That dyno room is the most idiotic thing I've ever seen. No exhaust extractors or anything. Set aside how bad it is to breath that shit in, but think about your engine. Fun Fact: A diesel engine that has optimized cylinder scavenging, and purging will not produce any black smoke, and will reach up to 45% efficiency! Sadly instead of making their engines run as efficiently, and as smooth as possible they just add boost, and fuel in hopes of power.

@Iceheart7218 жыл бұрын
When your talking performance, especially performance at the peak of an engines capacity you will always have access fuel. Doesn't matter if it's diesel or gas. Prime example look at the top fuel drag cars. Fastest accelerating vehicles on the planet. Just look at the pipes at night time and you can see the nitro leaving the exhaust. There's so much extra fuel it doesn't even have a chance to combust it all in the cylinders and they shoot flames almost 10ft out of the side of each car. In the right conditions you can see liquid trickling out of the exhaust. Yes throwing air and fuel at a engine is how you make power. Thats how everyone does it. How much air and fuel can you get it, how can you do it quickly and how fast can you get it back out are the core premise of horsepower. Could they make them more efficient? Yes. But this is a dyno event the trucks are tuned for performance only anyway.
@1tylerproud8 жыл бұрын
mrsuperbuckets it's not in hopes of power. They make power. Lots of power. Boost and fuel are a staple of increasing power.
@MCMonsterbuilder8 жыл бұрын
Yeah but the thing is it makes more power, not that healthy for the Engine or turbos I suppose but it makes power and it's probaby too difficult for most people to tune it to gradually increase fuel with boost so that it makes power without smoke. I mean most of them clear up when boost is fully there but yeah nothing to defend here. If I had a Diesel I'd try to keep the smoke on a minimum level but then I wouldn't want to go for maximum power and torque, I'd keep it usable.

@mibars8 жыл бұрын
They actually explain it in the video: Rod angles are smaller decreasing sideway forces on pistons, cylinders, etc.
@rrpeters8 жыл бұрын
Destroking a motor reduces the rotational mass and allows the engine to spin higher with less load. As long as the fuel system and heads can handle the higher flow rates you will make more power and cause less stress on the bottom end, especially under boost.
@BenLeBlanc18 жыл бұрын
Why don't they pipe the smoke out of the dyno room? Would probably make tuning a lot easier as the air would be more consistent.

I was starting to wonder whether this would even be up on youtube. As a guy who doesn't have any affinity towards any of the engines in use here, I find it interesting that the Cummins engines tend to make enormous amounts of torque and they make their power at lower engine speeds. I just wish I could do this with an old 1950's GMC with a Detroit Diesel 2-stroke under the hood. That would bring some excitement to this competition.
@wantu2much8 жыл бұрын
just wondering why they put the fuel challenge on the dyno vs out on the road. It seems like they dont want the trucks to drive on the street for the event. i think the best part of the challenge was to see them out on the street.

Feels like the power levels have come down from last year?: Hell some of the guys I work with are making the same number on mostly stock Cummins with tunes?
@NBSV18 жыл бұрын
Daniel Perry On a dyno like this it's very hard to get the turbos to spool. The engines make lots of torque but have a short rpm range so it runs out of rpm before the turbos can really spool. So, most of them could likely make quite a bit more power if they had a way to better load the truck down so turbos could spool.
@DanielPerryRally8 жыл бұрын
Makes perfect sense, feels as though they could make heavier rollers for the dyno and then calibrate the system to compensate for that?

@jessekulbe18552 жыл бұрын
When the smoke clears up it'll typically clear any soot out of the turbos so as long as it's not lugging down constantly its gonna be mostly fine for the turbos. Excess fueling can burn out pistons though

@MMXProductions8 жыл бұрын
Boring as hell without the champ. Why "reset the field"? Create some hype. Pretty disappointed they didn't bring him back
@diltzm8 жыл бұрын
Yeah if they wanted trucks with intact emissions equipment just create a second class. Have an Open class where anything goes and a Street Mod class with emissions stuff. And they're not even driving over the continental divide this year either.
@MMXProductions8 жыл бұрын
That would go a long ways to improve the competition. Motortrend is such a big platform for motorsports, and this years DPC just seems amateurish
@nealuss8 жыл бұрын
An emissions class wouldn't really work with modern diesels. Anything with DPF or DEF, for example, has to have everything deleted to do any kind of worthwhile tune. Any other emissions equipment is really just B.S. anyway. Gone are the days of a simple tuner adding 100+ HP. A full turbo back exhaust is required for anything you can actually measure.

it seems like there is a lot more soot than last year's Diesel truck challenge but less horsepower and torque. So bad tunes for everyone i think is the issue because the soot is gas burning in the exhaust and not getting used up in the cylinders
