When I was growing up I loved John Candy. He made a movie in the 80s called “Summer Rental” and my uncle and cousins bumped into Mr Candy while they were on vacation. I don’t remember their impression of him but I’ll never forget the photographs they shared, smiling and eating lunch with him on the beach. He really seemed to have the biggest heart, and I’ve always been grateful to hear that he really was as warm and generous as he seemed.

I loved "Summer Rental" , especially the way John played off of a fellow pro like Richard Crenna. They both combined great acting and comedy to make that movie stand out when most of the 89's were just slob comedies. With no entertainment values at all.

@@calisongbird , as a young neurodivergent child (definitely ADHD, maybe autism), I craved attention from other people but didn't always know the best way to get it. I went through a phase of casually taking objects from people while talking to them. If they were holding something (e.g., paper, phone, water bottle), I would slowly take it from them and hold it, ideally without breaking the conversation. That didn't really work. Esoteric animal trivia was also not well received. I'm not saying that Tom Hanks' rapper son is neurodivergent or disabled like me, but it does seem like the privileges he has enjoyed from his dad (e.g., fame, wealth, world travel) have sheltered him to the point that he is out of touch with reality. He desperately wants attention but has no idea what is entertaining to the average person. The fake Jamaican accent and bad rapping are his version of taking a water bottle out of someone's hand or sharing too many weird animal facts.

American here, I always assumed Candy was just an abbreviated form of Canada or Canadian! I was vaguely aware that the award was called a Candy, it never occurred to me that it would be "named" after John Candy, as well it should be! A national treasure. Canada never ceases to amaze 🇺🇸 ❤️ 🇨🇦

At my lowest I decided to fight back. And just when I was losing hope I saw your Dartmouth speech where you eloquently said it's our failures that shape us. That was what kept me going and I won in the end, got my dream job and life. And damn proud of my failures. I wanted to thank you. I have already voted for you for the peoples choice awards. I am a huge SCTV fan from back in the day being a Canadian. One thing Conan left out was that Candy was playing his character Johnny La Rue who was playing Yellowbelly. There are a handful of celebrity deaths that I and quite a lot of people felt more viscerally than most. I think for the fondness we collectively experienced from their work, the struggles they endured and hearing that they were indeed good people. John Candy is in that echelon. For me it also includes Christopher Reeve, John Ritter, and Robin Williams.

I hope that some of Martin Shorts audio tapes are included in the documentary. A treasure trove of the parties held by the cast of SCTV and The Second City (Toronto). The parties were called The Services. I think that was the name. Often, when driving to downtown Toronto for work, I would see JC at his house on Avenue Road (look it up, yes it is the name of the street) on the front veranda with his feet up on the railing and smoking a cigar. The doc will be a must watch. Martin Scorsese is making a doc on SCTV. Amazing.

"You don't try comedy: you do it because you have to." Reminds me of Fern Brady, a Scottish comedian who was recently diagnosed as autistic and has fully incorporated it into her newest act (Autistic Bikini Queen). She says she could not do any other job. Other jobs aren't accessible to her / won't accommodate her. I bet that a lot of comedians are neurodivergent. Tons have anxiety and are open about it. A few have diagnosed ADHD, but I bet many, many more have it and are undiagnosed. It makes me happy as an ND person. I struggled to succeed in work and life (and balancing both) when I was younger because I chose a formal career path. Not something flexible and entertaining like comedy. I hope autistic kids and ADHDers and anxious kids today know that they have options in creative fields, even if they "fail" in traditional education and work.

SCTV's skit, The Recess Monkeys with Candy, Rick Moranis and Eugene Levy is a classic that John is awesome in. Or any of his Dr. Tongues House of Beef skits.

Great interview Conan. John Candy was one of a kind, very talented funny guy. I think he was the best comedic actor that came out of his generation other than Robin Williams. Colin Hanks was great in that excellent series The Offer. Godfather producer Al Ruddy's story was really interesting. This is great to see Colin is producing a John Candy doc.

You know what? This video has finally convinced me to rectify one of the great failings in my life. This year, I’m finally going to watch Planes Trains and Automobiles.

I was 15 when John Candy died, and the announcement came on TV just as my dad was calling me into the kitchen. I knew that I was in trouble, so desperately tried to divert his attention by telling him, “Dad! John Candy just died!” It did not work.

Can I have a day in a half with Conan? Feel like he is who he appears as on TV, maybe some slight differences, but nothing that would ruin my love for his humor and wit.

Tom Hanks brought his son to see my Shakespeare company years ago and was really lovely. I don't think it was this son though. He was about ten and they were shooting Private Ryan at the time. Tom Hanks was exactly as I'd hoped he would be also. As was his wife, who is a great actress.
