I feel so lucky, I grew up in a small village where the farmers were the backbone of our culture. The man that would pay your dad his salary would sit down at our kitchen table, enjoy the meal my mom made and speak in words of gratitude even though he had more than any of us. He would be there if the markets were down and make sure my family was doing okay. Not just by words and team meetings but by showing up with a wad of cash when my dad got sick and couldn't provide anymore as he literally was unable to walk. These men were disagreeable to the fabric of their bones but would carry their community and provide without expectation of return. Moving to the city was a culture shock for me personally. So much words said without content, so much promises made without loyalty and so much backpaddling when they were needed the most. I remember like yesterday when I visited my dad and went to go to work in the morning and hit black ice into a ditch, I called my employer in a panic to tell him what happened and he was angry at me while that same man that was at our kitchen table showed up with his tractor before the emergency services and pulled me out. He called me in, made his wife make me a hot soup, drop me off at my work and made sure my car was ready to go 2 days later without putting the bill on me. This was the point my whole perspective changed on how a man should carry his family and his community, I would rather die with empty pockets knowing I did right for my people than making 200k a year and have nothing to show for it besides an over inflated ego, I wish I could transfer this to others without sounding like a stuck up douchebag.

When I see a job offering competitive pay, I don't think that means the pay is similar to that of similar positions, I think it means you will need to compete with others for your salary. I figured competitive salary means that you compete with your coworkers for a bigger slice of this pie.

Competitive title is worth more than competitive pay. I learned that once you put the word Manager on your resume, even if you didn't do squat as a manager, you will always be able to hire into management positions.

Right now only jobs advertised in the State of Colorado are required by law to document their pay range within the job posting. For companies advertising jobs nationally, the way around this has been to post an opening as "remote" and state "this role is currently not available in CO". If they must include CO then you will notice the pay range is spread very wide (e.g., starting pay range: $75,000 - $150,000 depending on experience). I have also noticed companies changing job titles to make it more difficult to narrow down transparency via Glassdoor (e.g., changing a new job posting title as "Customer Service Leader" instead of "Customer Service Manager" or my favorite generalist title now is "Head of X" replacing something similar to "Director or VP of X").

One of the things I hate about the job search. By not giving you a salary $$ upfront, the company is in complete control. Then when they offer you the job and tell you the salary they are still in control and you have to make a decision right on the spot. This also sets the stage for how the company will treat you once you're hired.
@DRNT9403 жыл бұрын
They do that thing of waiting till your there to tell you it's shit pay because they think either tour to exhausted to refuse or just can't afford to at that point. If they won't NEGOTIATE pay don't apply. I can't express my thoughts beyond that....

This is sort of like how online restaurant menus don't include the prices. "They" don't want us thinking about what we're going to make or what we're going to spend. Just a bunch of bells and whistles trying to get us to commit - get anchored to a decision because the act of getting the information we want to make an informed decision has become painful. Same thing, different impact to your life.

Company here termed competitive pay at $10 per hour. They use your car (No 50 cents per mile isn't enough to compensate for car repairs) and expect you to be available 24/7. After a while physical injuries become an issue also. The burnout factor is high. Then, if that doesn't add up for you clients threaten to sue you directly for Company errors on top of that. Worst industry ever! Someone needs to develop a formula for pay determination based on education and experience. It's not right that a 20-something and a 50-something are paid the same. When I've asked I get the quiet effect. Unbelievably not right!

"Competitive pay" = minimum wage - because most others are paying it. Good benefits = legal minimums we can get away with termed in such a way that it looks like we are giving you more, eg UK = 20 days minimum holiday are now termed as 28 days holiday pa but that includes the 8 public (bank) holidays.

I will never forget a candidate my office took to lunch and had not discussed the pay range before the interview. It turned out the top of range for the job was 12K less than the candidate expected. Very awkward lunch. List a pay range in job ads.

Applied for a job I was way overqualified for a few months ago that didn’t list a salary in the description. Went into the interview and asked straight up what salary was and was told “it’s competitive.” Thankfully a much better job came along and I didn’t have to hear what “competitive” meant.
