It is clear that the level of sociopathology within corporate capitalism is rising. In his original essay “The End of History”, Francis Fukuyama’s most significant observation was not the victory of liberal democracy but the fact that we were entering a “post-historical” period. This has had the more profound effect because without a sense of time, without some form of “Whig Historiography” there is no sense of progress, and without progress, Modernity’s great humansing aspirations have been largely removed as a socialising commentary within the practice of capitalism. Add to this the ascendancy of a highly abstracted rational language within economics and its pulling away from pragmatism and reality towards unattainable ideals (what John Ralston Saul described as “The Dictatorship of Reason”), we find that there is no longer any counterbalance to the sociopathic pursuit of profit. For the sociopathic corporation, the destruction of the planet and the enslavement of most of humanity are merely unintended and insignificant byproducts of this pursuit. No amount of humanistic reasoning or appeal will alter that view.

How we define progress appears to be what is missing? The idea of Growth for growth's sake appears to be a failed notion that now needs to face the cold reality of weather that is no longer withing the limits that we have tailored economies to exploit? Agricultural output is simply an economic feature of a small number of individuals exploiting machines to produce profits. The concept of providing food for the Humans in our area has gone and been replaced by Ag Industry. Profits might grow, but they do not feed anyone.....

@@danielhutchinson6604 I absolutely after Daniel, it is all too easy to mix up notions of progress with notions of efficiency which, as you rightly point out is highly damaging to agricultural practices. Certainly progress for agriculture would be a return to more sustainable and mindful strategy, something that Vandana Shiva's cotton seed project highlights. Ultimately I think we could develop a notion of human activity as a balanced, worthy and nourishing idea which is framed outside of the Modern narrative of human dominance. I am reminded of the crucial questions out by Bruno LaYout at the end of the Twentieth Century: Can we The Enlightenment without Modernity? (and) Will a different democracy become necessary? A democracy extended to things?

@@mickfeltham2887 Native American traditions suggested that living a life that preserved Nature for seven generations was a sustainable method of seeking a balance with the Earth that supports us. Modern methods of promoting growth without allowing for the needs of sustainability, is a dead end. Humanity takes precedence over Economy.....

There's no such thing as "green growth". Economic growth necessitates the destruction of the environment. There's no "decoupling" happening either.
@PeterSkye

Not really, because economic and physical growth are 2 different things. You can nowadays become rich just by providing services, virtual products... environmental damage and resource depletion is not always a necessity, in addition, investing in technology and being financialy secure as an individual can help with bringing more solutions. I admit that current capitalism is flawed, but these are 3 strong arguments that radical leftists just don't want to see.
@aristocraticrebel

@@PeterSkye This is just nonsense. Virtual products still require the internet and transportation. Both need energy. Lots of energy. And I'm not a radical leftist. On the contrary.

@aristocraticrebel4642 Fair enough, everything requires some energy, (regardess of politics) but the point is... this can still be sustainable and renewable. Resource depletion would happen even in state-driven economies. I 'm not saying that regulations aren't important, they are crucial... but I doubt you're not radical if you completely bash different opinion 🙂 That's exactly what extremists do. Economic and physical growth is not the same thing and that's the fact. If "degrowthers" can't admit this, then who's talking nonsense here? 🤷‍♂️ Even in such utopian world... there would still be manufacturing for masses, the main difference would be that freedom, free markets and innovation would suffer. Such government would no way be transparent. Everyone who would like to run business or disagreed, would end up badly. This idelogies would lead to authoritarian regime sooner or later. So sad that many don't realize this. I come from post-socialist country and... no thanks! There must be more than one way! And if you say there isn't, how are you not radical? 🙂

@@PeterSkye Renewable energy technology doesn't exist. Solar panels and wind turbines aren't renewable. And why are you spouting all of these liberal clichés? I'm not saying state economies do a better job. They're even worse. Again, you don't even know what my position is. And yes, economic and physical growth ARE the same. You need physical things to grow the economy. What planet are you living on?
@PeterSkye
@PeterSkye Жыл бұрын
@@aristocraticrebel they are partially conected, but it's not the same. If I teach students... give speeches...whatever...I can grow financially... and barely use physical resources for that. Whereas I can be selling furniture, and that's quite different story. ...Although you can even make money from fully recycled items. That's what I mean! To grow financially doesn't automatically mean to spend more physical resources and this is why I don't fully agree with Degrowth movement. What planet? I could ask the very same question. The source of solar energy and wind energy isn't depleted when used. So tell me how is this not renewable? I don't mean to offend you, but perhaps check the definition of renewable energy. ...And yes we need physical resources, but that doesn't mean we should destroy our economies... when i mentioned "the other ways", I meant to find ways to use less physical/finite resources and focusing more on recycling and renewable energy. ...And yes I do think we should consume less and buy from better sources etc... but that doesn't mean prosperous economy and good climate can't coexist. :) Proper regulations and innovation is important.
