There are certain anime that work fascinatingly as entry points: Death Note, One Punch Man, Attack on Titan, Odd Taxi. They are main stream for a reason: they reel in unassuming newbies minute by minute.

Attack on Titan looks awful from an outside perspective, one punch man looks like there's nothing to it and seems stupid, and death note sounds like whiney goth crap... Haven't watched any of them but I personally don't think they seem like good introductions to anime.....to be honest though it's only been Arcane Castelvania, Carole & Tuesday and Kipo that I've really enjoyed in quite a few years

@@micabryant4513 About Attack on Titan? How does it look awful? It doesn't make any sense. Just watch the first episode and it's likely that you're going to be invested into the show, specially when you have lots of questions about what and why is happening there, generating intrigue to the viewer (where the answers will be a massive surprise as well because AOT has probably the best twists in anime history, specially in the last season). One Punch Man is just popcorn entertainment just like they said, some people can get into it if they're looking for something crazy or fun like that. Death Note is interesting enough to get people invested as well, specially people looking for something serious and intriguing. If you haven't watched any of them, then under what logic could you say that these shows are not good introductions? Because me and my brother introduced AOT to my parents and they really loved it and quickly became invested on it.

Hellsing Ultimate is top tier up until the end. The final twist was... I won't say bad, but not up to my expectations. Hirano wrote himself into a corner he couldn't get out of as easily as he entered. I guess it's a 9/10 overall.

When I was in high school and getting into anime the absolute worst part was having no one to talk to about it. Oh, my kid brother was into the harem shows and had scene some of the same shows as me like Shakugan No Shana and Haruhi Suzumiya, but where I searched for other shows he kind of stuck in that fanservicey comedy romance like Familiar of Zero and Aria the Scarlet Ammo. So... I tried getting my dad into anime. Fullmetal Alchemist? Nope. Too sad, he said. Attack on Titan? Too sad, he said. I tried a few other shows because I really didn't have anyone to talk about anime with but eventually i just gave up. Then, last year, I'm already in Uni, I have friends to chat about anime with. My dad Netlflix and he's kind of talking to me about anime as we scroll through it... And "Erased" comes up. I go "you might like this show" and he watched the episode blind... He liked it. Said he wished it was live action cause he's never liked the "anime eyes" but he was really intrigued. So... Yeah. Try "Erased" I guess.

That's my issue on changing writers. I mean Gen Urobuchi had failures too, so it's not a guarantee that what he wrote will be better but at least it won't be a series of short stories with no conclusion.

Nothing too crazy or weird or over the top that might turn away someone who's never experienced the medium before, just stuff with good stories, interesting worlds, great characters, a bit of darkness for good measure to keep things serious. If I think they could handle the more wacky stuff, then we start going crazy with some Gurren Lagann or something, but that probably comes later. Honorable mentions also to Baccano, Code Geass and Fate;Zero (if we wanna start them down THAT rabbit hole!).
