When you get the junk mail out of your mailbox, throw it directly into your recycle bin. Sort immediately. It is the only way to deal with it unless you can stop it from coming.

Yes! If you have a situation where you can grab the mail when you get home and then sit in your car and sort through it before you even get out, could be a game changer. It worked wonders for me. ❤❤❤

The first thing I saw in the mountain was all the bottles. I would have pulled those all off right away because its easy picking and would make a significant dent in the mountain.

@@Suz9006 , I agree. I would first break down all the empty boxes as they are bulky and take up so much room. Next. I would collect all of the bottles for recycle and then all the trash. That would clear up so much space and create more space to go through items to declutter or keep.

I can write a book about my adventure in decluttering. My husband was a hoarder. I lived with him for 50 years. When he died I had lots to do. My stuff was also getting out of hand. It took me 7 years to finally be normal and live clutter free. I got rid of family china, and thing people made me, etc. I didn't care. I donated most of it or threw it away. Another way to get rid of stuff is leave it at the dumpster. Right now I have 100 books in boxes to donate, but I'll need someone to pick them up. I can't wait to let it go!! Good luck on your journey.

I've watched lots of shows where others do the work of decluttering for someone. Those are interesting, but I can't tell you enough how your video is encouraging and inspiring me. When I see that you can take care of your own decluttering, it makes me feel like I can do my own, too. I especially like where you talk about not wanting to keep going, but you do anyway, you say it's not a a quick journey. It took a long time for the mountain to grow and it'll take a while to clear it. I also love watching you make all your own decisions for yourself. It's SO motivating, inspiring and encouraging to see you do this for yourself. I feel motivated to get up and try to do my own decluttering! I want to thank you with all my heart! Now, we'll see if I act on this motivation. I might have to watch several more videos of your helping yourself... to see if I can get up and get started. Immediately, as I think of starting, I remember there's no where to put most things....😊

Can't tell you, how impressed I am. I am German, 58, and did my declutter just one year ago. My mother was very organized, every one of her three daughters feeling to be a total failure in comparison until today. I learned how to storage stuff and doing the thing with papers as your friend did, at my first employment. So I had much more skills for it than you. BUT: It is not about how high the mountain is. Is it not about trash and empty waterbottles in between. It is also not about rotten food, as some of us has to deal with. It is only about HOW IT MAKES YOU FEEL. I also sat there for years, thinking "How could I ever solve this? No way." This feeling is like a stone on a rope around your neck. But one day. One day you will start. And yes, I needed help from a friend, too. I was able to decide what will stay and what has to go. But to think about the future of the items, that are not trash ... And she took all of them with her. Using it, selling it, trashing it... Sometimes she tells me, to whom she gifted some of my items and how happy they are. It is like a candle light, going from hand to hand, lifting up the mood of the one, who is just holding it. And yes. You meet your old dreams that did not come true. And yes, it is time to let go for some of them. New things and persons can only enter your life, if you have cleaned the space for them before. What I can also tell you, is: Living in a decluttered home is like someone, who lost a lot of weight: Everyone else can see it. Only himself is still feeling overweight. Brain is faster than feelings. Sometimes I trash my home during a week and think (as for decades): How should I solve this? The brain answers: No problem. Every item has its home, you will be done in an hour. But the feeling... still has a mountain to conquer in front of it. Love your honesty. And your ability to TELL your thoughts and feelings during this. You do not necessarily have to write, to be a writer. ❤

I have so often come to the same conclusions as you...and other thoughts of mine that never were even clear in my mind until you actually SAID it. I am glad you say it's OK to pause...it's OK to not throw stuff away...now. It's a process...and we learn about ourselves along the way. And what a great reward! A nice place to sit and look out the window! Brava, Mira!!❤💐

I’ve been on a decluttering journey for the last 5 years. Little by little peeling the onion back. I like to keep track of how many boxes and bags I’ve donated (43) and how many things I’ve sold (~300). I don’t even know how much I’ve thrown away too. It keeps me motivated to see those numbers grow. Great job!

Mira, I just found your channel last night, after watching Bonnie from A Beautiful Mess clean your kitchen. I’m so impressed with your progress! I can identify with you in so many ways - I have a ton of books too, and they’re hard to let go of. All my flat surfaces are full of stuff. I have a craft/scrapbook room that’s been a dumping ground for 15+ years. A few years ago, I finally started painting it - moved as much as I could into another room, but the rest I had to keep moving from one side to another, over and over, while painting all the necessary coats. Now I’ve been SLOWLY going through all my stuff, trying to figure out where to put it so things I want to use are easily accessible, and displayed in a cheerful, pleasing manner. I can’t wait till I get to the point where I watch what you do with your craft room, but I’m starting with your earliest videos and working my way forward. I enjoy longer videos, and greatly prefer listening to you narrate them, as opposed to the music. Keep up the great work! 👍

There were many moments of empathetic anxiety and fear while you were so courageously throwing things out and sorting the donations. And the devilish boxes of clutter!!! I know that feeling only too well!! The ups and downs. The beating yourself up. And having a friend you are comfortable with to help you! Priceless!!! Many blessings to you. I look forward to seeing the rest of your videos. A move forced me to deal with most of my clutter but I still have boxes and more boxes to go through. When you talked about the daunting box that had over lots of miscellaneous items that you were going to have to deal with, and how much it stresses you out - don't think of it as having to deal with over 100 things - just deal with one item at a time. And if you use Dana K white's no-mess decluttering process, you won't make a bigger mess than when you started. Remove trash and then if there are items that already have a designated home, take them there right away, then look for "duh" donations - as in, "duh, I can get rid of this!" and then what's left you ask if you needed this item, where would you look for it first, and then take it there now. If you don't have a good answer, ask yourself if it would ever occur to you that you had the item. If not, you can probably get rid of it, because chances are you would go buy a new one anyway, because it would never occur to you that you had one :) What I love about her process is that she never asks if this item brings joy, or if she's used it in a certain amount of time - she just asks "where would I look for this item first" - no judgment about whether or not she *should* keep the item :) My brain works like her brain, so it has been really helpful in decluttering my house! (I'm still working on it - after about 20 years! One day I'll get my house fully decluttered!)

So glad she could help you. I'm proud of you for letting her help you. You're doing a great job. On the junk mail, why not when you have some time make junk journals out of the junk mail & sell them. I know a lot of people do it. You can use your sewing machine to sew pockets to pages, & tags, or just make pretty designs. I love doing it. I haven't tried to sell any yet. I'm more of a sewer, i make Raggedy dolls like raggedy Ann & Andy & sold several too, but a long time ago. I make purses, pouches, & stuffies! I get the intimidation factor of 'the box of stuff'. Ive come to think of it as 'well, if I haven't needed it for this long, what are the odds I REALLY need it now? It's hard to part with stuff and it might sting a little if you have to buy something you DID throw out, but it's incredibly rare that there's something important in those boxes. You really end up looking through them for deep sentimental things and can donate or junk the rest. You mention it being hard when they're gifts. You give and get gifts to show love. It's the act of giving, not the gift itself that's important. Also, I appreciate your honesty in tearing up at the amount YOU DID in those days. You did SO well and we're all SUPER proud of you! And hope you still are too!

You did great! But it is a marathon! Maybe it could be easier if in one first pass you just throw away boxes, cardboard, wrapping paper from packaging etc. Those things that are just trash and take a lot of space. That will leave just the things you want to initially keep. You can put them aside more or less organised. Then on a second pass, you could categorise things while seeing what you can let go. And the next time to time you can revisit each category when you feel its time and see what is really to keep and what is not. At least things will be more organised from the start, and each time you will have the feeling of accomplishment and won’t get overwhelmed by so many decisions. That is how I decluttered my whole house, it took time but it worked. And what a great friend you have!

I see two things you can do in the future to keep this from happening again, and one of them I see others have commented on--throw that junk mail away when it arrives! I don't know of any way to stop it from coming--how I wish I knew! The other thing is, when you finish a bottle of water, don't just toss it aside. Put it immediately into recycling. Keep up the good work!

Holy Moly~ I got all the way to the end and YOU ROCK! That was freakin' amazing! You got all the done in just 5 days of chugging along at it! You are doing soooo good! It's good to work on a smaller less intimidating space next; give yourself a little breather, but not stopping completley. You go girl!

You are doing so good! I can hear the emotion in your voice at the end. I always find I emotionally declutter when I physically declutter. Keep going and let it bubble up. We are all human. You are so brave and strong for making these videos. You don't know how many people you are helping to motivate. I like your long video too.❤🎉🎉

Well done Mira, that was amazing and so motivating. Put a No Junk Mail sign on your letter box, you can buy them at hardware stores. How about investing in a water filter instead of using all those single use water bottles. In New Zealand each home has recycle bins. It's great to be able to brake down boxes and get rid of them right away. I'm excited to watch your decluttering journey. ❤

Brilliant job hon, it was wonderful to see you sitting on your couch again, and see all that stuff going out of your life. Couple of suggestions: Don't count the number of items due to be decluttered ie in that box. Count instead the stuff you are getting rid of, weather it's items, or bags or boxes. It feels an even bigger accomplishment and that way you are motivated to do and get rid of more. Plus, for me, it was like , OK I got rid of 1797 items, I must find another 3 to round it up to 1800 😁 Great motivation. Next, Don't put the boxes back on the couch at the end. Sort them during declutter into a box per room, and next time you go to that room, ie bathroom, take bathroom box with you. You can organise it later but at least stuff are in the correct room and living room looks even better. On day to day basis, put the items near the door, and again, when you go to a specific room, take the item with you. I find that I now am so used to it, I activity ask myself is there anything I need to take to the bathroom 😁 Re the length, my preferred one would be around 20 min, or I might have to wait for the weekend to watch it. But I will still watch it either way 😁 You do whatever is best for you. I like that you talk through the video, personally I hate music in the decluttering videos, as I like to hear person's thinking process and decision making, just like older Hoarders Heart videos before this year. Sending a scratch to your lovely dogs ❤❤ Keep going 😁

My family and I moved earlier this summer. Our possession date was moved up by a month and a half, so we couldn't declutter nearly as much as we wanted to before the move. Most of the essential items that we use daily have been put away and now I'm left completely overwhelmed about what to do with the rest. We packed in a hurry and not well or efficiently, so many of the boxes and bags are a hot mess. And now the house is in need of a good cleaning to boot. And the yard needs attention. There's nobody like Mack or Bonnie or Barbie where I live to help me. But watching your videos is giving me hope and inspiration. I'm going to go through a few boxes right now. I've at least managed to keep my bedroom and bathrooms tidy.

Sorry to leave so many comments! I just have a lot of excitement about your cold process. The anxiety you talked about, when it starts to get worse before it gets better. Are usually take a break to bring stuff to the Goodwill at that point. It gets me out of the house, and when I drop it off at gives me a big dopamine rush. Gives me a fresh state of mind, a little fresh air and sometimes I stop for a coffee or a treat. Before I resume decluttering, II also take the trash out of the house and the recycling. When I come back, there is more space because of the donations been gone . Then I get fresh boxes and start the process again.

When you mentioned there was a couch under that pile, I blinked and had a brain reset. XD Video length is fine. :) Main thing is seeing it to completion. Love before and afters. That tape line is crazy. The pile didn't look like it stretched out that far, from the initial angle, but that really cleared up a lot of floor! I actually paused partway through this video and went and read a book, 'cause seeing other people with books helps kick me into gear to go through my collection. :)
