5:07 If you have the mercy kill skill from naturalist role you can do that and the pelt will not be ruined. This can also be used if your hunting bison with poison throwing knife.

the Trifecta of hunting (sans Legendary animals) is Springfield and Varmint rifles and the Bow (Either one but the Improved bow has better range). Bow hunting in particular can be very lucrative, simply because If you get a one shot kill by popping them in the head or neck: you get your arrow back. so you can hunt for as long as you want and get as many kills as you want so long as you're careful with your shots rule of thumb is if its big or bitey you pop it with the Springfield, things like Elk, moose, bears, Bison, wolves, cougars or Panthers, if its small and flighty you pop it with a Varmint rifle, rabbits, racoons, turkeys and some types of birds, everything else is the bow or If you feel fighty and got something to prove you can chase shit down with a lasso and Stab it to death and as weird as it will sound, try to get Naturalist to at least five to get the Mercy Kill ability, so you don't have to wait for something to die if you critically wound it, but for some reason it doesn't work on things like Bears. another thing is getting a really tall horse, I know it sounds like a weird tip, but they're essentially a Mobile sniper perch and when chasing down something like a Bison or a buck it makes it a bit easier of an Angle to get them in their heads, my main hunting horse is my grey Shire Frost and my Thoroghbreds, my black chestnut named Inky and dapple gray called Snow, Kladrubers and Hungarian Half-bred are pretty close. and Ironically the Gypse cob you get for naturalist is also a really good hunting horse.

Little Creek River in Big Valley is my favorite place to camp and hunt, for all the reasons you mentioned. Every so often a Moose spawns in one specific spot in the middle of the field in front of Hanging Dog Ranch. Also, another nice thing about hunting is Great Plains are the numerous bison in that area. It's pretty easy to pick off a few of them in a herd at once, though this is an instance where the trader wagon does come in handy since you can't lasso and drag pelts.

I just wish the elephant gun didn't ruin all pelts. it would make sense to use it on dangerous game like Grizzly Bears, Bison, Moose and cougars a still get perfect pelts with a well placed shot. That's what a double rifle was created for.

Horses stolen from NPC's cannot be fed and loose stamina lot quicker. If you have a wild horse spawn close by, you can "tame" wild horse, brush it and feed it once and then riseit hunting and whistling at your main horse. Every time you give carcases to Crips, hitch the wild horse to the ground, this way you can quiclky use it again. Very efficient method if you haven't got the hunting wagon.

Yeah I used to have two wild horses at the same time with pelts. Riding one and guiding the one behind me with my lasso. Until they removed the ability to do so, now the pelt just falls off the second wild horse. I guess it's because Rockstar wants more incentive for us to buy the shaggin' wagon. Now on characters I don't have the wagon on and even on character with it full I usually steal an NPC's wagon and get it close to a rock or hill and put multiple pelts/carcasses in it.

Here’s my level 20 method I’ve done for newer player You will need a rifle preferably with a scope Go to Great Plains and on the map in the area of “ins” on the word Great Plains is a Bison spawn point. Kill a 3 star bison with a head shot. Skin it put it on your horse, then kill as many proghorn, white tails, grey foxes as you see and skin them and stow them. When your horse is filled with pelts and the bison pelt find a 3 star large animal, kill it, then lasso it back to your camp You will fill your bar for materials to about half with this method

For grizzlies you can also use a shotgun with "bullets"(idk what they are called in English but not the regular amo, the one between incendiary and explosive) and do headshots, it will not ruin the pelt

Good to know poison arrows are actually effective. Used them a lot in story mode and easily took out legendary animals in one shot. Was wondering why this didn't work in Online and it may be because I wasn't going for headshots. I believe it doesn't matter where you land the arrow in story mode.

Best way to hunt for fun is without aim assist or a weapon reticle, also without a scope. Its fun to need to aim in on your enemy with iron sights and firing a shot, for this youll need to be off of your horse. Its the most fun for animals very far away and you want to test your aim

At the risk of sounding overly pedantic, it should be noted that some medium animals have to go on the back of the horse, not on the side of the saddle, like foxes and coyotes. Also, you can mercy kill a wounded animal once you reach level 6 Naturalist, which does not degrade the carcass.

In regards to Rifles: Express rounds will one shot bears including grizzlies in the head without ruining pelt, including the Bolt Action Rifle. Regular rounds wont but will clean kill deer and doe, not bull elk however you need express for that. All headshots though. High Velocity also work if you dont have express. you made a mistake, you forgot moderate sized animals. Bigger than small but smaller than medium. Only kllable with varmint rifle and nothing else. Rabbit, armadillo, badger etc

cat you forgot the BEST of the BEST location, the bayou, why? if you're ONLY looking to fill up cripps, there's ALOT of aligators ususally 2 and 3 stars, and they are easy to hunt. another tip is you kills multiple animals on the same spot. WHEN you kill like 5-6-7 animals DO NOT pick them up, if you pick them up they despawn, take them to your camp nearby, stack them up, and you can donate multiple animals. my camp is in the bayou and i kill all the aligators nearby usually its 10 and i fill my cripps from 0-100 in less them 10 min. not to mention theres ALOT of birds around.

When you are donating something it should tell you that value that its worth. Carcasses are worth more. There are also google spreadsheets you can find online that have a compilation of all the animals and the value of their body parts.

If you're interested in working those two roles specifically, I'd recommend camping in either the Little Creek River area of Big Valley, or Bluewater Marsh near Lagras. Harriet has locations in both of those areas and both are great for hunting.

thank you for continuing to educate about this beautiful game. 20 years ago, i played RDR1, i beat mcfarlanes ranch, armadillo, and mexico. but i never finished new yorks great planes uh, black water. recently i downloaded rdr1 again on my nintendo switch. i just got back to black water. im highly looking forward to completeing the bes tgame ive ever played, undead nightmare. and then the lesser story - major graphical rdr2. rdr2 season 1 pvp was a god damn masterpiece. it took a while to learn but. once learned. season 1 and 2 were the best pvp i;ve ever had in my life. and i come from everquest 1 pvp, eq2 pvp, world of warcraft pvp. once you learned rdr2 online pvp season 1 - 2 , it was wonderful fun times. Russian Tersk horse. best horse since 2010.
