What Paul does-signaling right when overtaking and left when returning to his side of the road-is actually how I was taught when I learned for my test years ago in Poland. So, if you have someone from Poland doing the mock test, you might notice the same pattern. I don’t do this anymore because I learned from your videos that I shouldn’t.
@artemkatelnytskyi2 күн бұрын
From my experience it is the way people are taught in most countries since the tests tend to be quite black and white and, for example, moving into the oncoming lane and back is considered a lane change and you MUST use turn signals. It is how it's taught in Ukraine too. So the UK test is quite unique in that it judges every signal according to the situation and doesn't require it if it isn't needed, for example. They also specifically make a point about checking mirrors before using the signal which I also agree with. In other countries it's either signal then mirror or they don't care about the order altogether.

@@ConquerDriving Its the same in Hungary as well. You must signal left to turn back into your own lane. 15 years ago on my test, the road was wide but it was one lane, a bust stopped on the side, I overtake withouth moving the car anywhere from a straight line as the road was comfortable fot the bus and the car but my examiner said it was a fail, because I didnt signal right and then left as passing the bus. I got quite angry and explaind him signaling would have been unneccessary as I didnt move the car anywhere from my lane and he said okay for this one time.

I hope you don't mind me analysing this video Richard and providing my point of view. In my opinion, this is a first class instructional video with humour thrown in. I was a driving instructor for many years and watch a lot of similar content and although driving rules are somewhat subjective in how they are interpreted there is a way that you have to get that across to a student. You have to be able to state definite rules and point out quite forcefully when they have been broken but you also have to be able to explain with examples and with modesty why a student should consider doing things differently. When doing this, you must always be able to say why. So many instructors I have known are happy to say what not to do but less able to explain the reasons. You need to be able to approach the subject from more than one angle and using examples from your experience. This provides the student with a full understanding and also an ability to apply the same sensible rules to many other driving situations (i.e. is it necessary? Is it potentially misleading? etc..). I particularly liked how you tried to reason what would or wouldn't be a 'serious' in the examiner's eye. I really think your style nails all the above points so well. You are modest yet factual and not at all big-headed. That is rare for our profession. The way your mind works is so similar to how I tried to be as an instructor and so it seems I am perfectly on your wavelength. I could not find fault in anything you said or how you explained it. Any pupil would learn so much from watching and listening carefully to your appraisals. I know they do, as there are plenty of comments to that end. Finally, I laughed out loud when you answered one of Paul's happy, ice-breaking questions with "that's none of your business". You were having a bit of fun but that exact thing happened to a pupil of mine once at the hands of the 'most feared' examiner at the local test centre.

46:50 There are pressure sensors before and after the lights, the camera takes a picture of your vehicle before the stop line on a red signal and then after the stop line on a red signal. Typically those prosecuted tend to be fully across the stop line but it is an offence to cross the stop line with the red signal. In terms of timing when the lights went on red, some camera safety partnerships give up to a second before they start to prosecute as to remove any doubt that the driver was unable to stop (e.g., the London Met, Leicestershire Police), some do not (South Yorkshire Police, Derbyshire Police.)

Your usage of signals is interesting and sounds really intuitive, but here in Czechia, we have to signal pretty much every time we make any change. Passing parked car, cyclist, pegion or whatever signal out and than back, exactly like he did... Leaving from paralel parking, you must use the signal and wait or if someone let you go, it is ok.

That's a long way home Paul, good for you for not minding getting tested. But I am surprise as small as new Zealand is, everyone got automatic. But NZ is small in comparison.

46:48 my cosine who worked as a police man for a short time said that technically any part of your vehicle over the line if it is red before you have stopped (if it was high traffic and you were just inching over the line then about to go but it goes yellow and you stop over the line thats fine) then police can charge you for it, tho they likely wont do anything about it unless your rear wheels have gone over the line, for cameras though id imagine youd have to go pretty far over the line as small cars exist so even if it uses radar to detect how far away the rear of your car is to the sensor it wont know how long your car is and will have to give you the benefit of the doubt. but who knows, in 2 weeks you may get a letter, but hopefully not.

I'm not sure as once you have passed the stop line then it's legal to proceed if it's safe even on a red light. So my guess would be that the camera has to see you drive across the stop line when red not the middle of the junction.
@gefulltetaubenbrust278814 сағат бұрын
@@ConquerDriving I know how this works in germany at least and I don't see why it would be different in the UK. So basically, the camera will flash when you go over the stop line on red AND when you go across the junction on red. I've seen plenty of times where traffic was congested, so lots of people got flashed because they were still in the junctions. However, to prosecute someone for a red light violation, there must be a picture of both happening, of going across the stop line AND junction on the red, so you would see two flashes if you commit a red light violation. There is also a slight tolerance on the time the light has been red for, so even then you won't necessarily be prosecuted for a red light violation, although in germany, you can still get fined for going through amber or going over the stop line on some occasions. Little not UK-applicable fact as well, since in germany it is legal to cautiously go through a red to make space for an ambulance or police, if it is apparent from the photographs that you were doing so, you will not be prosecuted.

At the end of the video, Richard asks the fella his opinions about driving in Britain versus New Zealand and he comments that New Zealand has fewer people per area compared to Britain being a tiny country with lots of people. Yes, it is very stressful driving here in the UK and demands focus and concentration at all times to avoid collisions. That being said, the ‘licence swap scheme’ doesn’t take that disparity into account and perhaps needs review? Back in the 50’s and 60’s not as many people had as many cars as they do today and British motorways were hardly congested at all. Is the ‘license swap scheme’ fit for purpose? Does it allow too many to come to the UK who have not been subject to some form of testing as Britons are? My wife works for an American company out of New York and one of her work colleagues moved here as part of his job. Because the USA is not listed with the rest of the world among those countries that can participate in the ‘licence swap scheme’, the man and his wife were forced to take the written and practical test even after driving in the USA for many years. The wife passed both tests first time, but the husband failed and had to retest, taking time out from work, etc. He complained about the disparity of the USA not being included with Commonwealth countries even after explaining a jolly good argument that many US states have roundabouts and have the same if not more stressful driving conditions as the UK, including New York rush hour traffic, snow, icy conditions, etc. I was reading a news article about South Africa (one of the ‘licence swap scheme’ countries), and problems with people bribing driving examiners to obtain a South African drivers licence. Those with a suspect SA driving licence can then move to Britain and conceivable obtain UK licence with a few simple clicks on the computer, no questions asked about ability to drive a vehicle safely on British roads. Then there are European lorry drivers who come to the UK and kill people because they cannot successfully navigate the swap from right to left. We keep hearing the DVLA tooting their horn about making the roads safer and their high standards of examination and testing while one could drive a truck through the glaring loopholes.

Rolling observations. 10:46 Be patient. As the main road flowing driver, it’s annoying to see an indicator go on, because you cannot tell if the stationary car is just going to go - as many do. In heavy traffic I see someone’s request as fair; and will add it to my list of considerations. But again you shouldn’t be duty bound. 13:47, that’s a roll back. The faded lines roundabout is horrible and I thought dealt with very sensibly & safely. Knowing where to dominate your lane in the arrival of that bus was hard. 16:26 a pet peeve that people fail to get out of lane 2 and into lane 1 between the penultimate exit and the actual exit. Okay it has two lanes and is presumably empty, so fine on such a clear day. But the van could misread you here. Essentially it’s a dangerous move on a bike; if mistakenly hogging lane 2, I’d only swap to lane one once exited the roundabout. 16:40 to 17:05 shy of doing 40 and is why you’ve ended up with a BMW passing on your left. 17:29 … ahhhh. Exactly this habit from 16:26. 22:50 agreed on useful lane discipline. Unfortunately the trend for lane cutting now means you’ll often get the likes of the black car pull out on you because they assumed you’re taking the prior exit. Bad UK habits. Super pleasant guy giving this a go. Seemingly very enthusiastic. Can totally relate a job change after a long stint in engineering. Good video and interesting notes & insights yet again. A truly educational video for anyone wanting to learn, brush up or broaden example knowledge. 👍 The bigger & frequent note: *Speed & gap* : 20:40 makes no attempt to sustain the 2s gap. Again, given experience it should be habit and easily judged. It’s a good 20 seconds until the gap eventually arrives, only when the traffic starts to pick up pace closer to the 40, where the candidate remains closer to 30 again. By 21:22 I don’t think he’s aware of the 40. Hard to see on the distorted lens, but maybe he saw the lights on a long green and anticipated change… (yet sudden stop). 21:55 again what’s the limit, but again maybe the lens gives false sense of how far away the bend is. (23:00 in contrast much nicer, perfect to look for a rolling start if it’s there). There’s an important note to take on speed awareness especially when a candidate usefully gets up to a speed (often gets to 30) quickly - it helps show when they heed caution in other areas. So this would seem harsh, but whilst prior to 24:05 the gap was plenty, again I question the awareness of it being 40 and yet lets the car trickle up closer & closer to the car ahead (in the slow traffic) at his comfortable speed. And this comfort zone leads to your problem on the lanes later. 30:24 I find it common people are happy at 30-35mph everywhere. And gives them a false sense of safety. All the warning signs were there in the last half hour. You’re dead right that the gap on the left needed using and come to a complete stop - it would be a swift stop at this speed (not eye popping) but quite normal in day to day driving. Yet being aware of gravel & traction. The continuation shows either : poor observation & planning, or poor hazard perception, or panic in the ‘Im committed now’. I couldn’t chit chat & deal with those hazards. I wonder how many people can. A worthwhile topic to cover. All of these notes on speed & gap, I wouldn’t recommend getting motorbike; which doesn’t bode well for everyone else if he does drive a car; but unfortunately this style of driving is very common. Lovely guy; great attitude & intentions. Clearly capable. Something like IAM would be right up his street.

Going 1-2 mph over the limit is a minor mark? Driving in the UK is hell

Depends how long for but it can be.

In portugal it's fine, no examiner says a thing unless its 2-3 above limit. You can be 5 above the limit but just for a very brief time.

It’s still speeding
@aspzx2 күн бұрын
To be honest I was surprised to hear how much discretion the examiner has in marking the speeding. I figured it would just be a simple threshold but it's interesting that they can be lenient if the car is briefly moving downhill and if the student recognises and corrects their speed. I figured it would be more strict than that.

If you can’t follow the speed limit in a driving test, should you really be given a license? If you consistently drive higher than the speed limit on test day, the examiner may assume that you will drive even faster when you aren’t on a test

Interesting but, as the driver, he talks too much for my liking and doesn't seem to be concentrating enough. Hence missing the passing point and scraping to nearside and leaving it late overtaking the cyclist.

Do you think tests have become harder in the last 30 years? There seem to be a lot of gotchas that could result in failure, which I don't recall even being mentioned when I was learning.
@ConquerDriving2 күн бұрын
I think the test standard is probably a bit easier but the roads can be difficult even for an experienced driver in some situations.

Why do you have to be so rude I wonder. I know you are doing a 'character' and maybe you do it so you can prepare your students for any type of examiner but man.. this dude is on holiday, does this for fun to see if he'd pass and I feel there is no need for your character ( period imo ). This could have been a fun exchange of experiences between driving instructors.
