I'm working out of a 4 drawer cart. I've utilized the space so much that I probably have 5x the tools in it than you showed what you put in yours. I'm reduced to using a 4 drawer cart because my actual tool box was stolen.
@ObservationofLimits3 ай бұрын
I have a 5-drawer cart for common tools and a 46" masterforce toolbox for electrical, spares, more spares, big stuff not used as often, spares, spare allen parts, a whole drawer of hose jumpers for greasing to testing, gloves and weld wear. The 5-drawer is decent. Mine is PACKED and the bottom tends to be a point of failure if you're constantly moving it over a less than polished concrete floor. The top of mine also has ALL my sockets (including full sets of short and long and oversize Allen) and it starts to sag (so my 5-row socket holders are bolted down to keep them from sliding around). I keep most of my power tools in the bottom area along with plano boxes of small screws and nuts, and rags. Wish it had the side desk but there's no space on it for that. I do wish it had proper latches like my masterforce box where it locks both sides of the drawers. The lid latch is definitely needed for the full-width drawer or they'll pop open.

@@larrydudgeon2846 I agree, very poor utilization. I should post photos of my box. It's loaded to bear. Surprisingly not that hard to push around 400# of tools on the unmodified flimsy bottom and legs and cheap wheels. Stiffening up the bottom and welding on (to keep the static wheels from shifting) better wheels and it's absolutely amazing.

@@tuckertech check your State laws. Many have consumer protection laws that allow you to claim the savings from an undisclosed sale within a certain period of time. Example: if I buy something and in the next month it goes on ANY sort of sale (including a discontinued item clearance), I can take my receipt in and claim that discount as a refund (although the law does allow them to only give you no-expiration store credit). But it has to be an undisclosed sale. I.e. if they send you a flyer two weeks ahead of time or have a flyer posted at the entrance, that counts as you having notice.

In southern Illinois about two months ago my local Home Depot had the 42" top & bottom for $498 and the 52" workbench for $398!!! So... I bought both! The metal is a gauge or so thinner than USG boxes. However, the drawers easily hold all my tools when only one layer deep and organized. With the 42" chest and 52" workbench there is plenty of space to grow. I prefer how the drawers move in and out on the Husky. They are really smooth, surprisingly little wobble, little droop when loaded and the soft close actually works great. I thought the thinner metal would bother me. After a couple months I have ZERO regrets. They have held up great. They both sit stationary and if mobile could be seen at a bit flimsy. I've pulled all the drawers out and it's actually built very nice on the inside. The only guy I have to impress is myself and I saved a lot even over Harbor Freight!!! I'm impressed Husky!
@CodyBuilds5 ай бұрын
I work out of a 52” husky rolling cabinet and top chest in my primary garage. Your assessment is spot on. The US General boxes are heavier with thicker gauge metal but for the vast majority of DIY’ers the Husky boxes would be more than sufficient. 5 years later and I’m still happy with my Husky setup. I went with the new Series 3 boxes so eventually I can add on/customize my setup. Thanks for watching and commenting!
@ObservationofLimits3 ай бұрын
They're a gauge THINNER? I'm pretty sure the USG 4-drawer is already 18/20 gauge. Don't quote me, but I believe the 5-drawer is also mostly 18 except the exterior of the chest compartment is 16. No way you have a full 52" that's 20 or 22-gauge unless it's double walled. If you had to move a 52" box even close to full and it was that thin it would self-destruct. I just looked. Standard duty is indeed 20/22. Absolutely insane. A 52" box only rated for 1800# (and I'd never trust that). It's gotta be double walled. The heavy duty is 18/19, professional is 16. Rated for 3800# and 6000# I'd be very careful if you ever have to move it when loaded. My biggest complaint with most boxes is that they tend to use shitty slides. And then, they order custom slides from accuride or whoever so you can't just buy the next heavier model and not have floppy drawers. Usually not a huge issue to modify the drawer for the standard slides but annoying. Been awhile since I have investigated boxes but over 10 years ago, Westward's boxes came with all 100# standard slides (so 200-400# per drawer) and 16 gauge from top to bottom. And they were only about $1000 for a 54" box. The best part was they used standard slide models from whoever and if you really needed it, you could call up accuride, buy sets of 150# or 200# slides for about $40-50 at the time, and load your drawers with blocks of lead 🤣 I was really tempted but then HF came out with these 5-drawers and working at a foundry, I decided that would be less painful to replace if damaged and buy a large shop box later. Then Menards had 46" box+chest combos for $600 one after-Father's Day (it was significantly cheaper than the next two SMALLER sizes) and I couldn't pass up such a deal (and the gunmetal color is pretty 😘)
@ObservationofLimits3 ай бұрын
Soft close is the tits. That is one thing I wish I could mod into my HF carts. I open and close drawers probably 30-100 times a day (depends on the drawer) and after years of being overloaded, dragged over rough concrete (no such luck to have smooth, polished floors), and a couple instances of a drawer missing both latches and sliding open only to whack something while being dragged behind me (often pushing 2 carts at once), the interia of about 500# of tools and carts has eventually made the bottom deep drawer a little floppy (works fine, just noticeably not closed straight mostly because it only latches on one side).
@denimvelvet46703 ай бұрын
I started off with a tiny little set of drawers and a tool box so tiny that when I moved up to the five drawer cart I actually had several empty drawers. It was a pain to put together, but worth every penny. Was able to wheel it around anywhere I needed it. Made doing work on another stall a breeze. Recently moved up to the 42 instead of the 56 because the stall at work didn't have space for a 56. Now I've moved to a different stall with more space, but I don't have to trade out my 42. Like you said, and what I love about these, I can just buy more space. Some side cabinets or the 27 inch cab. Then if I get the 27 in cab I could even get a chest to sit on top of that. Meanwhile every few months at the shop we get a new guy who falls in love with a cab off of Matco or Snap On, and learns that those payments add up quickly. It's almost a tradition at this point watching the Matco/Snap On guy show up on a odd day to reclaim a box. I wound up selling my five drawer cart to one of those guys recently.

Just started out as an apprentice at a dealership and I built myself out a five drawer roll cart. My only complaint about it is I keep my battery chargers in the top of the box because that's the only spot to get the power to. Now the problem is you can't shut the top of the box with any batteries on the chargers aside from the 1.5ah Bauer battery and it's a bummer. I'd like to be able to move my cart over to the wall at the end of the day, plug my power strip into the wall to let everything charge and then lock it up. I understand maybe shutting it might not be a good idea due to no airflow and possibly overheating the charger or battery but Imean cmon... we don't really worry about that.

I also find that I don't use the storage on the very bottom of the cart. I use it to store my boxes and extra boots but that's it

Cody, great video, very informative. Just wondering, on your 42"roll cab. Does your roll cab have 2 -90* angle braces underneath the roll cab, between the wheels? The reason I ask, I bought 2- 42" roll cab recently, same color. One had more and beefier bracing (4 total), and the other had fewer and flimsier bracing, only (2). Facing the roll cab, one had U shaped bracing at each set of wheels, along with 2- 90* angle bracing between the wheels. The other had only 2- 90* angle brace at the wheels, instead of the U shaped bracing. No bracing between the wheels.

So I’ve had the 56x24 box since they were released and I love that people are finally making reviews on the series 3 lineup. Personally my issue with them are the drawers feel a little bit flimsy, but other than that it’s the perfect for entry level-mid level tech in a real world scenario since the 56 comes with the power drawer which is decently good to hold some batteries since my big 8.0 high output doesn’t really fit in the small drawer. And for someone just starting out I would say the 42 box or the 5 drawer cart is the best option to start out on. Great video man hope to see more out in the future

Really gave a good visual comparison by packing the same tools in each box and showing the amount of extra room in the next larger box. I was seriously considering purchasing the 56in cabinet, but after viewing your video I'm now thinking more about getting a 42inch and 27inch as you suggested. Makes a lot of sense for flexibility that you could bolt them together or leave apart for ease in moving around. Maybe Harbor Freight will take your suggestion about offering a top option in the future. I think I will be fitting a plywood top and coating it with truck bedliner for protection and easy cleanup. One of the better toolbox comparison videos by far!!!!!!

This is a great video that is packed with information. Subscribed! Several years ago I upgraded from my old and way too small Craftsman box to a Performax 40" wide and 24" deep combo box for the deep drawers. It's a great box with a built-in surge strip and even an LED light in the lid. The drawer slides are nice and smooth, too. Menards must have been clearing them out, because they changed manufacturers and based on my last visit to Menards, the new Performax boxes are junk. My current box is an awkward height and it's not compatible with most of the side cabinets I've seen (including Performax) and I'd have to cut some metal to modify it to fit a locker. The Masterforce boxes did seem nice, but will they change manufacturer's, too? I wish I'd gone with US General instead, because they are great at interchangeability, as you mentioned. Why didn't I? I pass 3 Menards, 2 Lowes and a Home Depot on my way to Harbor Freight...
@CodyBuilds3 ай бұрын
Thanks for sharing. My dad is a Menards guy so he has several iterations of Menards boxes, Masterforce and Montezuma I believe. It seems like Menards has gone through a number of different suppliers and redesigns on their boxes. I know the older Masterforce box my Dad has is the equivalent of a current Craftsman box. It's fine, but definitely on the lighter duty side. The Montezuma boxes are fantastic quality but no longer available at Menards. The current Masterforce box is much higher quality than previous iterations. The thing I like most about the US General line is the interchangeability of components AND it's a new line released within the last year so should have a decent shelf life moving forward. If you buy now there should be plenty of time moving forward to buy expansion pieces before the next line of boxes is released and these are retired.

@CodyBuildsАй бұрын
I personally don’t move my boxes around once I have them in place but there are a couple options. One is to replace the non swivel casters with swivel casters. If you have a setup like mine with the narrow box, I wouldn’t have a problem removing the static casters from the smaller box and placing the swivel casters on the same side of both boxes. Basically your smaller box will only have two casters on it, swivel casters on the outside. I’d be more hesitant to go that route if I had two 42” boxes.

Got my 4 drawer for $100 used. Looking into getting the 42” bc I’ve maxed the 4 drawer out almost immediately and still have stuff unorganized and in another box as well

Great video! I ended up getting the 42" roll cab in blue. Love it. I came from a 26" Husky box and the difference in quality is huge. Like and sub. 👍🏽

Have you done any mods to the 5 drawer mechanic cart?
@CodyBuildsАй бұрын
Only mod I did to the 5 drawer was the latch mod so I don’t have to open the top to unlock the drawers. I’ve converted my 5 drawer cart to a welder cart now that I have the new toolboxes.

A nice 1-1.5" thick piece of butcher block would make a great top. You can do an oil, acrylic, or poly finish.
@CodyBuildsАй бұрын
That would work great! I ended up using 3/4” plywood and Formica to make my counter tops.

During the Black Friday ITC sale I was looking at a returned green 5 Drawer cart that they had marked at $223 , it had some damage & the drawers stuck really bad... since the new ones are on sale for $189.99 I was thinking that if I could get them to knock off $60 -$70 I would consider it... Before I could even ask, a manager told me he'd let me have it for $100... He saw I wasn't really thrilled about the damage or the green... He said he had a black one he'd sell for $100 as well... it had zero damage but one drawer sticks a little... So long story short... I got a "new" 5 drawer cart for $100...

Series 3 cabs are sick not the second a see their price i stop looking at them. Perhaps the price compared to the regular carts makes it make more sense but at the glance that I make and the establishment i walk into, I don't expect something that size to cost that much. Maybe it's best if and when I can find a good deal.

I have a 42" top and bottom and will eventually add another. As of now, I'm leaning between a 27" roller cabinet and the 15" end cabinet. Even though it costs more I wonder if the 27" cabinet wouldn't be the best way to go. I know how space needs tend to grow. Whichever I choose, I'm in no hurry and I'll wait for a sale. Anybody have experience with both and have an opinion? Edit: By the way, I'm extremely happy with my 42" set up. Didn't pay full price but even at full price, I think it's the best tool box for the money in that size range.

Stack a bottom and top 27" which gives a ton of storage with a compact footprint.

@CodyBuilds silly me I forgot to ask which one. I wanted to ask about the 27 x 22 roll cabinet lol

No worries. The inside of the drawers are 22.25”W x 19.375” deep.

@CodyBuilds that's absolutely perfect, they make the foam trays very close to that size. Have you heard of foam fit tools?

I went with the Masterforce boxes and cabinets and love them. I have husky, us general and masterforce The masterforce is higher quality. The drawer latches are so much nicer.
@CodyBuilds3 ай бұрын
Thanks for sharing. Yes I agree on the Masterforce latching system. My father recently purchased a new Masterforce box and I was definitely jealous of the latches compared to the US General boxes.

What are your thoughts on craftsman tool box . . .
@CodyBuilds3 ай бұрын
I haven't owned a craftsman box for about 15 years so I don't have much experience with the newer boxes. However, what I've seen in the store from Craftsman was not very impressive. I thought they were very cheaply made boxes even compared to the Husky boxes at Home Depot. I will say that Craftsman has started putting out a premium line of boxes and tools, the V-series, that look to be of a much higher quality, but with that comes a higher price tag as well.

Im still waiting for my 20% or 25% off coupon to snag a series 3 box. I need a 56 inch cuz my 5 drawer cart is not cutting it. I have too many tools that I have acquired and will acquire in the future.

What do you thinkg about the 6 drawer $599 box (non series 3)
@CodyBuilds4 ай бұрын
I haven’t personally owned one so I hesitate to give too much advice. They seem to be of high quality from what I’ve seen in the store. It has more storage than the 42” rolling cabinet at the same price so that’s a plus. I would say it’s a good option if you don’t have plans for expanding your storage in the future and you like the option of the open storage on top. My experience with the carts was that the lids were always open so I rarely ever used the top as a work space.

huskys are good boxes, i have a few of them. the drawers really arent ideal for mechanic use. more for just home owner stuff but they hold up. and they arent modular. the usg has a box good enough for anybodys use.

I have to roll my cart all over the plant (corrugate plant). The lid lock is actually a godsend. I would delete it if the USG cart had proper double latches on the drawers rather than the dinky side latch. Only downside I would say to the USG is that the legs don't sit INSIDE the bottom tray but rather outside and the seams aren't welded on the bottom tray. I have probably 400# of tools in my 6-drawer cart and after a few years of dragging it around the bottom starts to fail. I have modified mine to stiffen it up, secure the edges, corners, and seams, and reinforced the legs. Ironically, it's been shitty forklift operators destroying my USG cart more than anything. I've gone through SIX since 2020 because operators drive blind.

Also, I have full sets of short 12s, deep 6s (1/4&3/8), hex, torx, adapters, crows, and 1/2" short sets. The top area does start to sag. It paid to buy some 5-lane socket holders (they pack in much tighter) and drill and bolt them in place.

I appreciate you doing this great comparison video, I did notice few benefits to the 4 draw over the 5 drawer. The 4 drawer has big draws actually open flush with the front of the cabinet. Which can make the difference of getting that tool on the back out depending on your set up. Alot of high end carts have that feature.Also the 4 drawer had holes in the lower cross member where you can store all kinds of stuff like those screw driver that are too tall for the top; where the 5 drawer does not have that feature. Just some cool little features that Along with the increase in width to store larger tool with out cutting across drawers. I personally think make the 4 drawer superior to the 5 drawer. I've been living with the 5 drawer for 4 years now and I'm seriously think of switching to the 4 drawer. But thanks again for the video helps me make a educated decision.

The 4-drawer is worse in so many ways if you actually have to move the box often. And trust me, the first time a drawer slides open on you and hits something will be the last time because the drawer will never close right again.
