The Gordie Howe International Bridge project is a once-in-a-generation undertaking. Not only will the project deliver much-needed transportation improvements for international travellers, it will also provide jobs and opportunities for growth to the Windsor-Detroit region and includes features that make this project truly distinctive.
The project is being delivered through a public-private partnership (P3). A public-private partnership is a long-term performance- based approach to procuring public infrastructure where the private sector assumes a major share of the risks in terms of financing and construction and ensuring effective performance of the infrastructure, from design and planning, to long-term maintenance.

Heartfelt congratulations to all those workers who participated in the construction of this truly magnificent bridge. I must admit to having a lump in my throat seeing the two steel workers, one from the US and the other from Canada, meeting on the last girder and shaking hands between the flags of our two countries. That picture symbolizes a record setting and historically significant event for Canada and the United States. Thej Empire State Building, steel-framed skyscraper rising 102 stories that was completed in New York City in 1931 in only 410 days..DURING the Depression. It never used to take us years to build things. Gordie Howe bridge: First proposed in the early 2000s, the project was met with prominent opposition by Ambassador Bridge owner Manuel "Matty" Moroun, who believed competition from a publicly owned bridge would reduce his revenue. A Canadian federal Crown corporation, the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority, was established in 2012 to coordinate the bridge's construction and management. Environmental approvals and other permits were approved in the United States and Canada in the early 2010s. Lawsuits by Moroun alleged that the crossing agreement was illegal and the Ambassador Bridge had "exclusivity rights". These lawsuits were denied, along with various attempts to stop property expropriations, allowing the project to continue. The "Bridging North America" consortium was selected in July 2018 to design, build, operate and maintain the bridge, and construction began that month. The CA$3.8 billion cost of construction will be funded by the Canadian federal government, paid for by bridge tolls. Construction is expected to be completed in 2025.

The Ambassador Bridge is still necessary as it connects the two parts of the Detroit-Windsor metropolitan area. My guess is that it will be eventually purchased by Michigan & Ontario, with a Michigan & Ontario international crossing organization formed to operate & maintain all the crossings from the Blue Water Bridge to the Gordie Howe Bridge, similar to the NY NJ Port Authority that's responsible for all the NYC crossings to NJ

@@Randy201851 They never should have given it up to the Moroun family to begin with, so hopefully the politicians will show as much iron as these workers and expropriate it for some sort of public bridge commission to run between the two national governments. Absurd that something requiring an agreement between two countries should be in private hands. Fat chance of it getting resolved that way though, since they had all this time to do so already and never did.

@@wyldhowl2821 The Ambassador Bridge was always privately owned. The original corporation that built it & operated it for decades put it up for sale, Moroun outbid the others, including Warren Buffett, taking control in 1979. @boldontarian
@boldontarian 2 ай бұрын
Since steel expands in heat, welding the bridge together would be inadvisable as it could lead to warping and bending of the structural steel. The bolts and metal plates allow for some movement to accommodate heat expansion. Even wrought iron bridges built in the 1900s were riveted together rather than welded, allowing for heat expansion. Same principle with bolts, only they hold better and can be tightened as necessary.

Try coming out of Tim Hortons at that street, You won't be able to see anything cause they're so dumb they put a huge white sign right at the curb blocking line of sight. If only the City of Windsor was competent or we had journalists in Canada.
