I knew all this but now seeing it visually helps me mentally to replicate it for myself. Especially the slingshot, I can do it but occasionally I bump the gate as it drops so my timing is a bit off but watching you demonstrate it helps me visualize how I can fix it. What it is for me is I wasn't pulling at all I was pushing the bike out now I see I can push my body forward and pull the bike just slightly and I can have a faster gate because I won't have to hold up when I bump it.

hey Conner I was at a tomy zula clinic and he said to keep slight presser on the front foot... that's the only thing I don't get is it just personal preference? Hey man I’m having problems finding the right tire size and rollout I feel like it’s to hard to start pedaling or to easy when switch from a 1.60 to a 1.75 like I can’t get the front end up to ride the gate down as it drops

cheers Connor, needed to practice my gate starts and that video was helpful. Question: I have been going to the gym for roughly 2 months and focusing more on explosive exercises and trying to improve my burst out of the gate. been doing: squats, lunges, leg press etc. for my legs and i feel stronger on the bike but not quicker, do you have any suggestions?

Try squat jumps, where you have a slow count squatting down, hold at the bottom, then explode up! Also box jumps with a weighted vest. Flat start sprints with flat pedals where you learn to convert your strength to the bike.

Alejandro Rodriguez I would recommand the lights dude, it allow you to start faster, because your eyes are faster than your ears to tell your brain to go, hope you got it xD

i would reccomend lights coz you have a quicker reaction to ur brain than from the ears to the brain

My 8 yr old raced his first race yesterday and got 3rd place. My question is how do you figure out when the gate will drop to do the slingshot and not go way too soon and eat it ?

I've been watching elites doing the sling shot you talked about in this vid and have a question or two. 1) does the bike coming back happen naturally or is that something you consciously tell yourself to do?2) do you push off the gate backwards to engage the sling and then advance forward?3) essentially how do you go forward with the body and backwards with the bike simultaneously?Thx

Skimoore Powder good questions, I can answer the third one, the bike goes back because you push the bike with your legs when the gate fall, then you pedal so it comes back :) hope you understanded me ^^'

Nope, go on the first beep or light, but have to be really focused and ready!

If your right handed why have your right start peddle and not your left??? @5:14 you can see that you got an okay snap but your follow through was a bit weak. If you had that right peddle for your follow though you'd get much more power on that all important 2nd crank. Just a little trick Mike Redman showed me when he had a small training shop in Costa Mesa (it could've been Santa Anna, I don't know it was back in 1992). Thanks! Ok riders lets set'em up. Interesting. You call it a slingshot and in our day it was called rolling the gate and it was illegal. I am noticing all the new riders using this technique. The advantages are multiple if one understands anatomy. When was this technique deemed legal again? I am curious. Been watching your vids for a few months and enjoy the trip down memory lane. Signed, the Human Dragster. No, not Tommy Brackens, the other Human Dragster. I'm in my middle 50's and still ride. Still have a Thrills on Wheels sticker on my bike from when I lived in your neck of the woods. Been thinking about hitting Orlando track after watching your vids. Pretty sure I will still be the first guy to the first jump...LOL...Peace!

I can remember around 1983(?) when the ABA formalized that in their rule book - the rider's front tire had to be in contact with the gate until the gate was released and wasn't allowed to break the plane of the gate, informally referred to as the "Ronnie Anderson rule." I just started up again in USA BMX's 46-50 Novice after 35 years away from the sport and I was surprised to see how many expert riders were doing this until the gate operator mentioned that rules had changed.
