Complete AirTag Field test. Track things and people with the Apple AirTags! Im trying to track my fried downtown Stockholm with an AirTag. Will i find him?
Will i find him using the AirTag?
To be able to know how the Apple AirTag is actually working and performing, you have to do field tests with real people in real environments.
In this video, you will see how the AirTag works when you lose an item and try to find it with an AirTag.
We will test if anyone can identify a lost/found AirTag and if so. How much info can you get from a found AirTag? Will you see any info if the AirTag is not marked as “Lost” by the owner?
We will also answer the question: What is the difference between Notify When Found vs Enabling Lost Mode in the AirTag settings.
Lastly, we will try to stalk a person with an AirTag by dropping an Apple AirTag in a person's pocket!
Can you track, stalk and follow someone with an AirTag?
Will the tracked / stalked person be notified that he or she is followed and that an AirTag is attached and used?

I subscribed too - this is a great video. Please also retry the test during peak office/shopping time when there are more people about to pickup on the tag and to send its location. In my tests, when there were no people about, I got very poor readings for location. As crowds increased, the location and frequncy of updates improved.

I believe the person being tracked is notified only when they return to their home or a location where they normally spend time like an office and the AirTag is still with them. I think that’s to prevent tracking notifications from being sent to passengers on a vehicle when someone’s luggage with a tag is moving with them. You don’t want baggage handlers to get tracking notifications while they’re driving bags around an airport. Deciding if/when to give tracking warnings is a compromise between providing protection and not being annoying.

Thanks Tennessee Phil. However I do not believe your assumption is correct. I base that on 4 factors: 1. That would make it possible for someone to track someone in depth if you are on a vacation for example where you maybe have a new “home base” every night. 2. We are continuing to test that feature and we have not been able to confirm that it’s based on a return to home basis. 3. Apple did not mention anything about returning to “home” in their presentation. 4. I assume that it has to be at least 2 factors. 1. Distance travelled. 2. Time spent. That’s why a baggage handler would not be suffering from this. I’ll make sure to provide confirmed info when I have it available 😃

@@MK-Tech When we tried it, it told the other person when they returned home that my AirTag was tracking them. However I think you must be correct because people go on holiday and away on business etc, so there must be additional ways that Apple helps prevent stalking. I would be interested to see more! The person has to go home. When he reaches home, and there’s an airtag, he will be notify that he’s being tag when he reaches his home geo location. Because if it’s a family member or tracking your dog, or your bicycle, it’s not stalking because it’s your own home address.

It seems it does not send the location of the AirTag in "lost mode", but the coordinates of the iPhone which is passing-by. Wonder how this will work in bad cell phone reception areas; will it then send the coordinates of the original location where it picked up the AirTag signal or only send coordinates when it is back in cellphone range.

Lost mode is not affecting when a location is sent. It only enables the ability for someone to identify the owner and see the contact info to the owner if the AirTag is found. The position will only update when it’s connected vis cell or wifi to the findmy network.

I just bought a box of four AirTags and have set them to three different items. The only negative I can see so far is that if you have one in a zippered pocket in a handbag, it muffles the loudness of the beeping. If you have lots of people around you or music, you may not hear the beeping. Thanks for the video!

I have a question, I just picked up 4 of these things….. how does the left behind feature work, or I should say how far away do you have to be from the AirTag before it notifies you, is it just out of Bluetooth range or in that small medium and large range that you can adjust for the air tag itself?

Hi Scott, I would say that you in average get notified when you are about 500 meters away. So it’s well above Bluetooth range. Sometimes you get notified earlier tho. But somewhere around there. I have some videos on that too pic too :)

This is the reason why I would wait until all the bugs worked out of their tags if I would ever buy any. Because we were told that you’re supposed to be able to detect unwanted AirTags they are yours right away. Or pretty close to that so if you’re not get an update with your tag on you.

@@MK-Tech Not sure what happened to my other comment, but it would be good to test this scenario: Does an iPhone with no internet connectivity (WiFi or Cellular) report the position of an AirTag it passes by the next time the internet connectivity is restored… or does it do nothing? This has huge implications. If it DOES report the AirTag location, it means that AirTag could (in theory) be located in areas that have no internet service at all (middle of nowhere), as long as someone with an iPhone walked past, then went somewhere later with internet service. This could be huge.

When you go to a 'significant location' with a surreptitious AirTag on you, it will notify you immediately. Otherwise, it might be several hours before it warns the tracked person. I tried this test with a work colleague, and the moment they got home they received a warning. If Anders went to his work or home, he'd receive a warning. In a way, this is good, not worrying at all. You want some sort of time window where you could track a stolen item. If you really want to track people you can buy a GPS/Cellular tracker on Amazon for $20.

Apple needs to walk the fine line of determining whether if the airtag is been used for stalking or that if the airtag is on an item that is been stolen. As a a result, Apple decided to only notify the person of the airtag that does not belong to them only when they are home. This way, if the airtag is with an item that has been stolen; even though the thief will now know that he has to remove the airtag, you will still know where he lives and try to retrieve it. But if the airtag has been used as a stalking device, even though the stalker will know where you live, you also will know the serial number of the device and report that to the proper authority to see who has been stalking you. This is how Apple able to solve this difficult conundrum.

What versions of iOS were you both using? It’s my understanding the stalkee needs iOS 14.5 to be notified he is being stalked but could still take up to three days. The cops will probably find the body before then. Also to get location updates from random passerbys, they need to be running iOS 13 or later.

Multiple sources said that you will only be notified that you are being stalked when you get back to your home location of your iPhone/Apple ID. You should have your friend go back to his home and see if it notifies him to confirm this.

Nice Test. I read that the notification of being tracked is only played after being at home. So that it is somehow protected against being stolen. Wouldn't be so nice if your bag got stolen and the thief gets a notification that you know that he stole the bag and can throw away the tag. If he gets the notification at home you know where your bag is. And for tracking it is maybe not the best solution but a compromise as it saves you for long term tracking but in this case the tracker knows your home adress. So there are positives and negatives about this solution.

Another test idea... I wonder how a location spoofer would affect the Airtag's reported location. And if it would go off of the main phone it's traveling with that has a spoofer enabled or if it would still try to use other surrounding phones to override the main spoofer-enabled phone's reported location that it's traveling with. I have a question. Do the iPhones that picks up the tag location, as they walk by the tag, know and/or can see that they are picking up the signal? Thanks Charles Vane. Unfortunately I’m not able to confirm that yet. But I’ll make sure to when I have the data. However I do not believe your assumption is correct. I base that on 4 factors: 1. That would make it possible for someone to track someone in depth if you are on a vacation for example where you maybe have a new “home base” every night. 2. We are continuing to test that feature and we have not been able to confirm that it’s based on a return to home basis. 3. Apple did not mention anything about returning to “home” in their presentation. 4. I assume that it has to be at least 2 factors. 1. Distance travelled. 2. Time spent. But I can definitely be wrong there. I’ll make sure to provide confirmed info when I have it available 😃 Thank you so much!

@@MK-Tech actually your 1st point is very interesting. According on other tests find online and on KZbin, the notification of “been followed” should present itself to the “victim” only when he/she is returned home and in that case the airtag will stop to send its location to the “stalker’s phone”. But at that point, unless the stalker is a complete idiot, should already guess what happened and at least have an approximate idea of where the home’s victim could be. But in case of a holiday trip or vacation, if the those are the rules set on the airtag, a person/victim can remain oblivious of being tracked for the whole time.

Great Video and very informative. I like the idea of using the air tag to help find a lost child. However, in your test, "Anders, who is playing the role of the lost child" had an iPhone with him. This iPhone is what was being used to connect to the air tag and thus give you close to real time updates. However, a child would not have an iPhone with them. So, the air tag would only update when "someone" walked by or was near the air tag that was attached to the child. If that was an amusement park, then that might be often because of so many people. - Your thoughts? Would love to do a test with "Anders" being tracked if he didn't have an iPhone with him. I guess the best way to track a child would be to have them wear a Apple Watch that has a data plan and then put that watch into the FIND MY app - then I would track the watch in real time. Yes, this is a much more expensive option with monthly data fees, but it would be in real time and more reliable. Again, great job on the video and test. Looking forward to more information on the "victim" bing notified that they are being tracked.

You are right. The positions are coming from Anders phone. However the test was more about how exact the positions are under optimal conditions. I’ve done a ton of testing and in Sweden where I am it’s working really well due to the high number of iPhones, almost everywhere :)

I wonder what the “range” of detection is? In other words…if an iPhone user walked by my car - how close would the person holding an iPhone need to walk by my car for the air tag to detect the iPhone ? 2 feet from my car, 6 feet, 10 feet, etc? Have you done any testing in regards to range or proximity?

Also bear in mind that the iPhone has have the latest iOS i think or else it won’t update the location? Maybe those people who are passing by have not updated their iOS. But this is a good review, the one i was looking for actually as I plan to put one in my car just in case LOL

Did Apple let you buy your unit WITHOUT providing your AppleID? They refused to sell to anyone here, unless we purchased on our AppleID account. Tracking starts the moment you attempt to buy the unit(s)

I found them also on Amazon: geni.us/apple-airtag Personally, I indeed would like to use my apple id for my ease of organizing my purchases and warranty. You can then link the actual AirTag to any apple id (aka. any iPhone). As far as i am concerned, the device itself is not registered upon purchase, only the purschase itself.

The airtag will only show alert to the thief(if they have iPhone) after they go inside their home(mark as home in your address book). That will also give the owner the same address so now they know where the thief lives. Now if it’s a stalking situation, you can scan the airtag to see the serial then give it to the police so Apple can help them identify who it is registered to

This was a good test, but since the air tags have been out just a few days. The problem may be some people have not updated their phone since air tag release and iOS needed an update to see or recognize the air tags. I would like to see this same test after a week or so and everyone has updated their iOS device. We know that not everyone is diligent about updating devices.
