for. I looked at the Alltrack also - and the Honda CR-V. Alltrack didn't give me any more standard cargo room then my 2013 Nissan Rogue (now my wife's vehicle). And the Outback gives me better towing capability then either. Like I said, Outback just checked all the boxes for what I was looking for. I live in Upstate NY (Albany area) - so I am frequently up in the Adirondack mountains and surrounding areas. I was worried about a naturally aspirated engine, but not really an issue until you get over 7 or 8,000 feet - and NY's highest point is under that. Heck, the highest point in the whole Northeastern US is around 6000 feet. So far I love the Outback - there were certain features I wanted (all weather package, integrated roof rack system) - but the trim and options I ended up with are all added bonuses. Adaptive Cruise control is probably my favorite of the bunch as I'm on the thruway system a lot, and setting and forgetting cruise control has been great. I can now get all my camping gear in one trip - without a cargo container for the roof. Once I get that I can do all the camping gear and the kids if my wife wants to stay home. Good stuff.

Also, Subaru’s cheap brakes will go out by 50k miles, VW brakes go over 100k before you even need to think about replacing pads and rotors. My Tiguan at 63k miles still had half brake pad life when I got it inspected, and my buddies Touareg went 130k before he replaced pads and rotors. I predict that cvt transmissions will fade away as more manufacturers move to the 8 or 9 speed automatics that provide the same fuel efficiency as the cvt without the horrible acceleration lag. The Subaru cvt isn’t even the worse on the market. The Nissan cvt they put in the Altima is horrible for around town use.

Yes, the CVT kind sucks, but they put it to make it more fuel eficient. I own a 2010 Outback, just hit 100k miles, took it to the dealership for a full 129 point inspection. THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH IT. And you know, that if there's something wrong they will tell you about so you can get it fixed 'cause every time you go to the dealership they comeback with a laundry list of crap you have to fix. The WV will be smoking white smoke from all the oil sipping in worn out pistons. Stay away from VW and get on a Subaru, unless you wanna be changing cars every 3 years. I changed the water pump and belt, put new 4 sparks, it runs great and safe. I plan on driving mine until it falls apart and this is my second one, first one 96 Legacy, sold it with 254,000 miles and didn't burn a drop of oil.

i love the Subaru brand, but any car & especially an SUV with a CVT is an absolute no buy for me. I was stupid enough to buy a CVT car once, it'll never happen again. CVT makes the Subaru a complete loser in any contest. THE CVT is a million times worse in stop & go traffic too due to no engine braking. Roman's rating is spot on!
@JonDZ_Adventuring
@JonDZ_Adventuring 6 жыл бұрын
Maui Chris ha! Roman’s rating is purposely and obviously jaded! He says it at the end, that any car company that won’t provide him cars should gets an automatic “drive it off a cliff”. I use to drive a 2010 WRX. For that year, they only came in a Manual. A traditional auto would not put the power down, it wasn’t worthy. The Lineartronic CVT’s put more power down compared to the old 4EAT and 5EAT automatics, and they were worthy enough to put in the 2015 WRX, doing 0-60 in 5.5 seconds. It’s no “direct” transmission like a stick or dual clutch, but that’s alright. Did you see what happened to the new Hyundai Kona with a Dual Clutch while trying gold mine hill? It overheated because it has a direct transmission with no torque converter. So unless you like offroading in a stick shift, a CVT is an awesome option!!! Like it or not!!!

It’s just like this.... not even a remote contest. The Honda blasts the V6 by 3-6 car lengths. The cars are even similar in weight. These are not. My 2.0 Turbo CVT equipped Forester was faster 0-60 faster than its automatic competitors back in 2014 in its class. (not the new offerings from AMG, Volvo, Alfa Romeo, and Acura). It has!! So glad I bought a 2015. Another interesting fact: 2014-2016 FXT's do 0-60 in 6.2 seconds, but because of demand, they implemented fake shifting in the 2017-2018 models, making it slower with a 6.8 second 0-60. Unfortunately, it's sad that Subaru listens to ignorant consumers that freak out about how a CVT operates (holds itself in the power band). They should have listened to the guy at "Engineering Explained" who holds CVT's in high regard. I'm a big fan of TFL, but they're not perfect. they're obsessed with 1.) Loud Engine Noise [seriously, the future is EV, engine noise is annoying, respect cars that are quite and fast] and 2.) hating on CVT's that outperform Automatic transmissions (don't compare a stick to a CVT, compare apples to apples Auto Vs. CVT). It's true, early CVT's are terrible. Nissan's CVT's from gen 1 to 3 are really bad (they're on gen 5 now). But Subaru's Lineartronic line of CVT's (there's only 2 versions, the TR580 and TR690) are really solid. Not all CVT's are created equal!

The Japanese cars are kind of “all purpose appliance” forgiving on maintenance, repairs etc but are less advanced in terms of driving dynamics and somehow boring to be on the drivers seat. I don’t mind paying more for that extra fun to drive.

First things first, if you think drag racing family/utility cars is the best way to make a purchase decison, you should move along and go ahead and buy the sports car. I really don't get this channel's hate against Subaru Outback, considering you bought one! That being said, if you insist on drag racing them, lets note a few things. 1. Subaru Outback 3.6R curb weight is 3,900 lbs. Altrack is 3,300 lbs. 2. A manual gearbox will always have the upper hand in drag racing. It would be interesting to see these two cars if both were automatic. 3. I have a 2016 Outback 3.6R. I went out this morning to try a from stop acceleration test. I didn't get the "lag" in RPMs that was claimed in this test. I started from a stop with car in drive, and not manual drive. I put the pedal into the firewall, my RPMS quickly rose smoothly and quickly, with no "lag". I had no way to film this though. It has been mentioned before, was this a brand new 3.6R? How many miles were on the car? There seems to be built in protection during the "break in period" that seems to limit power. All that being said, as a 3.6R owner I am neither a fan boi or a hater. I understand I drive a family car, and CVT isn't the best for performance. But if I wanted performance I would have bought the STI. The 3.6R is really good at it's intended use. It gets my family up to the ski resorts, handles the wet winters here in Western Oregon, takes us on rough dirt roads for camping and is bulletproof reliable. I find it sporter to drive than a regular family car and god forbid a minivan.

The weight is the reason that Subaru's won't sell in the Netherlands, roadtax depends on weight. Also their mpg-rates aren't that good, so the CO2-tax is high. All and all, very expensive to drive and to own in the Netherlands. Roadtax VW €900/year - Subaru €1200/year

We were given a 17 Subaru Outback rental from heuberger Subaru in Colorado Springs and took it off roading thru rocks had the tires coming off the ground and that outback handled that without a problem it’s not gold mine hill but it is pretty hard for most cars to get up. It’s sad that Subaru won’t give you another outback to test up gold mine hill or something. Maybe you could work with one of the dealer ships if they do that which they probably don’t

I own a VW GTI. Great packaging, great driving dynamics, but I won't be buying another VW. Issues I've had do not inspire confidence. I am shopping for the next ride now, Subaru and Toyota are top of the list. I want a car that works every time everywhere I want to go without worrying about it or feeling like I need to be delicate with it. In city traffic, power and handling don't count for much, dealing with crappy roads and good turning circle is more important. Alltrack is more of a competitor to the Crosstrek anyway.

Fuuuhhh... I was looking at a truck, now this VW is in the running. Only thing killing the VW is NO towing ability. We're looking at getting some quads and PWCs, so not much weight, but the Alltrack can tow NOTHING. The fun factor is MUCH MUCH better with the Alltrack. Sure, you have a good time offroading and pulling heavy stuff in a truck, but the daily commute is... BLEH. The VW offers fun every day. Can't. Decide. Help me TFL.
@Zenrei940

The Alltrack can tow, the manufacturer doesn't let the north american variant listed with towing capacity. You can watch TFL on their previous episode in Europe driving a Sportwagen and they mentioned a tow rating on the wagens manual. Another reference for towing is on this link - volkswagenownersclub.com/vw/showthread.php/111650-2017-Alltrack-Towing-Capability Maybe american drivers are just notorious on towing above the limit that Volkswagen void towing on their vehicles? Shawn Childs Anecdotal evidence. Comprehensive studies will tell you differently. I could tell you my and my family's experiences with VW versus Subaru but that's also just anecdotal. But I think in general cars are just more reliable than they used to be and the studies exaggerate differences. That said, for long term ownership, I know which one I wouldn't trust. If you're only leasing or keeping it a few years under warranty, it doesn't make a lot of difference, although you might spend more time at the dealership with one....

5 years? That's a long time to hold a grudge. Frankly, I don't think the average car buyer -- Colorado or not -- is that interested in your grudge. Clearly you upset the people at Subaru with the way you treated their test vehicle and, since then, you've pretty much convinced them that you're not serious about objectivity. Why would they give you a car again? This video is a case in point. You set the parameters for a 'Colorado car', like 'ground clearance, all-wheel drive, big, snow, has to handle gravel ...', and then the main part of your 'assessment' is a drag race! Car companies are capable of mind blowing spin about their products but I doubt if Subaru or VW make outlandish claims about these particular vehicles in terms of drag racing. In fact, Subaru in particular, would be much more mindful of safety and 'discouraging' the driver from stupid, adolescent drag racing. Again, and you expect them to take you seriously? Finally, it might be reasonable of you to be upset with Subaru but surely this little tiff pales into insignificance compared to how VW treated its customers with regard to diesel engines? This was unconscionable behaviour even by low car maker standards. As for CVT, I don't know what the fuss is about. I have just bought a Subaru Liberty (Legacy in your country) sedan and the CVT is fine for normal driving ... in fact I think it's more than fine.

When I watched that video years ago with the Subaru on Gold Mine Hill, I said to myself, "Well, good chance they might not get another Subaru test vehicle for a while!" Guess I was right. I do respect TFL for really testing the cars and not worrying about repercussions from the manufacturers. That was rough though. If I remember, that Subaru they took up the hill had all season tires and that portion of the hill was really rough. Most people with a brain would not take their Outback up there unless it was upgraded. It's not a rock crawler. It made for an entertaining video though. Interesting I leased a 2008 Passat Lux with the 2.0T. What a blast car. Loved it. I have no doubt the Alltrack is more fun. The VW now has an awesome warranty too. However, I would probably go for the Outback 3.6R over the Alltrack because I need that extra 10 cu ft of cargo and the back seat of the Alltrack is kind of tight. I live at sea level and won't be driving to Colorado, maybe NC or New England at the highest elevation so the H6 should be fine.

tried xc 60, parado, kluger, cx-9, audi q5, audi a4 all road and ended up with a Subaru Outback 3.6- the most comfortable out of all of them; the CVT is livable; great vehicle and it was the most comfortable which needs to be placed in the context of a family member having a bad back. A friend did a similar comparison but across more soft roaders and independently also chose the Outback (4 cylinder) for the a similar reason. Work colleague has also chosen an outback. In the 3.6 Im managing 26 mpg and it runs on regular which I am more than happy with (particularly after my wrangler unlimited which hit 18.5 mpg). Roman's lessons is to never go first model year of any vehicle. The main thing I would say you dont get an Outback for spirited driving; it makes you want to relax and take it easy, never felt this effect before driving sedans, luxury cars (including Gensis, E class and 5 series) suvs except for when I drove an air sprung 60s Merc (which felt like it was crushing the road beneath it).

First of all the Alltrack is FAR lighter then the Outback. Which is one of the MAIN reasons why it is faster. Secondly the guy must not have been driving this Outback right. Because my 3.6r can get from 0-60mph in about 7 seconds. Considering the Outback is nearly 4000lbs that's pretty damn good for a vehicle of it's size and weight. The CVT which yes i'm NOT a fan of is one of THE BEST if not THE BEST made. In terms of mimicking a true automatic. One can't say the same for Nissan for example which makes THE WORST CVT engines out there. Lastly the Outback is proven with it's AWD capability and i'm quite sure it can go places the Alltrack can't handle. Just based on it's higher ground clearance alone. Plus it's larger cargo hold for carrying items when traveling etc...Not to mention it's higher quality refinement inside and out over the VW. So sorry folks Subaru takes the cake as far as i'm concerned.

Subaru needs to lower the gears on the CVT for high altitude. At low altitude it works fine, but the gearing is set too high for Colorado high elevations. The X-Mode helps a little, but it would be nice if that lowered the gears more. You will also lose power if then engine is not warmed up.
@backroadreviews7353

The results of the drag race was definitely attributed to the fact that they are nearly a mile above sea level. If you live at at "altitude" it is all the more reason to get a car with forced induction. See my links below. Car and Driver had different results at sea level. Also keep in mind the Outback is a bigger heavier vehicle that will carry more stuff. I do hate seeing Subaru switch to CVT transmissions and because of this I would only buy the models that still offer a manual. I have owned 4 Subarus over the last 12 years, 2 Foresters and 2 STi's. I must say I had no issues with any of them. Reliability ratings back up my experience. This being said I currently do not own a Subaru primarily because of the CVT and the fact the American cars have left them behind in the performance category. Subaru did you forget what made you popular? Remember back in the day when a Forester XT would outrun a 300Z and the STi would obliterate Mustang GTs. Your 2 liter turbo should be offered in every vehicle you sell with a manual transmission as an option. I know someone from their corporate office just read my last paragraph and wants to reply quoting their sales numbers which have been stellar. :-) www.caranddriver.com/volkswagen/golf-alltrack www.caranddriver.com/subaru/outback

The 6-speed is making use of all the 170HP whereas the CVT is throwing away a huge chunk of that 250HP. Beats the whole point of having more HP. I have to agree with Roman, BURN IT.

Just curious - have you turned off the intelligent mode on that nice c# shifter? It does limit HP intentionally.

What I've found out in my wife's Impreza with CVT, if you want a "better" acceleration, you shouldn't build up rev too much. Hold the rpm to like 2k or so and after you let the brake off, gradually floor the throttle. The Rev will go up to around 5000 and stays there. Of course Impreza has a tiny 2 L engine and not much of a juice, but for that car it was a quicker acceleration than flooring both peddles and letting the brake go.

the turbo when driven to enjoy the power, probably burns as much if not more than the 3.6L subi, so if you like to drive a bit hard, the subi with 3.6 is just fine, even if more gas.. if you want power, then buy the one you like overall with the power you want

In the end subaru won. The alltrac went the way of the dinosaur, and the outback is still not only selling well but better still wildly popular.

I owned 3 Subaru's but when they fired the designer of the last good Subaru the Legacy of 2005-2009 they were all crap since then. It was the only one which had an actual good interior. The Tribeca wasn't given the right love or it could have done well. They shouldn't have got rid of him, he did an outstanding job with the Legacy. Oh well, I've moved on. Probably will never go back.
