There's A dark underbelly to the seemingly cute music box industry. Turns out the Music Box business is far more cut-throat than what it seemed. Some players in the industry have even retorted to name calling. This is not the world I want my kids to grow up in. I have decided to do something about it. Things are going to change around here. I think we are a bit primed to like the sound of Speldosa, as subs to this channel 😅 I also straight away liked number 3 in the blind test the best, but again I feel like it's partly because of being used to that sound. Aside from that, I think it has some fullness and warmth to it that I experienced a lack of in the other plug ins...

I like Speldosa and the three most expensive ones. The Speldosa sounds most sweet, but the three expensive ones sounds more true to how a musicbox sounds for real. That's at least judging from this video and for making music with a real musicbox :). And you're spot on with the "there's no bad sounds" idea, there's just sounds that might fit or might not fit in a certain situation :)

I'm not an audio engineer but it seems like if you wanted a low-fi gritty scratchy sound you would want to be able to add that yourself on top of a clean initial noise in order to give yourself the most possible options
@blahorgaslisk7763
@blahorgaslisk7763 Жыл бұрын
The thing with the more expensive options is that they are not low-fi. They are emulating the sound of a real life music box. You can hear the odd resonances and everything. This can be pretty advanced depending on how they achieved the effects, but there certainly is a lot of work making this sound as good as it does. The Wintergatan plugin has a very enjoyable sound. It stimulates your brain in a way that no real world instrument can achieve as it doesn't try to sound like a real world instrument. This can be good or bad. Some will claim it is cheating as "real music is played on real instruments". But personally I think it's "just" another instrument. Use it or don't. No one can force you to like a sound or instrument. Well the harmonics in this particular plugin some what cheats with that and tickles the pleasure center in my brain in ways I can't ignore. Thing is I *know* it is manipulating me with the harmonics, and that is a bit irritating. But yet I can't dislike the sound. No that's wrong, I love the sound, and that annoys me just slightly...
@Hoovaloov
@Hoovaloov Жыл бұрын
@@blahorgaslisk7763 This is fascinating, I would love for you to go into further detail about how the harmonics are “enhanced” or how it can sound better than a real life instrument. Is Martin’s music box plugin adding some extra harmonics, or maybe removing some? Any idea how he’s achieving the sound that makes it “better than real life”?
@blahorgaslisk7763
@blahorgaslisk7763 Жыл бұрын
@@Hoovaloov Real life instruments are limited by things like materials, geometry, and resonance. They are mechanical constructions that has to conform to the laws of physics. The synthesized sounds have none of these limitations, that way they can be closer to "perfect" than any natural instrument is capable of. Using research we have also figured out some harmonies that most people find extra pleasing, and those can be mixed into the synthesized sound. This result in a sound that tickles your brain just right. Another thing that no physical instrument is capable of is a perfectly flat response curve. It's always a compromise with some bias towards certain frequencies and with resonance in the instrument causing harmonies for certain frequencies that doesn't occur at others. This way it can sound "better" as in more perfect, than any real world instrument. But it's also a "dead" sound. Every note sounds the same, you don't get the character of the instrument, the soul som would probably call it. It's a bit like retouched pictures of beautiful people. They look gorgeous, there's no denying that. Better than the originals in the details. But they also tend to lack "life". When the defects are deleted it some how becomes less. That's why I say it's situational. Sometimes this perfect sound is what you want to use. At other times you want the life that all the imperfections, colors, that are added by the instrument. Perfection isn't always what we want. If that was the universal goal then Punk music would never had happened...

I know several vets who were wounded during the last great music box war. The tonal devastation was gruesome, and the 19th century was almost obliterated! The damage to equal temperament tuning may take years to recover. But, in a NICK OF TIME, the glorious Speldosa arrived on the scene, and suddenly, there was peace in our time, actually, lots of pieces, because --- Martin is a composer. Okay that was humor, but now I am serious. I got the Speldosa from Klevgrand, and it was super easy to purchase and install. MOTU Digital Performer 11 (the world's clunkiest DAW EVER!) actually LIKES IT. Sounds great and lots of fun to play. So far I have managed to play every major scale that is in the key of C! Such great progress! And now I can start on my Magnum Opus, "Grand Chopsticks Concerto for Speldosa" featuring a 200 piece marching band with tap dancing choir. It's not as great as Wintergatan piece, but, times are tough after the wars. Thanks Martin for all your work to establish musical pieces in our time.

@meteorplum
@meteorplum Жыл бұрын
In the first test, I picked #3 to start with, and then I realized that maybe I don't know what qualifications we're going for, so it's worth asking "What does a music box sound like?" And instead of thinking about music boxes, let's think about pianos first. Specifically, let's think about pianos in saloons in the American West. If you're making a Western, and you use the sound of someone playing a Steinway model D concert grand as the sound of a saloon piano, many people will think it's "wrong", even though the tonality will be gorgeous and the pitches perfect. If you change the instrument to a new, upright piano, fewer people will have trouble with the sound, but those who do will still think that it's "wrong", because even though the sound has the right characteristics of the instrument on screen, it will sound too "clean", too on pitch. Anyone who has played a piano that has been moved somewhere with very low humidity and a lot of dust, and which has not received regular cleaning or tuning, will know that the instrument will have specific defects. So if you don't use the sound of such a piano, then it will be off to people. There is a similar issue with music boxes. Most people, if they are familiar with music boxes, will only know ones that fit in the hand, made of plastic or very thin metal, and have a limited pitch range. If the mechanism is mostly metal, then there are sharp mechanical noises, some of which repeat with each note, and some which are constant while the music box is playing. The larger music boxes seen in various museums, so of which you featured on the channel, will have better quality sound and a wide pitch range, but they also have their own mechanical noises. And this leads back to the music box plugins. I picked Speldosa at first because it sounded "the best". But as I heard more plugins, I realized that I was grading them on how "clean" the sounds were, and that isn't what actual music boxes tend to sound like. After I factored in the idea of having the plugin be able to reproduce an actual music box, I decided on #6. And with your breakdown of each plugin's features, I can see why #8 was the most expensive, and why I might pick it if I needed to simulate a music box for a movie, and didn't have someone to build a music box for me. So, this is a long version of having people ask what they're looking for when they need an instrument plugin, because only then could they judge which ones might suit their needs.
@Aeleas
@Aeleas Жыл бұрын
I am also biased towards Speldosa because your music is what made me start thinking about the music box as an instrument of creation rather than reproduction. I'm absolutely in love with the plugin.

I think depending on what you want to achieve, some have their place, and some are just not suitable. E. g. if you want a "clean sound" in all pitch ranges, I think yours is the best. Probably best if you plan on adding your own choice of effects, so having a consistent "starting point" is good. If you want something that imitates physical behavior where different lengths sound differently, then something like 8DIO is really nice, or Fracture Sounds has those few pitches that just ring entirely differently, almost like overdrive, as if those prongs were of "unfortunate" size. The Victorian Music Box has more emphasis on the "click" that the sprongs makes when the pin lets go of them, and the StudioLinked one even moreso (if that's what you want).

The Wintergatan sound was unmistakable, also being much cleaner with a more spatial sound and longer reverb. A beautiful sound, but in some ways a bit less music box-like and heading more towards instruments like vibraphones. Some of them were objectively bad, but a few of them had that initial click and grittiness and you’d typically associate with a music box. Ultimately it’s all down to personal tastes and preferences, and if you’re a music maker, what type of sound you want and how it fits into the mix. But, I think most people on here would immediately pick out Speldosa in a blind test because that’s what most people here are looking for and want to hear.

In the blind test I didn't want to try and guess which was yours, as I knew I'd be disappointed if I got it wrong, so I just decided which once I liked the most, and of course it was Speldosa! XD

Soniccouture makes a great Kontakt music box as well, I've been using it a lot and it's super nice (and versatile), you might want to check it out as well

When you get into the features I think the other plugins do have some nice sounds in there that could be comparable, but the backwards sound is just too awesome. Speldosa also wins the default sound, I think. I like Speldosa best, but the others still have their places, I think.

Speldosa is indeed the most acurate, thus best of all. Really sounds amazing, very a true music box sound. I also like #7 (Tiny Box), second most "true" music box sound to my ears. Others are... well... less enjoyable (I'm being polite)

3 is the best in the blind test, alot of the other ones sounded like when a mic peaks when someone is screaming

in the blind test, i prefered the sound of number 3, it had a more full sound. It maybe because i listen to so much of your music I am bias. I did like 5 too

This may be sacrilege but I really wish there was a way to reduce the sustain or control the ADSR, too many low notes make the sound sound muddy

During the blind play through my first thought was that number 3 was the best followed closely by 6. I also thought this was a review of everything EXCEPT Speldosa.

Me, listening to the music boxes: Hmm. #3 is definitely my favorite. All the low notes sound round and full and the higher notes don't become pitchy and broken Martin: You've activated my trapcard! That's MY music box!! Me: HAH well there you have it!

I'd say it's very situational. The immediate out of the box experience is not really all that telling. But my immediate reaction was that the Wintergatan plugin had a sound that really made me want more. But that's not really fair as some of the others have very nice sound modes. You just have to know how to use them. Personally I have no way to evaluate the user interface or features available. I'm finding it interesting how some has very intricate modulation of resonance frequencies and the materials used for the music box they are trying to emulate. The vintergatan plugin doesn't seem to have any of that, and is just aimed at producing a sound that makes you want to hear more even if it doesn't really sound like any real world instrument.

First blind test feeling: 1- Sound ok, not more. 2- Electronic sound, bad. 3- Clean sound, could have a bit more of that clunkiness from the metal finger sound 4- Sound electronic. 5- Out of tune, trash. 6- Have the proper clunk at the start, but sound terribly dry and lack all bass. Feels like my ears are plugged. Also sound cracked. 7- Also sound dry, slightly cracked 8- Dry, sound slightly out of tune, also cracked. For the first test, #3 is best by far.
