This video intrigued me right away and took my XH2 with 56/1,2 WR and compared the photo in same conditions and parameters with my old XT3 , and the 40 Mpxl camera was so much better!!

I just recently compared images from the Fuji X-H2 with the same 56mm f1.2 WR lens against my Sony A7Riii with the 85mm f1.8 and they were almost identical. Comparing my X-Pro3 with the X-H2, the newer camera is definitely producing sharper, more detailed images. @ian_worth, did you have the IBIS on or off for the X-H2 when you had it on the tripod?

I recently upgraded from the 50R to the 50Sii - same sensor but IBIS and better processor and display. Before the purchase I tested the 50R against the 100S as well as the new Sony A7Rv with its 61MP. In both cases the 50R produced the better images to my eye: less noise, better colour and over all more „organic“ looking pictures. So definitely test before buying.

I recently added a 'new' camera to my gear bag, being a Sony A6000, which as most will know is quite an old model 24mp camera. My principal requirement was not megapixels but weight. As I get older, I find my DSLR and lenses just too heavy to lug about. I'm already getting out more and taking more pictures. For me, weight is more important than MPs. Nice vid.

Same here, that's why i moved to fuji from full frame Nikon dslrs 5 years ago. It's made the world of difference to the weight in my bag, especially when shooting all day events with 2 cameras strapped to my shoulders. Loved the Nikons IQ though 😁👍

Was looking at the Canon EOS R system. Really a beautiful kit. But the RF lenses are big and expensive. So I‘ve given Fuji a try, and after 3 years, I am happy with it as it fits my style and easy to carry around.

Hi Ian, I think you are correct about sharpness compared even to and XT2. However I have got rid of my X-T4 and X-T3 and upgraded to the X-T5 for a few important reasons for my needs. One that wretched floppy screen which I hated and two the poor results I was getting with my 70-300. It would be just slightly out of focus with the 4 on nearly every shot. Tracking was poor for birds in flight. I feel there was an IBIS / OIS conflict causing the problem. I nearly sold my 70-300 as I thought it was a bad sample. So glad I didn’t. With the 5 there is a genuine improvement in image quality and the lens lives up to what I originally anticipated. Looks clean focus nearly every shot. The extra resolution is not why I bought the camera but having used all the XT models this is a leap in performance in nearly every area and has all the features on my wish list that I have ever wanted. Took a picture of the moon recently and cropped to around 200% and it more than filled the frame and was the sharpest moon image I have ever taken in years. Even better than the full frame Nikon I used 10 years ago or more. The problem with doing test shots in variable lighting conditions as you said is that the contrast changes and the appearance of sharpening is changed. The real test has to be seen in constant light to get the best samples. I still have my X-T2 and the results are great but I haven’t been able to hand hold a camera steadily for quite a few years so IBIS or OIS is a must for me. Great content on your site. Thank you.

For sure I am enjoying the 70/300 along with the XT5. The Ibis is superb, eye detection works very well indeed with a far better AF. Also I can crop in quite a bit and hold onto the quality. But the Ibis is the big draw along with the rear screen. Hand holding at 300 at a 15th of a second, an utter joy.

Great video Ian. Genuinely think with the improvements in AI up scaling we will soon rarely need that many megapixels if we only occasionally print at a size requiring it. If we’re honest with ourselves most of us don’t regularly print at sizes needing more than 26mp. I treated myself to the 70-300 rather than upgrading, looking forward to giving it an outing this weekend.

@@SteveMellorPhotography Thanks Steve, can’t wait to get out with it. I only really shoot landscape/woodland but may pick up the 1.4x if a tempting used example crops up. It was mainly the lack of weather sealing and some corner softness on my 55-200 becoming frustrating on more than a few occasions that swayed me to pick up the 70-300.

@@Paul9 I’ve got a video coming out soon where I compare the 50-230mm, 55-200mm and the 70-300mm. Whilst the other lenses are still impressive, the 70-300mm is just a cut above… It’s outstandingly sharp, super fast for tracking. Honestly, I’m surprised they didn’t put a red badge on it.

Great comparison. I genuinely believe we've hit the limit with APS-C. Fuji's 26MP sensor, I believe, is the sweet spot for this sensor size. We saw a similar situation when Canon released their 32.5MP sensor, very similar sharpness and low light ISO performance to their 24MP sensor, just a higher resolution.

recently bought an xh2 and my son has an xt4. the first thing we did was compare the recordings. and the result was shocking, we had the same findings. even magnified to 400% we saw no difference. I do think the xh2 feels better in the hand and I have the idea that the xh2 focuses faster than the xt4. if I had to make the purchase again I would definitely choose an xt4.

I don't see any major differences in image quality from X-T3 onwards from the Fujifilm line up. The upgrade differences will be battery durability, IBIS and Auto Focus.

The problem with the comparison is subject matter. The eye isn't going to notice or care about a loss of detail when it comes to random natural texture like rocks and cliffs. The benefit comes when you start cropping for added reach and look for the texture of feathers in a bird or the eyelashes or skin texture of a subject in a portrait.

Most professional models will tell you that they prefer a lack of fine detail in their portraits. Nobody wants to see a portrait with every pore/skin impurity.

@T. W. That's some professionals, not this one. When shooting skin I love to capture every detail. I shoot men and women so my uses are more diverse but when the makeup is on point it makes that high resolution shot soooo worth it. Also I get a great reaction from the women models when I zoom in and they can see the little hairs on their face 😁

The fault could be the lenses. I don't shoot Fuji but I remember Thomas Heaton took his X-T4 to the Himalayas to save weight. He wasn't that thrilled with the lenses' IQ compared to the Canon L glass on the 5D Mark IV he mainly shot with at the time. I shoot Canon and over the years I've upgraded from the 18MP 60D to the 45MP R5. It seems that the more MP in the sensor, the more it will reveal any flaws in the lens. I have a couple of non-L lenses but I mainly use them for video. All my photo lenses are Ls now, and the results are brilliant compared to the 5D Mark IV I used to have (30 MP and pretty sharp in its own right). I also have an R6 and while I get good photos from it, it's 20 MP images are not nearly as detailed as the R5's. So as far as your Fujis are concerned, it's possible the lenses are holding back the sensor's performance.

If I may say so, for Fujifilm, I always use Capture One and the difference in favour of Capture One over LR are glaring. It is like a totally different more precise sensor.

Interesting results. I would be curious if you used Capture One or simply compared SOOC fuji JPGs for those shots. In my experience with lightroom and the XT5, it didn't really feel like lightroom was optimized to fully support the new 40mp raw files yet.

Well over a year ago there were rumours (Fuji Rumours site) that said the new sensor in the X-H 2 was likely to be no more than 33MP since that was the optical resolution limit on all Fuji X mount lenses. That was one of the factors that made me decide not to wait for a high res APC sensor and I upgraded to a GFX 50s ii.

Hi Ian. Great video. I shoot GFX now but still use an XT2 and XH1 for events or product jobs as required. The main temptation to buy an XH2 for my use would be to use the 3:4 ratio now available to match my GFX, snd then my images all match up on delivery. I would like to think the extra mega pixels would offset the crop, but this video has me thinking maybe not. You could run these images through Capture One to see how they look. I think adobe has knocked it out of the park with its recent AI developments on people. But I had an instance recently where I mucked up in camera and needed to lift the exposure by a stop, in adobe I saw heaps of noise (GFX50sii ISO 800) but in capture one the image was clean. Try getting your hands on one of the latest primes Fuji has released and do another session. Cheers.

Great video Ian and wonderful perspective. Currently a Nikon shooter myself with Z7ii, and already heavily invested in their glass. But actually the Fuji system has been on my radar a while. When i saw the X-T5 and how it looked, the analog dials back again…im thinking of investing, not as a replacement for my Nikon, but as a compliment. It seems like it would be a great stills and wildlife camera, and i would be looking to get kind of an “all-in-one” system to do both wildlife and landscape. So would you recommend doing say the X-T3 and better glass? Or do we think the firmware upgrades that Fuji is famous for, will have the 40mb issues resolved/improved? Again, great video

Peaked my interest so I did some tests shots of my rug in lounge with X-T4, X-H2 using 23mm f1.4 WR LM (the new one). Used flash. Also used aperture of f5.6 so that the 40mp image would not be unduly degraded by diffraction (kicks in at f5.6 @40mp). I found the opposite: X-H2 marginally sharper than T4 in all cases: - Comparing raws in LR (same sharpening applied : 100, 1.0, 0, 23) - comparing jpegs in LR (same camera settings) - Exported both from LR to match H2 size (up sampling T40) - Exported both from LR to match T4 size (ie down sample H2). Both were much closer in this case, which should not be surprising. This was very interesting video. I've never thought that they could do something like this, to upscale in camera and sell it as higher mp sensor. I am not a fuji user, but I am thinking of switching to fuji. I am still using 16.2 MP nikon D4 to this day and never had need for more megapixels. I guess it is all about what you use your camera for.

Megapixels don’t matter unless you want gigantic prints. I shot on cape cod yesterday with a 10.2 megapixel Sony a230 and got wonderful results and had fun using it. The only reason for me to upgrade these days is for improved video features. But my G9 does more than I’ll ever need in that area. But I don’t blame the camera companies. It’s just like you telling people to watch your video to the very end to see your surprising results. That may be partly true but the real reason you want people to watch the video until the end is because it improves things for you in the KZbin algorithm. Everyone is trying to make a buck so to each each their own. You also keep also asking for comments because you’re interested in people have to say. That may be partly true but you also want people to leave comments because that also improves the chances of your video being in more people’s feeds. Nice video and thanks for the info.

Try set the "High Iso Nr" setting on the X-H2 to 0 ( if you don't have set to 0 already) And see if it make a different at all.. 🤔

I only use a 24.2mp Canon eos 200d and take milky way nightscapes with it with a Tokina 14-20mm f2 lens, it easily produces good quality prints of 60x40cm (basically A2) size and tbh i reckon they'd be good enough at 90x60cm. I'm actually looking at going to a full frame 6d with only 20mp, just because of the far superior low light and high iso performance

Well let's be honest.... A standard PC screen takes about 2mp resolution. This will not change much for your 40mp files. Few years ago shooting 20mp was high end. Professionals were praised for their high resolution quality files. Today 20mp is just beh... Nothing has changed but our perception on quality. No customer is watching the figures in an exif file. Only photography nerds do.

I recently got the X-T5 and found, just like you did, that the images were essentially indistinguishable from those from my X-T3. I did not get the X-T5 for the MP but for the IBIS and better autofocus. I doubt Fuji is scamming us but I do believe that packing 40MP onto an APSC sensor has not resulted in better images.

I have just upgraded from 26-40mp and to say I was under-whelmed was a bit of an understatement. I wasn't disappointed totally but I wasn't blown away with the new sensor (X-H2) - however I decided to compare output from Lightroom compared to Capture One - there is a whole world of difference in terms of clarity and sharpness. Capture One wins and IMHO has restored my enthusiasm for upgrading to the X-H2. Even using the "Free" version of Capture One there is no comparison between the output of the two software packages - might be worth you looking at for a review.

I did a few tests between 26mp vs 40mp with a few of the newer lenses, and saw that the 40mp was only slightly sharper... so mushy-looking pixels on 26mp looked slightly less mushy on 40mp. The difference seemed kinda negligible. However, 160mp pixel shift looked great in my tests and made the mushy pixels look fairly crisp (along with more true-to-life colors & tones), and I think the new 56mm lens can still resolve more legible detail at it's best aperture than what 160mp pixel shift offers. The 26mp & 40mp files look muddy in comparison, as should be expected when combining 20 pictures into 1. Maybe you have some IQ settings on your X-H2 that are getting baked into the RAW files. I heard that "High ISO NR" reduces sharpness even at base ISO.

I bought an XT30 for my first camera. Absolutely love it and still have it. I started using an XT3 for professional work and almost bought one last year but I had a hunch that Fujifilm would probably be releasing something this year. I was right. The upgrade from an XT30 to the XT5 made sense to me so that’s why I did it. I can’t say I would have upgraded from an XT3/XT4 if I had started with one of those two cameras initially.

I'm out photographing Falcons in flight with the xt5. Using 150-600mm and 100-400m. The bird tracking is awesome, but I'm undecided about seeing a general soft focus. Maybe its due to ISO or over cast weather. Maybe its from the teleconverter. So yeah it's been a constant list of reasons why I think it's not sharp.

40 Mpx APS-C has the pixel pitch ( density) of a 96 Mpx FF and a 154 Mpx Fuji GFX. Note that with 26 Mpx you had already the pixel pitch of the Sony A7 r IV and V and of the Fuji GFX 100. Many people did not step from yhe Sony riII (42 Mpx) to the rIV (61mpx). With Cmos sensors going higher resolutions , like from 24 to 42 Mpx, allows to remove the AA fikter and therefore shows better the performance of your lens. Xtrans has no AA filter as far as I know. Fuji should propose a XT5 s with 26 Mpx.

Upgrading from the Sony A7R3 to A7R4 (42 - 61mp), a similar % jump in mp, I found I soon had to increase my computer storage capacity and also get a larger / faster memory card. Lightroom slowed down also with the larger files but to overcome this I now carry out all my initial processing using an external SSD drive which speeds things up considerably. This is well worth considering anyway as files download from the memory card much quicker and there is a noticeable improvement in loading and saving files in Lightroom and photoshop. The files are then backed up on my Mac.

I thoroughly enjoyed your video Ian. I upgraded from a Nikon Z II with 47MP to a Sony A7RII A with 61MP. Sadly, I have to admit that I cannot see any difference in detail or resolution. I put this down to my lack of expertise (I’m only a keen amateur and although I’ve been photographing for around 50 years I am certainly no expert). I transferred from Nikon mainly to get access to a wider range of branded and third party lenses and not for the extra megapixels. There are wildlife photographers such as, Mike Lane, who shoot with the Olympus OM 1, 20MP, camera whose photos are pin sharp, incredibly detailed and beautiful. I would therefore agree with you, there is very little or nothing to be gained by upgrading for megapixels alone. I always enjoy your relaxed style of presentation and the beauty of the locations you work in. Keep up the good work. Alun

Thanks for the video comparison. I own a X-Pro 2 and stopped buying the X-pro3 because there was not a good enough improvement. The X-Pro4 is coming and expectation is that it too will have a 40mp sensor similar to the X-T5. I truly think we would be better off sticking to a 24mp or 26mp camera and getting a better lens rather that a new camera. Additionally with the programs like Gigapixel, I think upgrading the program and a new lens will be a better alternative. Thanks for the comparison.

I got a Canon R5 and it products a very sharp image, I took a few photo at a cookout and did some basic editing and my son in law said I don't like it you can the pour's on my skin, lol I believe it is the best camera I ever own...;)

A bit hasty conclusion with three images shot in conditions you wanted to get out of ;) I think there might be some Fujinon lenses that won't resolve over that 40Mp threshold, but I'd be looking more at the smaller pixel wells on that sensor driving the diffraction limit lower than with the 26Mp sensors. Also like someone commented, was IBIS/OiS on or off for the time being and what were the aperture/shutter speed settings for the photos?

Great stuff,food for thought. Upgraded from xt3 to xt5. Main reasons: IBIS, better af, better evf, way better battery life, 40mp for cropping was not the main goal(..). Made some pretty good shots on 18 mp. So the megapixel runway isn't my runway. It is nice to have a complete renewed powerhouse , that also has a Tilting screen instead of the floppy screen. I have no ambition to see myself on the screen,only use it to make photographs,and that it does. Doubted a little while between going back to Sony full frame , but then the xt5 was announced,the whole FujiExperience was more important to me. And yes,I like to pick it up,and easily hold it hours on a stretch with no worries. Just having fun,and produce nice shots( at least for my eyes😊). When the shutter produces its soft sound,it is rewarding to me. Again a prey shot,an I feel I am a lucky guy that I can be the owner of such a piece of technique. Just enjoying it.

Today I made 4 NEF files with one of my like new Nikon D3, 12 MP. One of each pair was put through Photoshop high rez option in ACR, 4x the MP.. Moved to PS and showed the original at 200% and the high rez at 100%. Both were very nice and looked identical. This avoids 40+MP cameras like Nikon Z7 2 and Leica M10R capturing raw without a tripod. Both these are difficult to get max resolution hand held. They look very good until they are observed 100% on computer. Some are sharp, but some are not. Small detail are gone. How many do you need? 12 for most things. 40+ and a tripod for really big prints..

Ian, this is a case of diffraction limited resolution. You made no mention of aperture in the video, but given the apparent depth of field it was probably f/8 or a higher f-number. For the 40MP sensor, the Airy disk will exceed the pixel pitch at f/2.4 and double it at f/4.8. So softness from diffraction will be readily apparent at f/5.6 when viewed at 100%, and maybe at lower f-numbers if one looks hard. So yes, there is no benefit to higher resolution APS-C sensors if one is using the high f-numbers typical of landscape photography because of diffraction. If you repeat the tests make sure to take some shots with a good prime lens at f/2.8 and f/4 for comparison. I think you'll see that the in-focus areas are indeed noticeably sharper at lower f-numbers.

I use a Canon 90D and in the fb group there are complaints about its sharpness. However, most come down to a lens that doesn't have the resolving power to match the 32.5MP or camera movement as more MP show the tiniest twitch. I love the MP because I can crop and print. - Elaine

I think for my use case the GFX 50S 11 is a better use of my cash but a much bigger outlay of course including lenses. If not then its investment in new glass and keep the XT3 which I absolutely love.

I think the telling thing is fujifilm recommending to use a particular lens on that XH2 40mp sensor, i dont think the lenses have enough optical resolution to take advantage of that 40mp sensor - i also dont think that 40mp sensor is developed enough yet either, i think with time fujifilm will optimize that sensor for better output from the XF lenses. For me personally i think they would do better making medium format more accessible to hobbyists - you can clearly see a difference in MF images even when they are posted up on facebook/instagram etc

Thanks for the video. Enjoyed it. It definitely could be the lens in that perhaps the 40 MP sensor just exceeds the detail it is able to deliver. Also, I've always assumed that lenses control sharpness and sensors control detail, so the higher resolution sensor should provide a more detailed image. However, how does one distinguish between sharpness and detail in an image? I think this question should be addressed before moving forward. Oh, as a mostly wildlife and bird photographer, I definitely appreciate the extra MP because I'm always cropping and every little bit gets me the ability to make a better, i.e., larger, print!

I've done a lot of comparison between the (20mp APS-C) Nikon Z FC, (45mp FF) Nikon Z 7ii, and the X-T5. My impression is that the Z7ii and X-T5 are very similar to each other in terms of image detail and sharpness, and both are slightly better then the Z FC. In no way is it a night and day difference between the 20mp camera and the ~40mp cameras, and whether the slight improvement in image quality is worth is is highly subjective. I think any semi-modern camera is fine in terms of image quality, and it's best to choose which one you use based on which one you enjoy using the most based on things like form factor, controls, etc.

Are both images in raw? If not, some jpeg sharpening might be the reason, or how Lightroom processes each raw file by default. In any case, 26 vs 40 mp sounds like a lot but in reality the image is only allowing to crop in about 1.2 times more, in the most ideal conditions. To crop in a more meaningful amount like 2x, we’d need something like the 100mp of the GFX cameras.

Great video, thanks the comparison. There certainly is a point of diminishing return in terms of usable resolution for a given sensor size. I believe that to be in the 16 to 24 megapixel range for APS-C and 30 to 45 megapixel for "full frame". You have to go up in sensor size to get easily visible improvements. But even Fuji's "mini-medium format" is hitting a limit rather soon. Personally, I'm happy with 24MP on my FF camera. I don't need any more than that.

No, there's something wrong with the way Ian conducted the test. I suspect there's something not right with the AF on his new X-H2. Yes, there is a point of diminishing returns with sensor resolution. We're not there yet. I use a Panasonic G9. This is a 20MP micro-4/3 sensor; it has a 80MP high-res sensor shift mode. Across the board, the high-res mode resolves significantly more detail. Yes, this is shooting test charts. What this says is that we're not yet limited by the glass. In fact, taking the diffraction limit as the upper threshold, we're far away from being limited by the optics. As to whether all this resolution is meaningful, it depends entirely on the intended presentation media. I print mostly 8x10, so anything more than 8MP contributes nothing. However, I've also printed very much larger where it's important to see sharp detail nose length away. So no, 40MP isn't "wasted"; it's always better to have more.

I have printed large print prints (easily 40 inches on the long side) from 6MP photos, I've done the same from film, I've done large format film, medium format film and digital, high res full frame sensors, smaller sensors, sensor shift and what not. For every single one of my photos I consider good any resolution beyone 12MP is irrelavant. Oh, and sensor shift does not necessarily show to the line pair resolving power of the glass. But even when comparing a 40MP photo to a 160MP sensor shift shot of the same motive, the additional detail is irrelevant for me. Worse, it only makes the photos more cumbersome without adding anything meaningful. The only reasong I like to be close to the resolving power of the glass is that I can do more cropping. Which helps me since I like to use prime lenses in general life and don't have super long lenses for wildlife (yet). The diffraction limit for the sensor format and lens aperture setting is probably around the low hundreds of MP. It's doubtful that the lens he's using is diffraction limited. However, it's certainly capable of resolving details at more than 40MP with excellent contrast. This is contrary to the experimental results. Fuji isn't lying that the xh2 is 40mp. So something else is likely faulty - the experimental procedure, the equipment under test, etc. Now, if it evolves that Fuji is doing something hanky, that'd be really, really interesting and discovery of which deserves wider distribution.

I remember my disappointment moving from my first fuji (an xt-10) which had a 16 megapixel sensor, to the xt-20 which had a 24 megapuxel sensor and was not as sharp. I wonder whether a better approach to compare the two is, counterintuitively, to down res the higher mp images and then compare for sharpness. On larger sensors, each feature has more pixels, so it it no surprise that the edges look softer. You'd probably have to look at appropriately (tiny) sized features to notice the increase in resolution.

I upgraded from the XT2 to the XH2 and I I am seeing very similar results with my cameras as well. Actually with the lenses I am using specifically the 10- 24, old 23 and 35 1.4 primes, and 55-200, the images look softer with the 40 megapixel sensor especially in outer mid frame and corners. My 24 megapixel Nikon Z6 easily out resolves the 40 megapixel Fuji sensor. The 40 megapixel JPEGs seem to be crisper than the previous Fuji sensors. I’m torn on keeping it or not. Right now seems like it’s just hogging more storage space for no reason.

It doesn't. I have both and took them out for a go at a very detailed tree trunk. I used viltrox 35mm for the nikon and 23mm(35mm) equivalent on the xh2. Nikon at f5 was not as sharp as the fuji at f1.8! The sensor does put out more resolution. Nikon full frame will still beat any apsc in low light and higher iso's. U can't beat the science and physics of full frame light gathering. But at its native base iso of 125, the xh2 with fast glass is amazing. And I'm a die hard Nikon user. The z7ii is a beast but so is carrying around full frame lenses. I can carry 2 excellent fuji zooms and 3 primes and the camera with a lense and still not break my back in a compact 11L wandrd prvke light backpack. Can't do that with all my nikon gear either. Apsc has definitely changed my view by giving me and my clients excellent results by way of Fuji

Big fan of your videos so don't take the following too harsh. With digital photography you can't only think hardware ( the camera ) You also need to think software ( post processing editor ) So downloaded the trial version of DXO Photolab 6 and do the same test. I don't know about the XH line but i was washi washa with the X T3/16-80 until i switched from LightRoom to DXO. I've no interest or links of any kind with DXO ( maybe exept that i'm french as my english prooves ) but i was blown out on how X Trans pattern was demosaicing.

A lack of anti aliasing filter would make a bigger difference than the number of megapixels, which makes data storage and manipulation a bigger pain. Megapixels beyond 20 are mostly a waste unless you're cropping for wildlife. There's also problems with the noise pattern on the X-H2S when shooting at 240 fps. The stacked sensor isn't purely an advantage it seems.

So I am not on Fuji, but I did upgrade way in the past from 24mp to 48mp... and for the most part there is no real difference to sharpness when it comes to images that I get.... BUT... when using for wildlife and doing heavy cropping... there is a difference in actually getting a usable image. I am very curious that Fuji may be not totally honest about their lens compatibility list. It seems that optically the resolving power is not on par for a 40Mp crop sensor. When I heard Fuji would make a high resolution APS-C camera, I was very worried about the existing lens selection on top of what high ISO issues that may come with it, which is why I decided I'm done with Fuji X feeling it ran its course or hit it's practical limit and went back to Nikon for high resolution FX cameras that I prefer for landscapes and portraiture.

I have a very large number of images in my archive from XE2, XE3, XT2 and XH1. Both Lightroom and Capture One. Very happy with prints to A3+ from a Canon Pro 10S from any even with cropping. Very high ISO (low light non-IBIS shots) clean up brilliantly in Topaz DeNoise AI and Sharpen or even Gigapixel can (not every file, but many) allow very detailed much larger prints. After coming back to Fuji after Sony (A7R3) and Leica (APS) I bought an XT5 for the IBIS and screen. Unfortunately I had issues with AF (faces) and especially the viewfinder which was disappointingly noisy and speckled (gain?) in lower light even with frame rate reduced etc. Worse than the XT2, sadly, so I sent it back. I don’t know if it’s a sample issue or general (others do report issues with front focused portraits too) or Firmware but I was quite disappointed. WEX were brilliant as ever and took it back with no quibbles so I bought a mint XH1 from them at way under half the price. Very happy with it.

Hi Ian, I upgraded to XH2 from XT3. I was disappointed with results of XH2 raw, so decided to compare jpeg to raw, I was blown away by the quality of jpeg in comparison to raw, jpeg was so much sharper.. I have over the last month been tinkering with different raw converters ie. Iridient, Adobe, DXO Pureraw all with negative results. The only way I could get detail was to convert in camera with Fujifilm studio raw then save as tiff, I am think it's going to take time for everyone to update their raw converters to match XH2 sensor. Only time will tell.

@@ian_worth I'll join William Davies in his assessment. I have yet to find a raw converter that does as good a job as the jpeg, provided the photo doesn't require too much manipulation in processing. I've noticed this specially for macro shots, where detail is the main goal, without making the image look crispy from sharpening. Oftentimes i can't match the jpeg, specially if you don't look just at detail but tones, gradations. Overall more natural looking and yet very detailed. Before seeing his comment I was going to ask you if you could have a look at in camera jpegs to see if it is so much softer. I am considering this camera mostly for macro shots, and was wondering if you have tried it for that purpose, and of so, do you get more detail? Thanks Cheers from France.

There's issues with doing one off comparisons. Diffraction kicks in on the 40mp sensor somewhere around f4 I would think. Also who knows if Adobe is up to speed yet with the 40mp sensor. Personally I went out and took a bunch of photos like I would normally and just looked at the results. My impression was that the 40mp sensor is smoother and has some of that large format film feeling to it compared to the 26mp sensor. But as I use the sensor more and make larger prints with it over the next year, my opinion could change though it probably won't. But you make a good point, the reasons to upgrade with Fuji right now are the AF and auto mode improvements, the EVF and screens, bigger battery, etc and not so much on the increase in megapixels. 👍🙂

@@ian_worth The thing that always kinda didn't make sense but is true is that even with diffraction the higher megapixels are still sharper all else being equal. I have experienced it myself so I know it's true. i.e. the XT5 with 35mm F2 is sharper at f11 than the XT3 and 35mm f2 at f11. But as long as I'm getting good results I don't worry about it all that much anymore. 🙂🙂 And I looked it up, diffraction starts becoming an issue at about F6.4 on a 40mp sensor, but I'm not going to limit myself. The images look great at F11.

I would just like to briefly note that the X-Trans sensors do without the usual low-pass filter. This makes the image much sharper. You can see this very clearly on edges with high contrasts. The lower the resolution, the more it jumps out at me. Does this make sense? I still keep a Fujifilm X-E2 and X70 with the 16 Mpx sensor and find their images sharper than anything else I've ever had in my hands.

I had the same impression like you, coming from an X-T3 to the X-H2. What I experienced though was, that the RAW-Files from the X-H2 have to be (and can be) processed a little bit more aggresively than the ones from the X-T3. In the end the quality of the X-H2-RAWs for me is now definitely superior.

You found what I just found. I’m hoping it’s just the 50-140 not resolving the 40mp sensor. My XH2s seems to be sharper shooting the same subjects with the same lens. Obviously the XH2s is a 26mp stacked sensor vs the 40mp XH2. This is frustrating to say the least.

Yep? The Fujifilm XT3 will stay with me and since the sensor sizes are the same in both cameras I thought that the photosites got smaller in the XH2 to include those extra megapixels and that could be why it is hard to see the difference. How about the noise though, which of the two cameras tends to show off more noise? Another issue is having to upgrade some lenses that are fine on the XT3 and too soft on the XH2 camera when the new camera was first introduced the mention was to get a new prime with it and now some people are dicovering that some older zooms don't resolve enough for the 40 megapixel to show its resolution, so the cost of upgrading goes up and up. Good review though keep them coming as you use your new XH2, Cheers.

I think the only valid comparison the the POTENTIAL amount of detail that can be achieved after optimum processing. All the LR import defaults are not necessarily equivalent between imported RAW files from different sensors. Up and down resolution treatments to try and compare files is also fraught with difficulty. Generally with more pixels you have more processing headroom which gives you more flexibility, even if you never print or display to the limits that the resolution allows.

I have both Nikon z6 and the fuji xh2. Bought some inexpensive but very sharp viltrox lenses for both. I did some non scientific direct comparison shots of a tree trunk and Fuji does in fact put out higher resolution than a 24 Megapixel sensor and that includes a full frame comparison. I'm a die hard Nikon user and very aware of the light gathering capabilities of a full frame sensor. Apsc can't beat the high iso performance of full frame in low light. That being said, the xh2 at base iso with fast glass is nothing less than amazing! The 40mp sensor is awesome with good glass. And mind you I used the cheapy chappy viltrox 13mm 1.4 and the 23 with excellent results. Got 2 Sigma too just for giggles also great out put resolving that 40mp sensor. Don't know what this gentleman did to get flipped results but my xh1 nor my xt2 can beat it either in apples to apples comparisons. Just my 2 cents

Think it also depends upon the light quality. On my Sony A9 20 something mega pixel it’s pretty comparable with the Sony A7R5 with 60mpx, but in poor light one notices the difference and also I can crop in on the larger sensor and still get decent quality. For wildlife in middle England when it’s dark most of the year that’s important. But I also put good glass on the front of the body. I didn’t find my Nikon D850 better than the D500 but wonder if there is an element of operator error on my part too

I have the canon R7 and M6 mark II and you need a really sharp lens like the 300mm to resolve the high density sensor from my experience. So your correct I believe in saying the lens your using can’t resolve that 40 megapixel sensor 😉

Very interesting. I was introduced to mirrorless cameras through some pretty humble cameras, the Canon SX40-70 series and the Leica V-Lux 4 and 114. I was especially impressed with what my SX60hs and Leica 114 could do and I now shoot with the Lumix G9. I have friends who use the Nikon D850 and it's hard not to be impressed with some big sensor results. But, if you're not shooting under low light conditions very often smaller sensor cameras can give a very good account of themselves, especially where your back and bank account are concerned.

I think we’re just at the maximum pixel density for half/full frame sensors and the resolving power of even the sharpest glass lenses. Where I think the next jump in resolution will come is from high megapixel count sensors utilizing advanced binning algorithms. Even that though will be incremental at best. Moral of the story is at this point cameras are so good it’s reached the run them into the ground before upgrading point imo. I.e. a camera that took fantastic pictures 2 years ago isn’t all of a sudden not going to take good photos…

As shown in the latest videos of Omar Gonzales, Mark Denney, Kirk Williamson etc... comparing new 40MP sensor to older 26MP, increase in details is negligible. If someone's going to buy XT5/XH2 with the expectation of details increase like in case 24MP of Nikon D750/Z6 to 46MP of D850/Z7, then will be disappointed. So far it looks like the smaller sensor format is, the smaller benefits of more pixels are. Borderline for APSC is probably 26-30 MP. If something, more resolution of XT5/XH2 offers us more detail retention, when cropping or printing large, but minimal detail increase.

What I am interested in is a clean ( noise free ) image at higher iso (3200, 6400 ) which I think these new bodies does not provide ( but feel free to correct me if it is otherwise ). I'm curious what the image difference would be with 200mm f2 between xt4, xt5 and xh2s...

LR isn't the best choice for image quality comparisons. Capture One is better for Fujifilm files. An object with many vibrant and different colours and small details may show different result. If expectations are too high, the results may be disappointing anyway. The assumption that it isn't a 40MP sensor - only upscaled - is just ridiculous.

I'm doing a Capture one comparison this week so stay tuned for that. BTW it wasn't an assumption, it was a question? I said in the video - "my question to you is - 1, is it actually a 40mp sensor.....???" or 2 is it that the glass isn't good enough to resolve much more detail.... ??? I couldn't think of any other reasons that I wasn't seeing a vast improvement in IQ. Like you and many others mentioned, it could be software related, hence the reason I'm working on another comparison video 👍👍 Hope that helps

Ian, I agree with Benjamin K below you need to use Capture One as your engine in opening your raw files, I won't elaborate here, but there is a massive difference and I work in silicon valley with friends who are photographers and work for Adobe and they use Capture One. I have been a Fuji user for many years, I output my Capture One files from the app and open them in PS and edit similar to you. Try a free version I think you'll like it.
