Curtis, you said that 13. Meg Ohm is enough to trip a breaker. Could you explain that, please? In my world 240 vac across 13. Meg Ohm results in a current of 18.46 microampers. Even a GFCI leakage current doesn't trip until it sees 4. - 6. Milliampers. I have heard you state this before. The customers have 40 Amp breakers so I can't figure out why you said that.

Exactly. Sadly, Curtis needs more training while using a meter to check electrical resistance to ground.
@v12mike30

For there to be any leakage to ground, the insulation inside the compressor must be compromised, either by burning or rubbing with vibration. Once that happens, the wire will start arcing across when high voltage is applied ((perhaps only when the compressor is vibrating), and it is the arcing that trips the breaker.
@mediadaemon
@mediadaemon 7 ай бұрын
I too was curious on that. I really think its a capacitor failure and not grounded compressor. He even said 40 meg ohm when on the comp itself

You’ve got to understand I’m checking with a 9V battery. If you apply 240V under load the results are much different. When I use my megger anything below 20 Mohms is labeled as bad, and I’m not using the megger. Unfortunately the ohms law doesn’t make much sense when applying it in this case.

Temporary room A/C is all you can do for them if they are interested...Sad but its that time of year when contractors are super busy. The mobile home set up looks rather deteriorated...I'd install two returns if possible as those are noisy and rather inefficient with just the one at the blower. What a job those mobile homes are.

The first you said was a 5T (on a trailer? Hmmm...) How big was the one you'll actually get to replace? That can't be cheap, especially as you'll probably need all-new refrigerant since you can't trust what it had. Does the warranty cover that too? Hope so...

Sounds like you have a flooded evaporator so no I would not say compression issue but would need to know a little more information like metering device, air flow CFM's because it could be a air flow issue motor spinning to slow, TXV feeding issue or possible over charge would need to know evap TD condenser TD superheat for fixed orifice or subcooling for TXV so no way to know with the little information you provided. The only way you can say it is a compression issue is by calculating CFM and being completely sure it is correct then completing a compression ratio test but if air flow is not correct the compression ratio will be squed

if the oil goes acidic from absorbing moisture, that could kill the windings - corrosion and short out.
@dmiestercommkitchentech3043
@dmiestercommkitchentech3043 7 ай бұрын
Exposed wire inside compressor which is a short due to the oil electricity flows thru the oil and causes current which inturn causes the short to get worse until it burns out the oil which pretty much burn the lubricant from the oil and a tech allowing it to continue to run in this condition until the complete system is contaminated by burnt sludge called acidic oil. Basically there are several factors that can cause a compressor to short out.

Out where I live mobile homes are not as thrifty as they used to be. Space rent around here is averaging about $1,200 to $1,500 a month in addition to the utilities and cost of the home. $8,000 or so doesn't make a lot of sense to put into an old mobile home for 3 months of air conditioning. Everything these days is so far from reasonable priced when its related to income levels.

Curtis, I have 37 years of experience in HVAC, and 32 years as an industrial electrician. I do not want to make you look bad in any way, but you need to be educated on electrical motors and resistance values to make them bad. When reading to ground from any winding on a compressor, any value higher than 1 megohm isn't a problem. You are replacing compressors when they don't need replacement. Sorry, for the negative comment, but this is simply the truth. I'm sure that your followers will have a problem with this, but they simply don't have my background. If any comment negatively, I will simply unsubscribe and go my way. That

There’s a reason for the difference. I’m testing with a 9V battery. Under load it’s much different. Even my megger doesn’t go below 20 Mohms, because anything less is considered bad. It’s just different under load.

Then dude you need to hit the books again because if there is any reading to ground from a compressor terminal it means that the wire from that terminal inside the compressor to the motor winding has compromised insulation and it will cause more damage to the system if the compressor is not replaced; when you are reading resistance from ground to the terminal it is thru the oil in the compressor which means the oil is getting electrically fried which is how burn outs are caused. Ie...acid contaminated systems. No where is there a reading to ground on a compressor terminal that is acceptable it is a issue that if left to continue will get worse. So no the compressor did not need to be replaced immediately but it would need to be replaced sometime in the future which means there is no way to say how long it would continue to run if it died with in a month or so then Curtis would have been held responsible because he was the last tech to touch it. So Curt CYA I'd do the same thing and do I have 30yrs experience in commercial refrigeration and HVAC so you do you Curtis.
@dmiestercommkitchentech3043
@dmiestercommkitchentech3043 7 ай бұрын
@@Jon-hx7peyes It should read infinite resistance if there is no problem but since he is reading resistance he is reading it thru the compressor oil. Now if it was a scroll Copeland had a service bulletin to warm the compressor up using the crankcase heater because they had a issue with the insulation of the motor windings having exposed wires in the compressor and heating the crankcase up allowed the oil to heat up and become a vapor which prevented the wires electrical current from flowing to ground and if it was not heated up then the breaker would trip this was mainly on start ups of new equipment not on equipment that has been running for any amount of time. The only reason the service flash was produced was because Copeland had way too many compressor failures that caused them to investigate the cause and since there was resistance to ground they had to honor every replaced compressor underwarranty they have since corrected the exposed wiring issue inside of scroll compressors. But they still said that the compressor replacements were warranted because of the resistance to ground period. The resistances were meggaohms which is why they recommended not using a meggar to check compressor windings to ground.
