And while that was kinda flattering I also thought about why it would be weird. I know tons of people in Germany who are positively hilarious, it's just certain forms of humor don't appeal to Germans, specifically there seems to be a large number of interactions where you're just *supposed* to laugh whether it was funny or not based on the speaker's demeanor. Germans however don't subscribe to such niceties. If it's not funny we don't laugh.

I'm from germany, and yes, irony and sarcasm is really, really hard to translate (thats why i watch a lot of those movies in english). Deadpool for example was really hard i can imagine. They even changed some lines COMPLETELY because it wouldnt have made sense to just translate them. Its not an issue just with germany, it goes through every translation, where it has to be lipsync or its some reference to something else (which people might not know in another country, like some celebrities). But at least with Deadpool they really tried, Free Guy too, though it was not THAT impressive translated. On the plus side, germany is really good at dubbing movies, compared to the US. I watched some european netflix shows in german dubbing and english dubbing. The english version ALWAYS sounds like a german b-movie from the 80s. Or some crappy Videogame-Voiceover from the early 2000s, while in german you often can't even tell it's dubbed. his impression of the German reaction is hysterical - especially that very reserved, quizzical head tilt. I have been living in Munich for the last 13 years and...how can I put this delicately? Germans can come off as a bit autistic - for lack of a better word - taking things very literally at times, especially around humor. "Humorous" sarcasm is not their forte, at all. I think they find it more mean spirited than anything, hence not really funny, which I have to concede is reasonable and not inaccurate. But they DO have a great sense of humor, and very much enjoy a good laugh. Usually an expression of personal suffering (not serious suffering but a sort of "oh why meeeee!!!!" tone around something inherently not important) will get them giggling. I remember one time I got to work late, and explained to my most straight faced, serious coworker that I was held up as my cat peed in my purse and he was simply howling over that one, clutching his sides, tears flowing, gasping for breath. It was truly great :D They also like word play. I explained the concept of "hangry" and that inspired great amusement. The concept of playing "hot potato" with unpleasant tasks that no one wants to do also cracked them up. There is something a bit innocent or child-like about everyday humor with them - I like it.

So maybe you shouldn't make jokes about it and start to learn at least your first foreign language. And only when you have the level to understand irony then and only then you have the right to feel superior.....

Im bilingual and speak fluent German and English and I can say making jokes and being funny in German is soooo much funnier than English. Especially if you’re from more country areas in Germany
@becominghero97542 жыл бұрын
It's always going to be funnier in whichever is your first language. I am fluent in Spanish and jokes kind of just make me sad because they make me realize, right up until the joke happens, that I am not actually "one of them." I might laugh, but it's not the same. And man German was my second language but I can't understand a joke for shiiit in German. So it's just whichever you have the most connection with.

I am an American and I never met one single German who would have taken his sentences seriously. I don’t know what interviewers he met but normally Germans understand sarcasm and irony very well. From my experience they are way more sarcastic than we are and have great humor. I realized that it’s actually the Americans who often don’t really get jokes.
@PlayMyDarling3 жыл бұрын
These shows are always exaggerating and the stories they tell are sometimes not even completely true, so no need to explain anything. A good (or rather bad...) cultural cliché always works, so they go with that in these shows.

This was something I was thinking about other day how well dose humor translate. It doesn't always and why something like Mr Bean that's all physical comedy and no dialogue is loved world wide. Everyone gets the jokes
@kwidevidsb81273 жыл бұрын
the german guy didn't understand because his english was basic elementary. if he was proficient he would know what Ryan meant. Just before covid I was at Berlin Film Festival, and was watching a live interview where german journalist wanted to discuss the ending. He completely spoiled the fundamental twist of the movie before the world premiere. So many german journalist speak very basic english, it's tragic. Body language is pretty much universal, hence Mr Bean is so popular.

Is it just me, thinking that putting effort into a conversation results in relatable and funny humor? I'm from Germany and still was cracking jokes with some random Hungarian while playing pool in the hotel lobby when I was 14 years old and neither of us fluent in English...we had nothing in common! He was almost twice my age and we could barely understand each other. If half the people would just pull that huge stick out their behind, the world would be a better and much happier place. Thank you

I am German and I love Ryan and his humor. The thing is our film industry seriously sucks and most of the people in it take everything, but mostly themselves, way to serious. And if you are in that kind of environment also the journalists are that way. So if you want to enjoy yourself, go anywhere, but not on German film festivals. A visit of a parliament session can be more funny. Great comedians there...

As a half-german it is quite funny. Accept that they might not pick up on all jokes and move on. But please also remember that many reporters and agencies outside of the US take their jobs seriously and do not throw softballs. They are professionals at their jobs and expect you to be one at yours. Humor is nice, but will also be percieved as trying to avoid answering.
