My mea culpa and confessions, as a "toxic" fan, as deemed by his Royal Highness George R.R. Martin. Whose brave insight taught us to be nice to corporations and respectful to actors, writers, directors and executives that disrespect the fans. Thank you George, fandom would be so lost without your guidance, pointing out the big "meanies" that we all are. #CorporationsHaveFeelingsToo

George has grown so resentful of his fans that even if he DOES ever finish the series (he won’t) there’s no way it’s tone won’t reflect this attitude. He won’t want to impress or inspire his readers anymore, it will be more akin to the lectures on morality this fat celebrity hedonist sees fit to impart onto "his readers", we the small folk.

He really did get rich and lazy.. And hey, nothing wrong with that. You earned your $, live your dream life. Just don’t ruin your legacy by insulting the people that gave you that good life. Bring on a damn ghost writer and finish the thing IMO

@@ThePaladinJock That's a fantastic premise for a drama. The publisher is anxious to squeeze more profits out of an author's unfinished franchise. He drags his heels, so the publisher hires a ghostwriter themselves. As the writing goes on, the young idealist overcomes his fallen idol worship and tries to reignite the lost passion within the fat f-k. The new books are good; better even. The old author likes the money yet begins to resent the misplaced adulation. He doesn't want to give up the grift, and even if he did, he'd be exposed as a false author; and yet he resents the success of his ghostwriter. Arrogance which could be assuaged, and friendship found, if only he would simply be honest and get back to work. ...Also lots of gay sex and child mistreatment, probably. 😑

Thanks! Appreciate it! Obviously just getting started but hoping to get videos out on a fairly regularly basis here. Just feeling out format and length. Will probably mostly be video essay in that 7 minute-ish range with an occasional longer essay or some shorter unscripted takes. The ultimate irony with people like George, is that the people they are calling so toxic, would be unbelievably welcoming and share their fandom with any newcomer to the fandom. We’re all just sick of being fed uninspired garbage, with nothing to get excited about or share, meanwhile people like Critical Drinker are more entertaining than the actual movie/show they are commenting on.

I didn't mind Bran on the throne. It kind of makes sense. They need someone to bring stability while the country rebuilds. I just hated how rushed it was and for once, it wasn't a studio's fault. Daenerys's turn was way too fast and about as believable as Anakin's in Revenge Of The Sith. If Season 8 had about 4 more episodes, and some stronger writing, I probably would have liked it more. Benioff & Weiss were just in over their heads without source material to work from. Season 8 almost felt like a spinoff.

I’m kind of the same. I think he’s talented but also, in some ways overrated. He talks out of both sides of his mouth about Tolkien. Sometimes respecting him and sometimes dissing him if you read between the lines. George is an infinitely better writer than I’ll ever be, but I’m not alone in thinking he makes his books overly complicated to hide some of his writing weaknesses. He’s also always struck me as someone who goes whichever way the wind is blowing that day. He’s never seemed genuine to me.

I saw another video that looked at ASOIAF from a bit of a philosophical perspective. It changed my own perspective of the series and GRRM. The biggest thing I took away from it was that ASOIAF is just unrelenting cynicism, about everything, with no solutions on offer. Everything goes wrong for everyone except the worst people; everything's corrupted. It's just so bleak. This in mind, I've come around to thinking GRRM is overrated myself.

Thanks for an interesting video. Guess I'm a toxic almost fan. I found the world and the characters introduced in his first book to be very interesting but by halfway through the second I realized it was a soap opera set in a fantasy world and I've never cared for soap operas. My wife and sun tried to get me interested in the video series but they made the mistake of getting me to watch one of the ludicrous battle scenes.

I too am a "Toxic" fan by George's (and many others) definition. However I am also the owner of a very Tolkienesque IP. I would never describe the feelings of non fans as being toxic. You don't like my work that's okay, it probably was not meant for you. And that is where today's producers of these disappointing adaptations of IP's that we love are 100% wrong. Star Wars fans didn't all of a sudden start hating Star Wars, we hate that they've ruined it. On the other side of this... I would never start a heptology, stop at book five, write two related books to fulfill my contract, and then go around giving my fans false hopes that I'll finish the series someday. FYI I'm currently writing my 7th novel and it is not to my publisher until the end of 2026.

Couldn’t have said it better myself. These fans they find so “toxic” would willingly hand over their hard earned money for a good product. Some, even a mediocre product. I have zero respect for any creator that doesn’t at least pretend to respect their fans. At the very least, fake it, if you’re that arrogant or miserable of a creator 😂

@@stingerjohnny9951 That's because true "nerds", no matter where we all end up going in life, we can always come back and speak the same language. We can smell a poseur from a mile away, yet will be as welcoming to new people to the fandom as the OG's. That is where Hollywood screwed up.
