Concrete truck rolls over. Pumping concrete with Muddyfeet

We vlog our day to day operations. Some days are better than others. Thankfully no one got hurt during this truck accident. This concrete truck got to close to the edge of the road and eventually rolled over. it is not uncommon for concrete trucks accidents. Thier loads shift easily and causes them to roll over. Mostly on the drivers side.

@@MuddyfeetConcretePumping I'm not bitching ( yes I am 😁) , I realize y'all got your equipment in there ..and probably took your time ..which is smart . But these concrete companies are crazy ! I remember back in 1985 , we were pouring a large pool deck and side patios , along with a lot of footings for brick retaining walls , columns etc . During the Pool deck and patio part ( we poured the other with on site mixers ) , the house was on a very steep hill .. and really no better access in the front .. actually , the only access WAS where we had the trucks go , to get up the hill .. like I said , a very steep grade . Long story short , the concrete company sent 8 trucks ( we actually needed only 3 9yarders for the pour ) ..but the younger drivers kept trying to race to the top of the hill , like they were in dune buggies ! I kept telling them to gradually go up , in low gear .. a little at a time . Well , the first 3 ended up messed up , the drive shafts were compromised.. An older driver finally got there and he drove the next three trucks ,one at a time ..no problems with each pour .. My point is , that makeshift driveway would send me into another realm .. I would not allow trucks to back into it , just knowing how bad some of these drivers are ..

In hindsight , I would've gotten a crane pump .. but we had a concrete contractor that poured the pool deck .. he didn't want to pay the extra money . I realize that construction can get out of hand , when inexperienced people are involved .. thank God for the old timers ! 👍

This is why all redi mix (concrete) companies should have their own site rep. That site would have gotten shut down when that 1st truck sank in. At 3:56 you can see a "push" where the weight of the 1st truck moved the whole road base over. And again at 4:04 and 4:09 , non of our site reps would have let the 2nd truck come in after the 1st sank that much on what is clearly a poorly compacted road base. That's something like 65-70,000 pounds!!! that road was made to hold 1/3 that weight CLEARLY!

The road is garbage. Yes the driver is off track a bit but the road is garbage. Period. You can see where he was backing on someone else's track, the shit is soft and kept sucking him over to the edge. Look over on the other side, there's ruts near the edge there too, collapsing off the edge. You back down that with 8-10 yards you have to hit it perfect and be a bit lucky. The bottom line is the driver stopped as soon as he knew he was off track and getting sucked over....but the truck still rolled over. BAD ROAD. (yeah watch the first minutes where you can see the guy backing in...he's pretty centered, he gets sucked over.)

Driver stop your drum from turning and that will stabilize the load. With your drum turning the load is continuing to climb the left side of the drum. That's causing the center of gravity to shift even further to the left side of the truck.

They said they were afraid to spin to unload, I assume that's the other direction, but that would have loaded the uphill side which seems helpful. I agree it looks like the way it was turning would weight the downhill side. Too bad they didn't ask us.

I drive a concrete in Corpus. Have for about ten years now. He should have discharged the load. With the drum spinning in the "charge" mode, the fins have the concrete high on above the drivers left shoulder. Also the spinning drum has something called "transitional torque" on the trucks frame wanting to tip the truck in the same direction. Think of it like shooting a gun. It has an equal an opposite reaction (the bullet goes one way and the gun is forced the other). As the drum forces the 40,000 pounds of concrete in one direction, where the drum mounts to the frame, it torques the frame in the other direction. Thats why mixer trucks can take left hand curves at higher speeds that they can right curves. By reversing his drum, it shifts the torque forcing the right wheels down and also shifts the concretes weight from high left to high right which also helps hold that side down. As the concrete discharges it lessens the total weight on the truck which also helps. Sometimes it's better to lose the load, rather than loose the truck. The driver mentioned being afraid to reverse the drum, that is simply not knowing how your truck operates. All that said, that entrance was not very well built by the contractor to support that much weight. Plus the driver should have had a spotter and been backing slower. It was possibly recoverable at the start, but it's better not to get your truck into that situation in the first place.

This is entirely the fault of the General Contractor. That road was going to fail with the mixer rolling over no matter what. The only fault you can put on the redi mix supplier is they should have refused concrete delivery until that road was dramatically improved.

You can clearly see the driver did not stay on the tire tracks and started moving left while he was turning his work lights on. I’ve backed my mixer many times over worse roads than that. Lean to left = stop your drum and put in discharge just enough to get that mud onto the right side.

Urgency? The truck is insured, the load is insured, the job is probably insured. Nothing there worth rushing for and risking a life altering decision being made in the haste. Once things go wrong and all bodies are clear, it's best to understand that the truck, or plane, or whatever it is belongs to the insurance company now.

Hell that things wider than my last driveway before I moved. Now imagine driving a big truck with a 26 foot box on the back of it down that driveway and theres a sharp 90 in the drive and 18 inches or so off the drive theres a fence with a shallow ditch against the driveway. Oh and on the opposite side of the turn there's trees right against the edge of the drive. Anyone think they could make that turn? I know I can because I have. Had to deliver a load of brand new furniture there. I will say this though I had 2 people watching my corners for me. And I do know I do not want to do that one again.

The driver really did everything he could to roll that over .. didn't walk the road before backing in, then got as close to one side of the road as possible, and all the time kept hes drum rolling.. If the wrecker moved as fast as he did when it went over .. he might of saved it .

No kidding, you’ve got a pump truck sitting there on the clock plus 8-10 labors and concrete finishers just standing around on the clock. When you do start pouring concrete that day you’ll probably run into a bunch of overtime because of the delay, who’s paying for that? If you don’t pour it that day those laborers and finishers lose a day of pay. So they lose out because of a driver who can’t back a truck up straight. Seems like the concrete company should eat any extra costs because their driver caused the delay.

@@artmont9043 he could have but the weight of the truck plus the concrete would have pulled those trees out of the ground like you would pull a stick out of mud. Trying to offload would be a good idea except that just the motion change of the concrete would have made the truck go over as well. This was pretty much a case of it's going over no matter what you do. It's not a matter of if it's a matter of when it's going over. Feel bad for the driver of that truck. And I know the tow truck driver was sick when it went.

Jeffrey Murdock and that’s very true but it would also have bought some time. You would be surprised just how much by doubling/snatche blocking to some trees/anchor weight it will hold. Plus running low line and top lines would have bought a whole lot of time. I was a medium wrecker driver but also assisted heavys in this situation I believe it could have been saved. Nevertheless glad the driver wasn’t hurt and concrete co. Getting a hearty bill. Win win situation

I work with concrete trucks all the time and have been doing so for years (I'm a testing technician, among other things), and I was just about to say you had it backward, but then I looked closely at the video to see the rotation direction, and you are correct. All the concrete trucks I work with around here discharge when the drum spins clockwise as seen from the output end, and this one is set up backwards from that. Spinning the drum counter-clockwise in this case would have shifted the weight dramatically to the right, so I agree with you completely. That means that when the guys at the site were talking about not wanting to discharge for fear of shifting the weight to the truck's left weren't thinking straight. They almost certainly could have saved the day by quickly getting it unloaded.

Dang! We had an issue of a bridge collapsing while the mud truck was on it. Our guy was backing him in and they tried to pin it on us! The contractor ended up ended up doing the right thing due to the fact he built the bridge. You did the right thing and not pumping, brother! Y'all keep at it!

My first thought was to go around the base of that tree or the largest tree in close proximity with a tow strap. I'm no tow pro but I am a mixer driver. Anything might have worked better than what the wrecker driver did. At least there would have been some support from the passenger side.

Dude, totally right. I mean, how is it that a heavy wrecker operator is sent out with all that recovery gear yet not the know how. Common sense tells you, if your goal is to recover the truck WITHOUT allowing it to tip over, and its currently still advancing on tipping over, the first thing you do is stop it from tipping and most effective method would seem to be securing the top in the opposite direction of its roll. Oh look, is that a tree right there? Or get the wrecker out that way and pull out 100' of cable. For a second there i thought he was gonna just try and hold the truck from tipping by sitting on it. 😳

That narrow road is a hazard to truck pumper and drum concrete trucks, you should have at least 5feet per side, taking to account that's a fill dirt road, and is not well compacted as seeing on video, just stay safe guys our family is always speccting to see as walk through the door every day we go out.

Now that's what I call one heck of a day. In trucking anything can and will happen, the list is endless and never ending. I just retired from driving a mixer truck for 20+ yr's. Once I walked that access road and saw how unsafe it was, would I have backed up it ? No way. Glad nobody was hurt. Safety first.

I've seen equipment roll over, even lost a friend on a dozer roll over. I've pounded a lot of pump hoses with hammers to free clogs too. I've seen a lot of stuff in over 40 years of construction, but I don't think I've ever seen a cement truck go over. It's a blessing no one was hurt. But that site is sweet with a beautiful view. In the end the owner will be a happy man I'm sure. Even though this day is going to be a expensive for all.

I did a few jobs back the day that I look back on and feel lucky. This guy I worked for had my brother and I in an 8 foot deep trench following behind a concrete truck pouring a trench footing. His idea of safety was staying behind the truck in case it rolled. Never mind no shoring. Lucky we didn’t get buried.

That road and that situation, I would've discharged my truck right there and let someone else clean up the mess. Hell of a lot cheaper to get someone in with a skid steer and dump truck to move the dumped mud than paying all those wreckers and the insurance excess on the total loss truck. Discharging would've shifted the concrete in the drum to the uphill side and made the truck lighter and with a lower centre of gravity every second it was discharging. I would've also shut the engine down once it was clear it was going over- that truck is a total loss now the engine is seized and possibly has a burnt up hydraulic pump. That driveway is a joke, it clearly wasn't placed and rolled in lifts, makes me wonder what the building pad is like....I think you were lucky you didn't lose your pumper on that driveway.

Him trying to discharge would’ve rolled her over sooner. That driveway was trash as most driveways and construction entrances are for mixers.

I wouldn't have waited for wrecker. I would have ran cable through woods hooked 2 or 3 mixers together. Held truck then unloaded it. Mud is mixed in drum on left side then reverse to right side to unload. Then pull it out. That was lousy road to be backing down in the dark. Company should have told owner to fix road or piss off before they went in. I use to run a mixer 40 years ago and own a bunch of dump trucks and equipment now. I turn down many loads that are risky. Good drivers won't have trouble but everyone is not good at backing in.

@@garyevans718 Common Gary. Who are you kidding? Do you have any idea what a fully loaded mixer weighs? I don't, but I can tell you this much. they don't make a strap or chain big enough to hold a loaded mixer up from sliding off the side of that driveway. Watch closely as the foundation under the road gives way due to the shear weight of the loaded mixer. Attaching anything from the tow truck to that mixer would have more than doubled the catastrophe. You seen that not only the tow operator but so did others have to run to get out of the way once the mixer started to fall over.

After watching this video a few times over, i really think that this situation should never have come up. Firstly, the road should have been inspected and the contractor been made to widen an grade to a better, more suitable finish for heavy vehicles to access. Secondly, these concrete wagons should have been nose in, nose out, not tail in, nose out. Theres plenty of turning room and staging area. Thirdly, the wrecker that got on scene first only needed to cut the engine to stop vibration,( vibration is a bad deal on unstable ground) and stabilise the mixer by keeping the center of gravity in a more upright position. By keeping the truck upright, hes only holding the center of gravity not the entire truck. He had plenty of truck for this purpose to buy time for the larger wrecker to further stabilise the mud wagon. It is great to watch these videos vback and learn. Nobody was hurt,which is the main thing. Love the videos. Keep pumping. Cheers

Mattywho that trucks fate was sealed once the wheels stopped turning for guys to say the tree would hold is speculation. The truck was to unstable to be climbing on. The biggest take away from this is no one got hurt. Any effort to be a hero would up the risk of injury or death.

There's really no "vibration" from a slowly-turning drum. Besides, that loose soil at the roadway edge began a creeping failure right away, and nothing short of removing or lessening the applied weight was going to stop that from happening. Note that the drum was turning the wrong way, though. Reversing it (to discharge (just waste the load off the edge of the road)) would have shifted the weight substantially to the right, and lightened the truck in short order too. I agree with the rest, in principle, but I doubt there was enough time to set up anchors (like snatch blocks), even if no appraisal time had been needed (and it always is needed).

Tree just across the dirt road could have been used as an anchor to make sure the truck didn't roll. Surprised no one thought to tie off to the base of it.

I'm glad here in Michigan we don't have any rear discharge trucks. When I started doing concrete in 1997-1998 couple plants who had maybe 1 or 2 in use. Within a year or so they were not used anymore.. Their much harder to dump out than front discharge. Driver can actually see and move truck and chutes where needed. Rear trucks only good for dumping into telebelt or pump truck.

Your right the driver should’ve anchored the mix truck to one of the trees with a pulley and used the weight of both trucks to hold it until the bigger truck was on scene to assist with recovery

Set the tow truck up down the road and pull the line through the trees and pull on the side, no need to sit there and wait for the concrete to stiffen up and make the truck more unstable, also put the drum in discharge to move the mud to the high side. many mistakes added to this nightmare. A bit of concrete on the ground would be easier to clean up than the whole load and the truck in the ditch.

There is a video I watched recently where the concrete truck was tipping over on a driveway corner. The tow truck driver boss was a true expert. That video should be required viewing for all the employees of this company and this tow truck driver. He kept the truck from rolling and prevented further damage to the truck. Everyone go watch it! In a pinch like that, leave the truck already backed in full, run a chain from the drum/frame rail connection point on the tilting truck to the front tow pin on the full truck to keep tension on the rear so it can’t slide. Then hook the wrecker winch to the front tow pin on the tilted truck and winch to the other side of the road until centered. Lock in the quad locks on the tilted truck and all three trucks could walk out together. Just stop the drum, move a few feet, stop and spin to keep it wet, then repeat. That turned into an expensive wreck pretty quick. Drum full of dry concrete, most likely the engine ran with no oil pressure and needs at least bearings. Seen this way too many times.

@@trr4488 the reason I say it probably dried is because the only way to get it out is with the engine running to power the hydraulics. You tip over any truck built after 2014 and the oil comes out of the pan and into the cylinders, air to air cooler, turbo, emissions system, it covers the inside of everything. Especially when it’s still running like that on its side. The truck can be set back right side up, but you have no way of knowing if the engine is going to run away, seize, hydro lock, etc. If any one of several sensors get covered in oil, and you won’t know unless you remove them and look, the engine will go into limp mode. Then your stuck at a max rpm of idle. So you are correct about the concrete not drying in the amount of time it took for the events in the video to take place, but it’s the aftermath that keeps the drum from turning. Leading to dry concrete. I asked a concrete truck fleet manager one time why they don’t install a quick connect and ball valve on the lines going to the drum motor, so any sister truck can power the drum of any sister truck. It’s an easy install and the several $4k-$10k bills they pay every year to have concrete air hammered out of drums would pay for the installs. It’s simple math, but habit and tradition still prevail.

I was thinking the same thing. The tow driver went low he needed to find a way to pull high. I think if he was on the road up past the drive. He could have run a cable through the woods to the back top of the drum. Your right that using the other cement truck and hooking to the top of the tipping truck might have stabilized it. At least long enough until the boom wrecker arrived. I think if the cement dries that truck with the bad motor, other possible damage, and a drum full of cement might be a write off.

@@Cardi185 Yes I know that. It was a soft gravel driveway also. I only commented as to the first mixer making the driveway with no problem. If you look at the tire tracks in the soft gravel, this guy didn't slide off the edge. He backed up off to the edge of the shoulder where the loose ground cut loose due to the shear weight of the loaded mixer. This driveway looked wide enough to handle the load, if it was kept in the center of the driveway. Each & every driver has different backing up characteristics. Some are better than others. With a mixer, there is no opportunity for a mistake when backing, nor braking. It's your on top of your game, or it's a mess. I have never even considered driving a mixer, tanker, or bucket, but am qualified with my CDL. I do have 30 years as an OTR Driver with 11 on 48 foot, spread axle flat bed delivering building materials to job sites. The other 19 are 53 foot dry van, mainly hauling paper loads.

22 years in the towing industry. Was lack of training/experience on the wrecker operator's part. Leaning mixers are very common calls for service. Priority #1 is to change the center of gravity on the mixer. There are numerous ways to do this, but in this scenario a method that is called a "Tail-Wrap" would do the job. Hook high in the rear on the uphill side....low in the front on the downhill side. By pulling the high line, the rear of the mixer will slide uphill while the nose tries to go down hill. the low line in the front is to steer it out by force essentially crab walking it up and out while holding the loaded drum up at the same time. Forget about that little tree. It would need to be at least twice that size to be of any use here. That tree would not hold a loaded mixer.

Just watched a recovery video of a mixer they had to work really hard to get it upright luckily they could get two recovery trucks to it never thought about the drum separating from the chassis and it took a lot of experience to chain it up correctly for recovery

I drive mixer trucks and been in sticky situations. That’s how I ended up in this video. But before driver backed up he should have walked the area, second his back up lights were off third, he should gone slower . If I would of been in this situation I would of unloaded the truck right away and got the weight off. It’s only 1500.00. Also it would have shifted the weight to the passenger side
