The ‘hard problem’ of consciousness is very topical in neuroscience today. It asks why our brains, which function unconsciously for the most part, require consciousness at all. It also asks how the subjective stuff of experience can be inserted into our mechanistic account of brain functioning. There seems to be no place or need for subjective experience in the physical universe.
In this talk, Mark Solms will outline the novel approach to this problem that he has taken in his recent work as reported in his new book, the Hidden Spring: a journey to the source of consciousness. The argument begins with the claim that it is a mistake to take human cognition as our model example of consciousness. Why tackle the problem from its most complex end? If we begin with the simplest forms of animal consciousness, he argues, the ‘hard problem’ becomes less hard.

Professor Mark Solms is best known for his discovery of the forebrain mechanisms of dreaming, and for his pioneering integration of psychoanalytic theories and methods with those of modern neuroscience. He holds the Chair of Neuropsychology at the University of Cape Town and Groote Schuur Hospital (Departments of Psychology and Neurology). His other positions have included: Honorary Lecturer in Neurosurgery at St. Bartholomew’s & Royal London School of Medicine, Director of the International Neuro-Psychoanalysis Centre, London, and Director of the Arnold Pfeffer Center for Neuro-Psychoanalysis at the New York Psychoanalytic Institute.
Professor Solms’ books include: Clinical Studies in Neuro-Psychoanalysis (winner of the NAAP’s Gradiva Award Best Book, Science Category in 2001), The Brain and The Inner World (2002), and most recently: Hidden Spring: A Journey to the Source of Consciousness (2021)

The secret to consciousness, is the concept of the self. It is your self that is conscious, right? No self, no being conscious, no conscious being. Self evidently. If to your self that's not obvious then stop, there is no point continuing. What is a self? It is a word dwelling in your vocabulary. Where is your vocabulary? Obviously inside you. The word self is both the pattern of the sound or print and its meaning. Its meaning is the more important part. Its meaning is the nucleus to which all other concepts are related. Collectively and dynamically they constitute the greater self. When your self is modulated by input from the environment or memories or unconscious cogitations, those modulated changes are what it means to be conscious. No change in the self, no being conscious. Contemplate that for a while and soon you will convince your self that's what being conscious means. Cheers!

Very interesting. I wonder if there is a study of how the brainstem evolved from the simplest forms of life to the primates and man and if a parallel study has been done to investigate the seat of awareness and emotion at various stages of brainstem evolution. Such study would clearly be challenging.

I find that your hypothesis regarding the location of consciousness compelling. But I wonder about other aspects of consciousness that becomes apparent in split brain cases. It seems that consciousness can be localized in either the left or right hemispheres. Each half acting differently and separately. Maybe the reticular formation is the source affecting each hemisphere differently. What is your understanding about these split brain cases?

Very interesting and clearly superbly researched and presented Now I am a just an ordinary average IQ person But I still do not fully understand what my 'awareness' is Its like reality is a personal quality I can only vouch for my reality as I cannot provide evidence that any other person has the same kind of experience as my self (probably Solipsism) However I feel and react I am still the experiencer The metaphor of the part of the brain that acts like the plug to connect the TV to the power I understand But where does the signal required for the TV to 'come alive' originate?

@@hyperduality2838 I love the syntropy concept. But I find it a bit convoluted at times. Gets bogged down in cultural details. I wrote a book about it 20 years ago that solves a lot of the problems and since I used to teach experimental methodology and data interpretation, I devised a new experimental methodology to get empirical traction on the idea of teleological meaning. I introduced it in a series of papers in the 90’s and several conferences around the world-culminating in my book “The Textbook of the Universe: The Genetic Ascent to God.” Thanks for your input, and I encourage you to continue your extremely interesting investigation and viewpoint which you briefly presented here. And there is also a 5th law of thermodynamics, energy is duality, duality is energy -- potential energy is dual to kinetic energy, gravitational energy is therefore dual. Duality: two equivalent descriptions of the same thing -- Leonard Susskind, physicist. The word entropy means "a tendency to diverge" or differentiate into new states, reductionism -- science. The word syntropy means "a tendency to converge" or integrate into a whole state, holism -- religion. Divergence is dual to convergence, differentiation is dual to integration, reductionism is dual to holism, division is dual to unity, so syntropy becomes dual to entropy! Your mind converts information or entropy (average information) into syntropy in the form of making predictions to track targets, goals & objectives -- a teleological process! In a communication system messages are "predicted" into existence -- Shannon's information theory, hence the use of probability. Entangled entropy or quantum entanglement, Fisher information, mutual information = syntropy. There is a perfect, ideal or Godlike state in physics -- the laws of physics! The laws of physics are the same & equal for all observers everywhere -- they are independent of the observer's perspective. For instance the velocity of light is the same & equal for all observers. Objects fall at the same, equal rate (acceleration) in a gravitational field -- Galileo. Objective is dual to subjective, absolute is dual to relative, independence is dual to dependence. The laws of physics are the same & equal for all observers implies a principle of objective or absolute democracy is at work here in physics. Objective democracy is the scientific definition of democracy! Objective democracy is a goal or target -- teleology! Science wins through consensus. Consensus = mutual agreement or objective democracy. Objective democracy = a Godlike state -- teleology. Teleological physics or syntropy results in a Godlike state in physics or the 4th law of thermodynamics! Teleophilia is dual to teleophobia. "Philosophy is dead" -- Stephen Hawking. Main stream physics and science is currently dominated by teleophobia because Immanuel Kant associated teleology with God, but teleology or target tracking is very real for observers. I am thoroughly enjoying the book. About half way through, and really enjoy the clinical examples he lays out in a way that does not really push a point of view. His theory is quite good. I dont agree with it, but it is quite good. I do think that he conflates the operating system with the hardware functions, to put it in computer terms. If you have not read the book, I would recommend it. It's well worth the cost. Not something I can say about a lot of books. I personally believe that consciousness arises from the persistent perspective afforded by the functions of our mind that deal with classifying experiences/memories in ever increasingly generic categories to aid in association with new experiences and the prediction/correction nature of how our mind operates. Qualia is the biological affect of the salient association of different aspects of our memories/experiences as determined by our present need (psychological/physical) and our needs and focus at the time of the experience. At least, that sounds like a plausible explanation to me from the physicalist perspective. I need to believe in the more spiritual explanation though.

I think I understand your point of view. Solms probably agrees with you, but perhaps he is exploring/approaching consciousness from a scientific perspective. When Freud was putting together his theories, he said that at that time, scientific exploration had not developed the tools for the research he believed was necessary. Mark Solms has picked up where Freud left off. As a matter of fact, Solms has recently translated most of Freud's notes from German into English and the results of Solms' translations have been recently published. I believe there are two volumes. (I've watched many of Solms' videos)

That the thought of a rock is not a rock is too obvious. Still, out of respect for consequences, I'll dodge that thought if aimed at my head. It seems to me that 'reality' depends entirely on context. i.e. in the context of a film, the Matrix is quite real and in the context of my dream, my levitation is a fact. Context is a very important concept. Is movement a property of things or a property of their context? Imho the answer is the latter and so brain is to matter as movement is to mind. Creative Intelligence functions consciously and unconsciously simultaneously, and thus, is prior and fundamental to consciousness. What appears as separate is in Reality, Continuum of Being. What we experience are the qualities/qualia of our perceptions/impressions. We do not experience the hand of our partner; we experience the sensations in our hand. The abstract called Love can be expressed concretely as a hug, etc.

It's very clear that Mark's view of consciousness is that of reactivity to stimulus. I feel like this is such a western perspective. Eastern philosophies say that consciousness is either /or both perception of stimulus and reactions or the observation of the perception of stimulus and reactions. At least, that is my understanding of what they say from a shallow perspective. I think it goes much deeper than that from some tidbits I've read and heard. Also, from mediation myself. ---The fascinating thing is that I/me/self does seem to disappear at some point in mediation. Or at least seams to disappear. But, that could possibly be a disconnect between states of being. I/me/self could very well exist in deep meditation, and it and non meditative I/me/self don't talk to each well. It could be that in mediation, we are more connected with selfs and out of mediation, we are self.

I just started this but to me "experience" vs "in the dark" (i.e., non-experience) was rewarded by evolutionary biology. The organisms that "experienced" consciousness used that experience to more successfully navigate the challenges of life. Those early humans lived to procreate more generations of "conscious" humans vs the less successful "non-conscious" early humans. Qualia won.

Thank you for your comments-very interesting…but, the always proverbial but: In relation to the video I made my original comments to, I see no direct correlation with your comments, however, …we need to stay cautious about consciousness as, at any given time, we only perceive a small portion of reality, not unlike the flashlight illuminating one small portion of a large dark room, (I am sure you heard of this analogy). Then, on top of it, is what out there really what we perceive or is it what we are used to as interpreted by others, or maybe want or expect to perceive, so we can justify our thoughts? This is part of the “hard problem” of consciousness. As to Carl Jung, I think what he meant by a collective unconscious is the archetypes which manifest themselves in our myth and symbols for example, viz. Joseph Campbell. I am unclear as to your interpretation of duality. Do you define it as interdependence? It implies a full knowledge of A and B as A is dual to B. But when do we attain full knowledge of either or both? An example is given by you: “Gravitation is equivalent or dual (isomorphic) to acceleration” By the way, isomorphism has different meanings if you are a linguist, a mathematician and so on. How would you define it in this context? Unfortunately I am unsure of the duality in this argument: it is more like cause and effect, acceleration is caused by gravity. We can detect gravity through measuring acceleration, but gravity is a distortion of the time-space, according to good old Albert. Gravity still exists without a probe measuring it. We define gravity as a field. Synthropy seems to be equated to several interpretations in your comments: mind, the internal soul, prediction and teleological physics. I do not understand, sorry. In particular teleological physics, is this a new field of study? Just as with gravity, entropy has a physical definition in thermodynamics which basically states that the energy in a system degrades to a point when the remainder of the energy in that system can no longer do work. My latest view is that reality is a network of relations (graph) similar to the model in the Wolfram Physics Project and consciousness is simply a state of being aware within the network. Each self is one of those unique and eternal connection points. And from the self-point, objective reality is the the "projection" that results depending on the position of the self-point. My recent focus has been on the apparent mystery of how mere matter can be responsible for the being conscious process. I say 'the being conscious process' instead of 'consciousness' because that word fails to clearly broadcast the fact of its abstract nature (and I see lots of people writing as though they believed 'consciousness' to have an existential status somehow equivalent to matter, as though it were an actual existent like what believers mean when refer to 'ghost' or 'soul'). Process is an abstract concept. The self is the home of the being conscious process. The self comes into being when the meaning of the word 'self' joins the collection of meanings constituting one's vocabulary. All the words in one's vocabulary exist in the form of analogies that are instantiated by the discharge frequencies of neurons. (Note that 'frequency' is also an abstract concept). The network consists of these analogies which are encoded as frequencies that modulate each others meanings by changing others frequencies via the vast numbers of interconnecting synapses (20 thousand on average per each brain neuron) in the process we call thinking. When analogies generated by the body's sense organs enter the network via the connecting neurons, they sometimes ripple through the unconscious analogies which then modulate the analogies that constitute the self. The self is thereby changed and it is those changes that constitute the objects of which the self is conscious. (If nothing changes in the self how can it be conscious? The being conscious process ceases in a brain that has been frozen. Tom Cruise could not have been dreaming in Vanilla Sky, the main impossible-to-swallow aspect of that movie). Civilization evolved language and five millennia after getting started writing was invented and with it the concept of the self. That first five thousand years was indeed the garden of Eden for without a self there was no possibility of cheating or stealing or lying. Have you seen Ricky Gervais film, "The Invention of Lying"? Oh dear, what an incoherent hodge-podge of ideas. Still, I imagine that you get it (and see that the 'collective consciousness' is in fact the process of language running in the civilization in which we are the network nodes. We have 3 states that energy can exist inside the universe. A positive state, a negative state and a neutral state (which requires positive and negative energy). Atoms are built from particles that consist of positive, negative or a neutral state. Emotions are tied to these energy states. We can only consciously have a positive, negative, or neutral experience. The rest of our emotions are properties that emerge from the matrix of connections to those experiences. Just like energy can exist in various states at various energy levels so can our conscious experience. We experience varying levels of positive, negative, and neutrality. Our emotions are governed by the very energy states available to us through the particles that we are constructed from. Consciousness cannot be an emergent property of these energy states because consciousness is what measures them.

The physical charges are not conscious and they are not energy they are just energized. They consist of only positive negative or neutral charges. Which is the measure of these interactions. Physical memory, the energized charges we are built from in whatever arrangement they exist in. The particle wave duality is a part of the duality of self. Myself, himself, herself, yourself, ourself. We are all a projection of self. We think of ourselves as the "observer" in truth. Self is the observer, we are the projection of the observation. Self experiences the wave and projects the particles unto us. What really changes from the observation is the projection, which changes the identity being projected not the observer. Particle wave duality is just the duality of self. All protons, neutrons, and quarks are stationary charges that equate to on and off switches. The proton is an off switch that has space for electrons. The neutron is an on switch; it has no space for electrons. We are a moving electrical field which produces a magnetic field, the magnetic field of our moving electric field interacts with the magnetic field of the electrons trapped in the stationary charges creating the force we know as gravity, giving rise to particle spin. The more connections our electric field makes with these stationary charges the stronger the force exerted on the electrical field will be, equating to a stronger gravitational field. If you are inside of a moving electric field you are subject to the force exerted on that field from the magnetic field interactions that take place. This is where gravity and mass comes from, the interaction between the magnetic field of our moving electrical field and the magnetic field of the electrons trapped in the orbitals of the stationary charges we're connected to. The perceived mass depends on the mass of the field we exist in. What we perceive as a particle is the "self" projected image of the electrically charged field interactions that are taking place. Our perception is limited to the self projections we are presented with. Electromagnetic radiation is the neutral carrier that connects the moving electrical field with the stationary charges to exchange information. Self is not unique to the individual, the individual is unique to self. Force is great at carrying energy from an internal to an external state, it is equally good at carrying energy from an external state to an internal state. Your comment is precisely the reason that some people experience lives that they wish they could change, yet they can not. The unconscious need for self destruction is out of control. Finding relief from unhappiness and self destruction can be found through psychoanalysis. How do I know? Because I've experienced the self examination that only occurs with the help of a well trained, experienced analyst. It's impossible to turn around destructive behavior without psychoanalysis. Seek out an analyst with ideally 25+ years experience. Best wisher to you.

Good Talk ! But I still don't see how you think you have or that we can "bridge the gap" between the "quantities" of physics(mass, charge & spin etc.) & the "qualities" of experience(red, love & hunger etc.) in a "NON-arbitrary" way, even in principle. The two domains are simply incommensurable with each other. That is the actual core of the so called hard problem imo. & even if there existed a 1:1 mapping(which there doesn't), you'd still need a comprehensive theory as to why only that particular map & not ANY/ALL others. You're just focusing on function & structure. Its not even a "problem" to be solved in some future version of our models, its just an artifact of the flaws in our built in assumptions of materialism/physical realism which even QM has been refuting for nearly a century. We just need to upgrade our metaphysics/narratives/worldviews. Not at all to say that such work isn't useful. The more we know about structure & function & such the better off we are. But science can only(NOT derogatory) deal with the "behaviors" of nature & should not even be expected to settle questions of what nature is, in & of itself, except of course to rule out certain ideas, which is also just part of progress. Our current preferred philosophy(often unexamined mind you) is so obviously flawed that its finally at least "fashionable", even for those in academia, to put panpsychism & such on the table publicly. Though a modern monistic outright idealism such as Kastrup's alters is what currently connects the most dots, & by FAR imo. So why does kissing evoke so much pleasure and emotion? Mind you,.. I am not complaining,.. far from it,.. but for the life of me I see no function that is served by kissing,... other than the pleasure and emotion than it evokes??! Kind of circular,.. isn't it?!? The universe is devoid of qualities, so is your brain - there is no "red" out "there", its mass, spin, charge, angular momentum... How could the experiental quality of "red" come into existence at all? We are talking about the strong emergence of a whole ontoligcal genre out of nothing. Now, the color red is just one singular example of the infinite amount of qualitative experiences possible for a human to experience. I think the reason why so many scientist/philosophers throw the baby out with the bathwater ("there is no hard problem"), is precisely because of this issue.

We do have a physicalist explanatory framework for the correlated physical brain processes, but there is an ''explanatory gap'' as to how phenomenal experience might in principle fit into that framework. There is no known physical mechanism or process which explains it. So it's like saying we understand how a car engine causes motion by noting what the engine does when motion occurs, without understanding things like energy, forces, friction, the laws of motion. That's what I understand Chalmers to be getting at, and why physicalism (at least as we currently understand it) wouldn't predict phenomenal experience to manifest in this or that part of a brain, or at all.

I'm seriously tempted to dismiss such stuff, (37:15), as twaddle. But as I keep coming across alleged experts, holding similar positions as an astrophysicist telling me that the moon is made of cheese, I feel qualified enough to dismiss such gobsmackery out of hand. Still I'd like to be corrected where I'm wrong. Apparently quoting Freud : Cognition can "go on unconsciously", (SHOCK, I have trouble here dealing with the idea that I might need to explain this), so we're supposed to believe that realisation, the light bulb moment, the birth of understanding, happens beyond awareness of what is being understood ? 😳 ? And then there's the goshlydillyfookery of having identified a part of the brain which functions as a power switch, assuming it to be the source of what understands, just because the presence of what understands is not detected by alleged experts, when the switch is removed. I don't claim to know how or where consciousness originates, but I frequently experience the reformation of it, where and when mental stability is gained, due to the slowing down of what becomes mental energy to the point where it acquires enough stability for me to identify myself with it. I've not seen anything from this chap to show that's dependent on one particular bit of brain, rather than it has a tendency to happen, wherever self has been conditioned to happen. That my personal experience is not peer reviewed presentation of fact, does not make such assumption fact, either.

I am a physicist and I will provide sound arguments that prove that consciousness is not generated by the brain and that the origin of our mental experiences is not physical (in my youtube channel you can find a video with more detailed explanations). This implies the existence in us of an unphysical element, which is usually called soul or spirit. Physicalism/naturalism is based on the belief that consciousness is an emergent property of the brain, but it can be proved that this hypothesis is inconsistent with our scientific knowledge and implies logical contradictions. There are in fact 2 arguments that prove such hypothesis contains a logical fallacy. 1) All the alleged emergent properties are just simplified and approximate descriptions of underlying processes and arbitrary abstractions of the actual physical processes. An approximate description is only an abstraction, and no actual entity exists per se corresponding to that approximate description, simply because an actual entity is exactly what it is and not an approximation of itself; an approximate description is an idea that exists only in a conscious mind. This means that emergent properties are concepts that refer to something that has an inherent conceptual nature (abstract ideas). 2) An emergent property is defined as a property that is possessed by a set of elements that its individual components do not possess. The point is that every set of elements is inherently an arbitrary abstraction which implies the arbitrary choice of determining which elements are to be included in the set. Therefore, any property attributed to the set as a whole is inherently arbitrary because it depends on the arbitrary choice used to define the set. Arbitrariness is a precondition for the existence of any emergent property, and consciousness is a precondition for the existence of arbitrariness. Both arguments 1 and 2 are sufficient to prove that every emergent property requires a consciousness from which to be conceived. Therefore, that conceiving consciousness cannot be the emergent property itself. Conclusion: consciousness cannot be an emergent property. In other words, emergence is a purely conceptual idea that is applied onto matter for taxonomy purposes. On a fundamental material level, there is no brain, or heart, or any higher level groups or sets, but just fundamental particles interacting. Emergence itself is just a category imposed by a mind, so the mind can't itself be explained as an emergent phenomenon. If a concept refers to “something” whose existence presupposes the existence of arbitrariness, such “something” cannot exist independently of a conscious mind and can only exist as an idea in a conscious mind. For example consider the property of "beauty": beauty is intrisically subjective, abstract and implies arbitrariness; therefore, beauty cannot exist independently of a conscious mind. My arguments prove that emergent properties are of the same nature as beauty; they are intrinsically subjective and arbitrary, which is sufficient to prove that consciousness cannot be an emergent property because consciousness is the precondition for the existence of any emergent property. The "brain" doesn't objectively and physically exist as a single entity. We create the concept of the brain by arbitrarily "separating" it from everything else; however, there is no objective criterion that allows us to identify what separates brain and non-brain. Obviously, consciousness cannot be a property of an abstraction, because an abstraction cannot conceive of itself. Any set of elements is an arbitrary abstraction because it implies the arbitrary choice of including some elements in the set and excluding others. Physically the brain is not a single entity and therefore every alleged property of the brain is an arbitrary concept, a subjective abstraction. This is sufficient to prove that the hypothesis that consciousness is a property of the brain is nonsensical because it contains an intrinsic logical contradiction; consciousness is a necessary precondition for the existence of arbitrariness, and therefore the existence of consciousness cannot be a consequence of all that implies arbitrariness. An example of a concept that does not refer to something that is inherently subjective and presupposes the existence of arbitrariness, is the concept of “indivisible entity”. Consciousness can exist only as the property of an indivisible entity, because only an indivisible entity does not imply any kind of arbitrariness; furthermore, this indivisible entity must interact with brain processes because we know that there is a correlation between brain processes and consciousness. This indivisible entity cannot be physical, since there is no physical entity with such properties; therefore this indivisible entity corresponds to what is traditionally called soul or spirit. Computation happens in the brain. Awareness happens in the electromagnetic field. The action of the neurons creates wave patterns in the brain's endogenous electromagnetic field, which are then naturally shared across the brain and "received" back sort of like a wi-fi signal, allowing for information sharing and holistic processing. The conscious mind consists of mental processing that dominates in the field. The unconscious mind consists of mental processing that happens in the meat brain but doesn't prevail in the field. The field itself contains raw awareness as an inherent property. It is just a brute fact of physics/quantum/relativity. (Does not have to be mystical or anthropomorphic.) The field does not contain intelligence or self-awareness until the brain causes it to resonate with dynamic information patterns. (Only a theory that some believe.)
