It's fun being a trillinguist, in my case: 1. As Indonesian, when we're still living Japan, we had honeymoon in Paris. Went to Rodin museum, order lunch at their cafe. A Japanese elderly couple helped us with the French although the staffs clearly can speak English, but anyway they started the chat in English. They were surprised that we can speak Japanese and we all were surprised that we actually live just 1 kilometer apart. 2. Went to Istanbul to Topkapi Palace, a local carpet seller guy started the conversation in Japanese asking if we are one (although we're not). Ended up talking Japanese in Turkey when three of us weren't even Japanese. He said that he used to sell carpet back in Tokyo. So bizarre

@@IDragonKnightI There is an elderly volunteer staff in Hello Work Shinjuku who used to live in Indonesia (hope he survives the pandemic) and can speak a native level Indonesian. I highly recommend Joey pick up Spanish as his third language. It’s one of the easiest languages for English speakers to pick up and a huge majority of the world speaks it! I’ve traveled across South America and even Europe thanks to learning a Latin language, helps so much.
@yakitatefreak
@yakitatefreak Жыл бұрын
As much as Spanish seems pretty obvious, learning Tagalog is probably the best idea to get acquainted with Aki’s family (his girlfriend’s family). You start learning Tagalog, and the Filipino fan base is going to be a very appreciative audience. Bonus points for future in-laws too. Spanish is a good gateway to Tagalog, but the reverse is true too, since there’s some vocabulary similarities between both languages. For example, “basura” is rubbish/garbage/trash in both languages. Adobo is popular in both the Filipino cuisine and Mexican cuisine. Flan is a pudding-like dessert that jiggles in both Mexican and Filipino food. Pork rinds that’s fried? Chicharron (Spelling may differ, but the pronunciation is similar). There may also be some grammatical similarities too.

I wonder if the reason Joey gets mistaken as Indian/Pakistani/Sri Lankan is because he is part European, part Asian which isnt too far off what many Indian people are if you look far back enough. Im not sure if Hindi still has a lot still of the Sanskirt thus PIE roots but many northern Indian languages especially those derived from Sanskirt are notably related to Latin and Greek. But the “European” Vedic culture which shot off of PIE ones intermixed with the older “Asiatic” Dravidian culture in India

I work at a hotel in Huis ten Bosch and I can tell you that copying a passport and copying a residence ID is for insurance purposes. Japanese people do this but they have to write their home address, phone number, and email. Since foreigners can’t be expected to write correct Japanese on their registration cards it’s much faster and easier to just photo copy something that has their current address on it. In my professional experience for both foreigners and Japanese, this reason is because of you break a TV and don’t tell us and leave, leave without paying, or die (seriously) we know where to go to next. Hope this helps.

In the US you have to show your ID when checking into hotels, most of the time. It’s incase you’re rowdy and F up their stuff. If you say “oh, I live here” that’s just weird, they’ll be like, “you live at the hotel?” Showing your ID is pretty much mandatory and has nothing about where you live.

Hotels usually ask for passports to have a record of everyone who has entered the hotel, in case the police requests it. If the police are looking for a Japanese person, then they already have access to all their passport information and it's easy to identify them, whereas with a tourist or a non-Japanese national, they do not have that information. Thus, if a foreign wanted criminal stays in a hotel, they would be able to track him down much more easily with their ID information being stored. That's the reason for photocopying the passports. Most hotels in the UK do this too.

Tbh this whole freak out about showing your ID is a very British or American thing because people usually don’t have an ID Card or a passport. In basically any other place it’s totally normal.

I went to just buy some shoes in Fukushima city and got asked for my passport (at which point I show them my 在留カード because obviously I didn't have my passport on me) which I just found a little strange just for shoes 😆 don't think they copied it though. Are they not supposed to do that then? Can I decline them?

The Welsh aren’t the only ones that have a bone to pick with the English. They did piss off about half the planet at one point lmao.

The Welsh are the original inhabitants of what is now England. The Saxons came over, took their land, and pushed them into a corner and the Welsh have been pissed about it ever since. Something like that.
