This true dialogue of Lorraine is very necessary, really!. All young teenagers should listen this brillant speach of Connell's mother (Lorraine) because this happen every single day, in all generations: teenager stupidity, teenager fears, teenager bullshits, bullying, fals friends... Inside and outside, Connell felt all of those feelings at this moment, in the novel and in the TV serie too. Women said this true to all young generations is one of the most beautiful moments that I saw on TV serie. Lorraine's character is georgeous. I totally in love with her sincerity, honesty, strong, powerfull, sweet and lovely character. All my RESPECT! 💞✊🏽

@Duygu Sensum, of course yes!... Lorianne is the first but Niall & Elaine (Connell's real friend and Niall's girlfriend) and Joanna & Evelyn too (Marianne's real friend and Joanna's girlfriend). All together celebrate the Marianne's Birthday, beside Connell & Marianne on the last episode.
@LG-xx3ti4 жыл бұрын
This was difficult to watch. I adore Connell, but he desperately needed to hear this. As much as he cared for Marianne he treated her abhorrently in the beginning and I'm glad his mother called him out on his shit rather than make excuses for his behaviour which is what most mothers do for their sons. Lorraine really was such a good mother, even to Marianne. She was the one person who was consistently advocating for Marianne.
@jonallred70234 жыл бұрын
I think maybe why I like this scene so much is because, in so much of the story, what needs to spoken out loud, isn't. Lorraine puts it right out there. Exactly what needs to be said is said, with no doubt about the meaning, and she's right.
@3casesbelly4 жыл бұрын
I know what you mean, I have watched the series but hesitated to click on this clip because I remember feeling so tense during the exchange. So clear the pain from Lorraine’s own life experiences leading her to this point, and part of it is also a reaction to finding out that as much as she tried, apparently even her own son is out there doing things that are not kind to women. Larger than gender, it’s a matter of people taking advantage of good-heartedness. It’s the first time Marianne (the girl Connell didn’t ask to the debs) has been involved like this (with her feelings, you know), and she’s too hurt to stand up for herself in quite the same way, although she does in a less mature by ending the relationship abruptly.
@kventinho4 жыл бұрын
@Yeah Okay what do you mean? Are you implying that if he were Connell he wouldn't have treated Marianne this way? (not surprising considering how sweet he comes across in interviews haha)

Marianne deserved better than Connell al together. He’s terrible at communication and treated her badly because he’s scared of how others perceived him and can’t say what he wants. He also lead her on a few times. He even emotionally cheated on his current gf with Marianne. Marianne really did go through hell.

This encapsulates one of the most interesting parts of the show: the contrast between what feels right and the influences of the internal and external environment on those feelings, and what IS right. The same way Connell's social anxiety and loneliness made him feel (and think) that he couldn't ask Marianne to the debs, Marianne was convinced by her toxic family (external factors) that their toxicity was normal and "right" and that she was in the wrong, constantly failing to meet this ostensibly reasonable standard they set, all the time. I love the show because it captures so well the struggle of trying to understand what is right in the world when you feel so wrong all the time on the inside.

One of the issues one gets from the book is that Connell does not know who is father is and this aggravates his sense of being lost in the world. Also in the book Lorraine reveals that she was thinking of chucking him out of her house because he behaved so badly to Marianne. Finally, in the book there is a scene just before Connell goes to rescue Marianne where Connell asks his mother whether she would have been better having an abortion rather than having him. Lorraine replies that having him is the best thing she has ever done. This puts Connell in the right frame of mind to tackle the drama that would enfold at Marianne’s house. The book is a rich source and deals with some themes not dealt with fully in the series including abortion, money, urban and country differences etc
@kventinho4 жыл бұрын
@@richardwalters2264 wow. I think I really need to read the book then.
