A man impersonates a missing child and fools his family into thinking he's still alive. It sounds bad, but it somehow gets worse.
"Nicholas Barclay, aged 13 at the time he went missing, was last seen playing basketball with his friends in his home town of San Antonio, Texas, on 13 June 1994. Barclay never made it home and has not been seen or heard from since. In 1997, Bourdin took Barclay's identity and was flown to the United States. Although Bourdin had brown eyes and a French accent, he convinced the family he was their blue-eyed son, saying he had escaped from a child prostitution ring and the ring had altered his eye color. Bourdin lived with the family for almost five months until 6 March 1998.
In late 1997, a local private investigator grew suspicious while he was working with a TV crew that had been filming the family. The investigator compared a photo of Bourdin's ears to Nicholas's ears and discovered that they did not match. In February 1998, the FBI obtained a court order to take the young man's fingerprints and DNA, which were later identified as belonging to Bourdin. In September 1998, Bourdin pleaded guilty to passport fraud and perjury in a San Antonio federal court. He was imprisoned for six years, more than twice as long as recommended by the sentencing guidelines.
When Bourdin was returned to France from the U.S. in 2003, he moved to Grenoble and assumed the identity of Léo Balley, a 14-year-old French boy who had been missing since 1996; DNA testing proved he was not Balley.
In August 2004, he was in Spain, claiming to be an adolescent named Rubén Sánchez Espinoza whose mother had been killed in the Madrid bomb attacks. When the police found out the truth, they deported him to France.
In June 2005, Bourdin passed himself off as Francisco Hernandes-Fernandez, a 15-year-old Spanish orphan, and spent a month in the Collège Jean Monnet (a junior high school) in Pau, France. He claimed that his parents had been killed in a car accident. He dressed as a teenager, adopted a proper walking style, covered his receding hairline with a baseball cap and used depilatory face creams. On 12 June, an administrator from his school unmasked him after seeing a television program about his exploits. On 16 September, he was sentenced to four months in prison for possessing and using the previous false identity of Léo Balley.
According to interviews, Bourdin has been looking for "love and affection" and attention he never received as a child. He has pretended to be an orphan several times."

If the family killed the son by accident then this person was the perfect excuse. People can get awful violent on coke and very self centred on H. I've never seen anyone go as far as to harm their own child personally but a coke addict and H addict aren't exactly good company speaking from experience. One wants to make an impression on everyone around them and the other doesn't want to care, throw a kid into the mix, especially a fifteen year old with tattoos and maybe the family curse and it's a recipe for disaster.

This seems like a double jeopardy, Frederick was a criminal trying to pretend to be a missing kid, the Barclays (I think that’s the right spelling) were looking for a solid coverup for the murder of the son(allegedly). @iMajoraGaming
@iMajoraGaming 2 жыл бұрын
wot? "certain people?" "that idea?" wdym? trying people under the age of majority as adults isn't like, automatic, the default is to charge them as a juvenile, which carries different sentencing structures. whether or not they're charged as adults requires a separate action, and what age that petition becomes an option at varies, it also varies depending on the crime. some crimes can be charged as adult crimes at any age, like homicide. it's not even "an idea" people got from somewhere, some people don't know that the courts can elect to charge you as an adult at certain ages, some people just lack that knowledge. it's not an acquired idea, if that was what you were saying, which it may or may not be, because i have no idea what you were trying to say, or what group or thing you were referencing as the source of smoothbrain. is it like, TV? the internet? brazzers? i'm legitimately confused as to what this was trying to say tbh

It would make perfect sense why the family accepted him into the home if they actually killed the real son, they were trying to cover up the murder, and were worried that if they were too skeptical of the son then the police would be suspicious of how strongly they believed the son was no longer around, so they took him in instead of turning him away, which would allow them to cover up even more smoothly for the murder. If you think about it like this, it makes a lot of sense why they so blindly accepted him into the home and refused to believe he was someone else, because it was perfectly covering up the murder they committed.

Honestly, hearing the childhood of Frédéric Bourdin, I have to question if it was really immorality that caused his actions. He had piss poor parents, then lived with his grandparents (which, IMO based off my own grandparents, would still not be the most stable of environments). It also explains his “flights of fancy”. Sometimes making up a story about your past is easier than accepting your true past. Once he got sent to a youth home he finally got stability. Thus it could be possible that his brain intrinsically tied youth homes with stability. As far as faking being a missing kid? I’m guessing the one youth home asking for proof of his age made him realize this form of stability was ending for him and he was desperate to find any other form he could. Then he finds out that he could pass as a missing kid. Thus potentially giving him stability that would last (as well as “parents” who actually loved “him”). I don’t know any more about this story than what was said in the video so there is a fair chance something disproves some or all of that, this is just me saying that there are people that do immoral things but not for immoral reasons.

@l L Yeah, I heard that at the end... maybe. I personally feel like he's a ne'er-do-well that made excuses for the horrible things he did when he was caught, but I don't know what it was like to go through his life so I could be wrong. Either way, rough life or not, what he did to other people is so heartless that I don't have much sympathy for him either way.

Indeed, there has to be a motivation other than just laziness or profit. My workplace is negligent about disciplining/helping an addict on staff (employment law here says we can't just fire the drunk cokehead even if management coule get their act together). The guy does all kinds of little cheats and corner-cutting on his work to make it seem like he's working while he's actually wasting time drinking, snorting or napping. I've done the same job and cleaned up all his silly leftover hidden work, and I'm positive that it would actually be less physical and mental effort for him to just do the job the right way, rather than bending over backwards trying to cheat. He's not doing it because he's lazy, he's doing it because the grip of his addiction has him convinced that it's somehow saving him effort when it's really just making time for him to get wasted on the clock. It has GOT to be easier to just earn your money and pay your way rather than constantly living someone else's rules while also faking an identity. Profit doesn't make sense as a motive for this guy's messed up actions.

A weird story for sure, immediately I was horrified someone could do this... then as his childhood story is told of no loving parents, abandonment etc, seeking a loving family makes perfect sense to escape the past and bury pain. I’m split in feeling sorry for him at the same time, not everyone gets a structured, safe childhood. Like drugs and alcohol, sometimes people need an escape.

The case is bizarre and unique however you look at it. The official story is that Nicolas Barclay's sister Carey arrived in Spain, and Bourdin tried to convince her that he was Nicolas by going to a back alley and getting a guy to give him Nicolas's tattoos and dye his hair, and then when Carey arrived he pretended to be traumatised and withdrawn, and barely able to remember her. This way he was able to manipulate her into talking to him and telling him about the Barclay family and showing him all the family photos she had brought, which let him gather info on the Barclay family and it was this information that let him convince the American authorities that he was Nicolas - he could recognise the members of the Barclay family. But if you believe the theory that the Barclay family had killed Nicolas and were trying to cover it up, then it puts an entirely different light on the whole situation. Instead of Bourdin being a world class con man who managed to manipulate a sister into accepting him as her lost brother, it was a murderer sister who was insistent on showing a conman all the photos of her family and manipulating HIM into playing along and assuming the identity of her dead brother. Either way it's a simply insane story and it's hard to believe it really happened. The theory that Nicolas was killed by his own family is interesting and it's possible that Bourdin had realised something about the family was off during his stay there (according to the private investigator, the novelty of being in America and going to highschool and being part of the Barclay family had worn off very quickly and Bourdin had become extremely miserable with upholding his new false identity, particularly because not all the relatives and friends were convinced that he was Nicolas. The investigator actually claimed it was Bourdin who voluntarily came clean to him about not really being Nicolas.). But the problem is, he had no evidence for his claims. He claimed the family had killed Nicolas and knew that the boy wasn't coming home, he even gave a location for where the body was buried. The authorities dug there and found nothing. Being already an identity thief, there's not a lot of credibility or sympathy on his side, despite his claims being fascinating. It's just as likely that he's lying and the family really was innocent and fell for his deception because they were stricken with guilt and grief over Nicolas's disappearance. Who will ever know? Still, imagine if it had gone down like Orphan: First Kill.

@ComedyLoverGirl

Maybe not. If you watch the documentary The Imposter, that investigator claims that Bourdin actually willingly came clean to him about it. Because apparently Bourdin wasn't having a good time living with the Barclay family and was miserable, so his cover may have been blown eventually anyway, if say he tried to run away from the Barclays. Who knows what actually went on while he was living there, I mean this obviously isn't the stable wonderful loving all-American family that Bourdin had dreamed of. He says they killed Nicolas and that the body was buried in one part of the yard (it wasn't), the family says Bourdin is lying and evil. But overall Bourdin is fairly vague and tight-lipped about what exactly he saw or heard in the Barclay household that made him believe Nicolas was dead. And he has since tried to move on from this chapter of his life. So we'll never know.
