I got C. Foreli and am hyped about the future. They just have 500ish workers but those are a bit bigger and they dont need winterpause /but slow down a bit... which is ideal in many ways :) So far she got 4 workers and 10~12ish eggs. They took honey and a few small crickets so far so~ I think its a good start! I hope I dont screw this up... ^^"

Awesome job ! Thank you for filming this with the timeline format. I'm hoping to gather several queens this summer and it is helpful to see the timeline. It would really be cool if you continued the timeline as a series, showing when you move the stronger colonies out of their test tube setups. What temperature did you hibernate your camponotus ?
@nathant7437 Жыл бұрын
GJ man. I just very recently got into the hobby. Saw some at an EXPO and bought one CA02 Queen. Did some research and this is what I learned: When making the test tube setup, sterilize everything, gloves if possible or wash your hands and use bottled water. It'll help a lot with the molding. The water should be over half way, a longer test tube is preferred. You want more space for the queen so she can regulate how far away she wants to place the eggs from the water source. Use water, never sugar water to fill it. These ants LOVE heat so 85F and everything speeds up. The hibernation seems to only be for some carpenter ants, some don't do it. I think my CA02 won't be hibernating. So after you notice the ants pulling on the cotton to get out, that's when you feed them as that's a sign they wanna go out and look for food. So you should feed them when you see about 6-10 ants and pulling in the cotton. You can then take the test tube and put it into a bigger enclosure as an outworld, but be sure that when u take the cotton out to let them out, you don't take it all out as they don't like the entrance to be completely open, it'll bother them greatly. Just enough so the workers can leave to fetch food. The founding stage you can try not to disturb the queen as much as possible but after she gains several workers, she gains a lot more confidence and you can take her out, leave her somewhere dim and warm. You move them to a formicarium when they get 20-50 workers, the more the better. You wait that long to increase the chance of success as too few workers might lead to issues or even failing. You also want to create a gradient in heat AND humidity, don't let it all be 85F or all humid AF. They seem to like it dry as well.

Sounds like you're overcomplicating it... just fill a test tube halfway with bottled water, stick a cotton piece down (make sure its fully saturated), put the queen in, and block the entrance with cotton. From this point, all you really need to do during founding (with fully claustral and heat loving queens) is provide heating at the far end of the tube. Put in a dark, vibration safe place with some ventilation (so heat wont build up and cause condensation inside the tube). Check biweekly and when first workers eclose, feed sugars and protein immediately. After that, just feed every 4ish days until they are too big for the test tube. Then you're good to go.

I recommend stateside ants as a site to buy ants from, tip finding camp. Queens: after heavy rain find wet logs, break off pieces of the wood/ bark and sure enough you’ll find a queen.

4:25 mine came in plastic and i swapped her to glass right away. Plastic - i think thats just less hygenic surface........ Also you can add *tesa flaps for anti roll* i mean really its not that special a "feature". Smart but not hard to replicate at all.

Mine are just there. The first three. A queen, a good sized super major, and a regular ant worker. I left out a piece of chicken, a protein jelly, a bowl of honey, and a plate of seeds. I don’t have any canned cooked insects for them yet sadly. I’ll try to not turn on the lights so much, while they’re adjusting to the outworld while being inside their test tube with the brood and babies. 🤷

My queens died partly through hibernation :/ I stressed them way too much and I noticed my mistakes, I will say to NEVER EVER stick ANYTHING anywhere near a queen in her founding stage this being anything like qtips, even if you need to get something from behind her just LEAVE IT. It’s so bad for them you can do it and literally watch them pass..Heart wrenching but hopefully I can establish my first and number 1 colony this spring

Question:::::: Starting test tube set ups are for when the queen is new and she is full on wing muscle to feed her young. I got 3 queens now in December all their brood have failed. I could use a guide on how to keep them alive feeding and needs to help her get to spring so she will restart laying and try to build brood pile again. This is a Huge challenge for a novice ant keeper. I see zero guides on this subject just how to keep new queens. Well what about the ones that are not new but still in the box so to speak. How to care for them to get to year 2 and a real founding? This is my question as i hope my queens do not die before spring

Why don't you give the ants an outworld instead of feeding them in the test tube. It less stressful and easier to feed them
