The battery technology needs to improve a lot We are still dependent on lithium sources which are mainly in China and Australia (I have worked on this field and China has advanced battery technology ). The problem with batteries are after certain number of cycles the Coulombic efficiency decreases due to deposition of dendrites(which is lithium metal). Due to this efficiency will decrease after 400 to 600 cycles. So in order to avoid this we can shift toward solid state batteries. Another problem is when we recycle Lithium and reuse it the efficiency wont be as the previous on (Like it decreases by 20 to 30%). Another problem is the fast charging of batteries will have some effect but this is being taken care today. Even though this is a first step to Electric Vehicles there is a lot of scope for Improvement. My possible suggestions *Use of fuel cells and hydrogen in long run *Use of batteries such as Aloe-Ecell which is run by using chemical energy from plants. If the number of cycles and the efficiency is taken care of then this can be the big thing At the end of the day EV is the next big thing!

I know for a fact that in today's world even though ev's exist, their km range is less and frequent charging is an inconvenience. Also I've seen videos of tesla owners complaining how their car battery efficiency drops after 2 years confirming what you are saying about the decrease caused by deposition of dendrites. You have listed out suggestions for this, but is it actually possible for anyone to implement these ideas, and can you approximately say how long it might take to get these things right?

As someone who has built and driven a electric cycle for the past one year, here are my thoughts 1. most Indians travel less than 20km everyday. we dont need 200km range scooters. 50km will do. 2. I am using a 2kg lithium battery, which gives me a range of 35km without pedalling. top speed of my electric cycle is 30kmph. good enough for city usage. this battery can be taken to flat and charged. if you charge your lithium battery to 90%, you double the charge cycles. so 1000 cycles to 2000 cycles in 90% and 4000 cycles if 80% is charged. this means for the next 8-10 years, i dont have to replace the lithium battery. and the current cost of it is 10k rs, roughly 1000rs per year or 80rs per month. electricity cost is 5paisa per km so my total cost of running is 5paisa / km + 80rs a month. tesla batteries show less than 5% degradation after 10 lakh kms. so the range reduces from 400km to 360km, which is quite usable. unfortunately in 2 wheelers, there is no liquid cooling available, otherwise ather / bajaj / ola would be offering a warranty of 10 years on their battery packs.

So I am an owner of a Mahindra e2o for the past 6 years. Here is my experience: 1. The reason I went for an electric car was two fold. I used to travel 44 km within Bangalore city for my work and I had an Alto prior to this electric car and I used get pain in my glutes pressing the clutch and brakes. The e2o is automatic gear. 2. I never had to charge outside my home.I have a 15 amps charge point in my car park which takes around 5 to 6 hrs to charge. A full charge gives around 105 km (120 km but lets keep a safety margin of 15 km). So with this setup I would need to recharge a car for every 2 days which I would do in the night. So charging issues are non-existant in case you use this for city commute. 3. Charging infra are just coming up for inter city travel and this seems to the main issue. 4. With newer models, which have greater mileage as well as lower charging time, the adoption of EVs would start looking better. 5. The maintanence was minimal in 6 years and I never had an issue with the battery.

As of now, i feel that electric scooters makes more sense. We use scooters nearby our house so range is not a problem. Also, top speed doesn't matter because in country like India, it's impossible to reach top speed with all those potholes and traffic. However, as far as EVs are concerned, we should wait a couple of years for the technology to develop.

The main concern as we are shifting in EV the demand of electricity will increased. In India almost 75-80% electricity is generated by thermal power plant using fossils energy. For shifting in EV sector we need to parallely generate more electricity through renewable sources.

Ya till today around 60% of energy demand is met through coal(might be bit wrong with the exact number). What I feel is that most of the industries are jumping directly into renewable space instead of doing some R&D. For example the maximum achievable efficiency in solar cell which is gallium arsenide is around 40% I guess. So working on technologies to increase this number will surely have an impact.

Using them more consistently - like instead of just saying 1 lakh crore (rupees), if you also say 12 billion USD, people from around the world are able to relate better, without needing to convert. Same goes when talking large numbers use both lakh- crore and million- billion, so that everyone can get the context right away. Absolutely amazing analysis. The thought on CHARGING STATION infra (that it’s NOT REQUIRED AT ALL) is NEW and quite encouraging. Never heard of such a conclusion before. It may eventually turn out to be true but the premise of that conclusion is that people use cars only for city driving (sub-100km/day). Tata is actually pondering on setting up BATTERY Charging-cum-SWAPPING stations rather than charging stations on Highways as a supporting infra for their NEXON EV’s. This way people don’t have to charge their batteries, they just have to get to a station and the discharged battery will be replaced by a charged battery within 5 mins and the customers can be on their way. Also the charging stations also show up in the integrated MAP on the infotainment system, also the battery is positioned In a place (under the hood) where it’s easily accessible (unlike a TESLA where it’s under the passenger seats). So this impediment has been given a lot of thought and the solution has been integrated with the very design of the product. Your videos are absolutely fantastic!

Another big question is when this battery dies (say after 10 years) then what will we do with current version of battery available, can we recycle them. If not then will it be another problem like plastics we are facing today

Good point Rohan. 1. Regarding recycling : There are several companies coming up who can recycle the battery. A Pioneer one is Lohum. Lohum itself is manufacturer of batteries and also recycles them. Good news is they are setting a New plant and have aggressive timelines to achieve their goal. 2. Regarding Charging points: Tata has partnered with HP for electrification. More details are yet to be out. Additionally, Many Highway Restaurants and Petrol pumps can create a Charging station with certain updates. Overall as explained in video, the EV revolution has started and India will be one of the leaders in upcoming 10 years.

Since electricity would be replacing petrol and diesel as a driving force for EV, the electricity production is a factor which India needs to look upon. And with electricity production I mean to say that through renewable sources of energy because using conventional method which have adverse effect on the environment doesn't makes sense. Also, we are still much behind in electricity production from renewable sources when compared to other developing/developed nations. What I feel that hybrid electric is better for our country at present and gradually moving to fully electric while we switch towards more and more renewable methods of electricity production.

The only problem I see that is keeping the customers from buying EV is the charging time of EV Imagine running out of energy in the middle of the journey it would take hours to charge

The biggest way to penetrate EV market is by launching EV 2-wheelers which Ola has accurately identified. Now there should be good financing options available for the customers to make the switch. Also, the EV industry needs to pitch their products as aspirational yet achievable rather than drilling down on the "environmental friendly" aspect!

Very informative story. Amazing work However I suggest to have a balance outlook by highlighting the risks of EV sector. Also for cost comparison, it's better to take realistic electricity charges of 8.57 per unit (between 301-500 units)

I agree with everything you said about EV's, their infrastructure, charging, etc. But the point where you said it's gonna take place in the next 3-4 years, I don't think that's possible. For instance, PayPal launched in the US in the year 2000 whereas Paytm was founded in 2010. EV markets are growing and that too at a very fast pace, but even countries like US, UK etc. haven't been fully able to switch to EV's. I think it will take India at least 5-10 years to reach the targets you discussed in this video.

@Karan Bhaskar Yes US is not going to change to EV's much speedily as we think because crude oil is being trading in US dollar's they still get benefit from it a lot.if US changed that fastly many other countries will also may do it.so before they are going to apply ev's they will find any other way to overcome the losses due to crude oil transactions.

Most of the cost of manufacturing an EV goes to battery. Therefore battery manufacturers are the best investment opportunity. To run the whole world in electricity we will need large amount of energy which will not be provided by non-renewable energy sources. Hence, renewable energy companies are very important. As you pointed out Li mining companies are also important. Great episode, can't thank you enough for the knowledge and thinking power you give me in every video.

Nice way of putting it... such incentives and schemes have been put forward many times in the past... inability of the government to understand the market and the systemic corruption will wipe out any positive effect of such things...and GST for EVs should be brought to 0 rather than 5% if they really mean businesses

Hi Think school Very insightful video Just thinking whether the power which is generated in India can support all the EVs? We may run out of coal, hydro is dependent on other factors like rains and water requirements, renewable sources of energy are not that efficient at the moment? Would like to hear about your thoughts on how can these limitations be handled with some facts about production, consumption, future requirements and so on Would be great to watch both these together

In Kolkata, for domestic consumption, the slab rate is as follows: Rs 4.89 per unit for the first 25 units, Rs 5.4 per unit for the next 35 units, Rs. 6.41 per unit for the next 40 units, Rs 7.16 per unit for the next 50 units, Rs 7.33 per unit for the next 150 units and Rs 8.92 per unit for anything above 300 units. Now Calculte cost of running your EV at highest slab ! Cheap and clean electricity is also a pre-requisite !
