Our Mantras prefer bright filtered light. If they do not get enough light the leaves get a faded look to them. Most of our Mantras sit about four feet from a southern exposure window and about the same distance from some shelves that have grow lights on for 12 hours a day. They seem to thrive there always putting out beautiful new leaves. What they do not want is any kind of direct light. If you have a window that gets direct light you can filter that light with a curtain. How thin or thick the curtain is would depend on the intensity of the light. We never use tap water on them. They do not tolerate chlorine or fluoride or hard water (water having a lot of minerals in it). We use a bottled water that has been purified with reverse osmosis. Some people swear by distilled water. When using distilled water a fertilizer must be used on a regular basis (according to directions). Organic fertilizer usually works best for tropical plants. We use worm castings for that reason and the Mantras seem to do very well with it. Not having enough light and using the wrong type of water are the quickest ways to get crispy leaves and leaves that do not develop properly.

Hello! I'm not new to maranta but new to VARIEGATED maranta! I just got one and am so excited. Do you think that the variegated one specifically could use more bright, indirect light to bring out the variegation more? Or do you have any other tips on getting it to have more variegated leaves? Thanks :)

Thank you! This was a really useful video. I found that my normal maranta (non-variegated) flowered for only a few days (white flowers). Is it better to bottom or top water them?

Thanks so much Monica! I personally take all my plants to the sink and top water thoroughly and let all the water run through 😊

In their natural habitat they are all low lying forest crawlers so grow horizontally, yes 😊
