People don't know how to read actions. McDavid was skating behind Hughes. Hughes was going one way with McDavid following behind him, then Hughes suddenly turns around and gets a high stick to the face. He basically ran into it. McDavid didn't know he was going to turn around so suddenly. Sure, it was purely unintentional on McDavid's part but a high stick is a high stick and should have been called.

They basically deliberately miss a 4 minute high sticking penalty on the best player in the NHL and then tell the guy who they saw get whacked he has to leave the ice because he's bleeding. Gee, I wonder how that happened? Wayne Gretzky got the same treatment throughout his career. At times I didn't mind it, but in a close series, you have to call things like that. They did the same thing at the end of game 6 in 1994. Messier broke Trevor Linden's ribs when he was down on the ice and the referees did nothing. Gary Bettman took over the NHL in 1993.
