Will an older Fujifilm lens work on the new X-H2 and X-T5 cameras? Or, do you need to use one of their optimized lenses? I answer that question and much more in today's video.

Well done. I especially like the fact that you compared totally unedited RAF files! Many reviewers don't do that, or at least don't state to what extent images were edited prior to comparison. And good advice about the lenses and the creative aspect of photography! I went from an XT2 to the XT5 because I do a lot of BIF and wind up cropping in very closely on many images. The higher resolution of the XT5 makes for a huge improvement in those photos :). Cheers, and Thanks!

A great video Pete. I have wondered about upgrading my X-T3 to the X-T5 more for IBIS than the sensor but I wondered how the lenses would perform on the new sensor. I would not want to start replacing perfectly good lenses if there is little need. I believe you have answered that question 👍. Some good books in your library too.

A real pleasure to watch your video, Pete. You are among the few KZbin Fujifilm content providers who don't make false assumptions and understand what they are talking about. The list which Fujifilm released in no way states that the lenses not on the list will not work well with the 40 megapixel sensor. Some will not resolve the 40 at max open aperture but will do so stopped down. Others will at no point resolve the 40 megapixels, but perhaps 34, just to give a number. I just bought the old XF 23mm f1.4 a couple of months ago and love the overall look of its resolution on my X-T5 or on my old X-T2. It is splendid on both. Like you I care more about the creative possibilities of a lens than its technical parameters. Since I don't care that much about autofocus, I have been shooting with the X-T2 up to now and consider the X-T5 the first new X-T model to give me everything I want. Longer battery use, excellent IBIS, the photocentric 3 way screen and of course a sensor which gives me excellent print quality with its 40 mpx. It is a step up which makes sense, while the step from 24 to 26 mp never appealed to me, giving no major creative advantage.

Good Stuff Pete. Heres my summation, and bare in mind my Backbone is GFX. With the XT5, the new 23mm is my go-to. . I'd compare the sharpness to my G series 110mm any day. Super crisp, fast focus, and super sharp. That being said, I also have the Sigma 56 1.4 for portrait. No slouch either. At 400% in LR, its really tough to find flaws. I think Fujifilm is just procuring best intention. To get the absolute best performance from the new sensor, yes, there is glass that will entertain the quality, however, The older native glass and third party glass perform really well.

I've even noticed my old Nikkor lenses resolve better on my X-T5, even though the camera is clearly resolving beyond the limits of those old lenses. When comparing center sharpness, stopped down.. I bought the X-H2 + XF150-600mm kit because I like to photograph birds. Not so much birds in flight so I thought having 40Mpx would be a better advantage. The speed of the X-H2S isn't as necessary for me as when using continuous shooting I often use 5fps. It's enough. I kept my old kit, an X-T4 + XF100-400mm. In fact with the new kit I am able to take pictures that were not possible before, especially considering that bird photography is often cropped. And it's great to have 600mm and 40Mpx. Both make the difference. I live in a tropical country, and despite the new lens being darker, here we don't lack light and sun, even in winter. Not to mention the ease of AF with bird recognition, which helps even more. I'm happy with the new equipment. Thanks for the video! Excellent considerations!

I’m an Xpro2 user, and planned to add XT5 as my second body, and you’re on point by saying that the Autofocus performance should be the main factor because my Xpro2 had experience focus hunt and trapped in the bokeh island on the 33 1.4 quite frequently..and since my XPro2, 23 1.4 and 56 1.2 are almost 6 years old now, i also add the 18 and 33 1.4 optimized lens for future proofing as I don’t tens to switch gear as frequently

This was a really informative video. You can definitely see the difference with the “optimized” lens but it was nice to see photos taken with the older lens still seem to benefit from the new sensor. I’ve seen other posts elsewhere indicating images from the X-T5 are softer in general, and all the references to older lenses not taking advantage of the new sensor. That left me unsure when it comes to considering the X-T5 as an upgrade to the X-T3. Your video shows a different view. Thanks. Pick me Pete 📷😁

This video came up in my recommendations and I was interested to see what you thought. It’s interesting that Fuji are selling the X-T5 with the 16-80 lens even though it’s not on the recommended list! What do you need to deliver in order to satisfy yourself and your client? That’s always the most crucial question. And if your final output can in any way reproduce the extra detail, then with the right post processing, that extra crispness, that extra detail, can add realism that viewer may well feel, even if they don’t understand technically the difference. If you need to punch in on a batch of images because you got caught between focal lengths, then that extra detail can save you such that you end up with clean vs muddy final crops. In a perfect studio world where your making dreamy, low contrast art prints, there the extra detail likely won’t matter. But for many, it’s great to see the additional megapixels offer some obvious clarity differences that could easily come in handy. Thanks for doing the comparison.

This is an interesting video examination of this situation. I have an X-T5 as my first interchangeable lens digital camera. Now, I got the camera with the 16-80mm f/4 kit lens, not 40mp optimized. It works great, way sharper than anything I shot on film before, and plenty of image quality to work with. I am a hobbies in photography though, I enjoy making cool photos and using cool gear. I am planning on getting what is often called Fujifilm's sharpest X lens, the 90mm f/2, because it's a focal length that I have not used before, it's a technological marvel, and I want to challenge myself to make awesome photos with it. But I don't have it yet, what I do have for now is, a $28 adapter to put my 1970s and 80s Canon FD lenses on my 2022 Fujifilm X-T5... Yeah, I can tell that they are softer, I can tell that they have chromatic issues, I can tell you for certain that getting pixel perfect focus with them is anything but easy without an optical viewfinder. But I can also tell you that making awesome photos with my old, familiar, film lenses on my new digital camera is a whole lot of fun. I often shoot them in BW, I find that they appear quite a bit sharper when the chromatic issues are eliminated. I also got a Rokinon 300mm f/6.3 Catadioptric lens to challenge myself to use the donut shaped boke in a positive way. Many people complain about the donuts and soft rendering of catadioptric/reflex/mirror lenses getting in the way, but to me it's just another cool tool, and I'm quite happy to have it in my bag of tricks now too. Very fun, highly recommend it, definitely not 40.2MP optimized though. I do want to get some of the optimized lenses, but they are not necessary to get great photos, and I'm very glad I learned that lesson before getting a lens of Fujifilm's list of 40.2MP optimized lenses. For scientific photography, getting the most optically perfect lens you can may be quite important; in the creation of great photos that you will look back on in 20 years and say, "I love this one," optical perfection is not the answer. That being said, good glass is quite nice and does have some advantages, just don't let those advantages get in the way of making great photos.

I also bought an xh2 with the 16-80. What I don't get is, why would you tout this amazing new 40mp sensor, but ship it with a lens that can't resolve all of it? Obviously, it's so you go and buy the better lenses. optimized and non optimized means nothing when you get a soft kit lens. I just wish fuji did better, it would make me more eager to spend money on their sometimes over priced lenses.

@@Adrian-wd4rn I would not be surprised if the camera market is much like the printer market. Printer companies don't profit on selling printers. they make there money on the ink. That being said, I do understand where you are coming from. I've been looking at that 90mm f/2 for a while now. It's a length I don't have in a prime, and I would like to try it out. I just have not been able to bring myself to spend the $$$ on it. I've been using glass from the 70s and 80s on my X-T5 for a while now. Have to be creative with what I can resolve, to make up for the details that I can't resolve with this setup.

Pete -- thanks for calming things down a bit. I'm in the middle of a Fujifilm "reset", trading my GFX50S II and some lenses (plus an X-T4), for for a pair of X-T5s. As much as I love the GFX lenses and files, the camera is just not responsive enough for a long term project I'm in the middle of, and I also need two bodies at hand when I'm shooting. Fuji's "list" is a bit of an unforced error which, while being technically correct has, as you point out, resulted in far more speculation and uncertainty than actionable information. The 40MP sensor will give me more flexibility for cropping, and the X-T5 operational improvements should allow more consistent results. Central to the project will be the 16-55 f/2.8, the 8-16 f/2.8, and the 16mm f/1.4. I also have the 16-80 so in the near future, when I have some "nerd time" available, I plan on running some resolution chart tests at f/5.6.

Great review and comparison! Thank you! I have my own channel and I am thinking of replacing my all-purpose Canon DSLR (5Dm3) with the XT-5. I already own a GFX100S and love it but want the retro dials of the XT-5. Was looking at the xf 16-80mm but it is not on the 20-lens list. Good to know they work fine and the difference to me is negligible. I'll be using it for all-purpose shoots and street photography, which I sell on my website. What an objective assessment. On my XT5 I use both a lens on the so-called optimisation list and one that is not. Both lenses perform well on my XT5. The lens not on the list is the 18-55, which I use for walks and family days out. The lens on the list is the 16-55, which always performs well and did so in my XT4 too. In my humble opinion, the so-called optimised list is solely a marketing ploy to get people to upgrade their older lenses and generate more sales. Ignore it, a lens not on it will still perform well. Thanks for the view you expressed.

Excellent review. Very balanced. I would love to see a comparison of the X-H2S to the 40 MPixel sensor. It always makes me smile when people put on a "mist" filter to detract the resolution of the image or adding artificial "grain" after spending big dollars trying to get the highest resolution and cleanest image. As far as I am concerned, it is the image itself, which is of paramount importance, rather than the tech pixel peeping. After all how many people criticise the Mona Lisa for "resolution"? LOL I also have switched to Fuji since 2012, but what concerns me most is the AF, however I am too heavily invested in the Fuji system to jump ship, and then I couldn't decide which way to go anyways.

Too many comments to read them all searching for the comparison that did not seem to have been done and the one that folks that might have concerns might have considered the most important. Take the X T5 body and then do the same image(s) using eg 16-80 (to me for most folks a go to lens which is still light and compact) old version and the same lens of the optimized version (if there is one -- I have my oldie but goodie -- and see what if any differences can be seen when using the X T5 body. Great video. While the results show the xt5 to be sharper that doesn't necessarily prove it's anything to do with the glass or sensor. What you need to rule out is if this is really just the software over-sharpening the xt5 files when they demosaic the raw to an image. I would try this test again with Fuji xraw studio as well as lightroom and dxo to see if it's just capture one over-sharpening the raw on the xt5.

@@PeteCocoPhoto Yes. And here is a quick idea on the same path. Use the raw files that you already used in the video and: Apply more sharpening in software to the X-T4 images and see if you can make them look just as sharp and nice as the images that you already have from X-T5 (keep them unchanged). (And as I have commented, don't rely only on looking at 'previews' in Capture One). Then your viewers get to know whether they need to buy a new camera (X-T5) or can just apply a little bit more sharpening (to X-T4).

X-T5 and my 70-300 paired great together, but I gotta say, now that I don’t have the 70-300 anymore, I do realize the reach wasn’t enough. The Tamron 150-500 isn’t optimized for the camera and I honestly don’t care. It doesn’t render the lens useless if it’s a tad bit softer than another lens. So long as it’s sharp enough and I can get the shot, then I’m happy.

Fujifilm basically gave us some insight on the characteristics of their lenses which more info is always welcome. For people who hunt absolute sharpness and quality, it is a pretty useful list, and for people who already own many lenses that are not on that list max reconsider upgrading (which could save them money). great video, We work with Fuji cameras in and out of the studio, have both the X-T3s and an X-T5. Future fuji lens purchases will most likely be the newer lenses from recommended list, but we are not going to replace any we already have. Some things on the list such as the 10-24 F/4 WR lens being on the list but the older 10-24 not even though the optical formula is the same, is strange (granted the older 10-24 is discontinued) or the XF 35 F/2 being on the list but the XC 35 F/2 with same optical formula is not on the list. The 26MP from the X-T3 is fine for all of the work I do (mostly studio portraiture) the 40MP X-T5 was purchased for the AI auto focus, bird/animal detect and the ability to crop more in post for one of our photographers who uses the camera for wildlife photography too. No client has ever asked which camera or lens was used when the photographs or prints are given to them. On one shoot I took a couple of pictures with an old 16MP X-T10 and a 7artisans 55mm F/1.4 manual focus lens and when the client was shown the photos, they asked for one of the photos taken with a setup worth about £200.. the contact sheets we supplied to them, did not say what camera or lens the photos were taken on. TLDR, the output is what matters not what you use to make it, if you have to zoom to 300% to see a difference I would not worry about that difference

I’ve been trying to find a good comparison between these two camera for days now. Thank you for making this, sincerely. Lots of subjective opinions out there, and even worse, opinions made by just looking at the spec sheets without owning both cameras. Or if someone did shoot both side by side, they wouldn’t be zooming in on the files enough to make out a difference after KZbin compression. I shoot and print at large sizes, I frequently crop liberally, and needed a video like this to show me if it would be worth investing in the 40mp sensors. Especially when a XT4 can be bought on the cheap now. This was exactly what I needed. Unfortunately I’ll likely be jumping to the X-H2. Pricy, but I miss the flip out lenses from my Canon days. The images that you show in Capture One are previews, generated by Capture One at less quality to be faster to work with during editing, whereas the full quality is generated when exporting final results. I am a Capture One user. It has annoyed me that I can not get the full quality in the images while I edit them. (There exist some tweaks and techniques to get closer to max quality, and that involve running 'proofing' etc, and it usually works only on some magnification (%) levels, but the problem has never been really solved). So to me it seems like a suboptimal choice to look at previews in Capture One in order to assess the infinitesimal differences in sharpness and detail.

I shall not draw any negative conclusions about your work and your video. It looked convincing and you managed to convey useful information. Maybe the blur problem is mostly a problem in other magnifications than 100%. Idea for further tests. I think you may have the point of the Fujifilm list backwards. The point of the list is not to show @0:15 on which body the lenses will perform best; rather, it is to identify which Fujifilm lenses will allow the X-H2 and X-T5 to perform best. That's why they released this list when those cameras came out: so buyers would know which lenses they could expect to perform best with these newly released cameras. It also means that people who attached their older Fuji lenses would not be too disappointed by the results of using those lenses on the newer cameras, since the 40 MP sensors on these bodies will be more sensitive to weaknesses in lenses than the older and lower-resolution Fujifilm sensors. That's also why the most valuable comparison you could provide would be between test photos taken on the 40MP sensor by lenses which are on the list compared with lenses which are not.

@@PeteCocoPhoto Btw did you compare same old lenses on both cameras? I think it would be better to compare old lense + xt4 and new optimized lense + xt5. Because by comparing same lense on xt4 and xt5 this is quit obvious that xt5 would perform slightly better sharpness :D Main question is how much new optimized lense differs from old one. Thnx

Then there are lenses not on the Fuji list of opimtized lenses which are puzzling. XF 27mm WR is on the list but the non-WR version isn't. Optically the same exact lens only difference is the weather sealing.

You zoomed in closer on the X-T4 images to get them the same size (due to 26mp vs 40mp) so the image that is zoomed in more is always going to look softer! Not an apples to apples comparison.

Has anyone seen a comparison that actually tests the lenses and not the camera bodies? These tests just validate that the higher res sensor is in fact higher resolution. I think a more effective test would have been to test these two lenses on only the xh-2 at 35mm f/5.6 and then see what happens. Even that would be skewed though because primes almost always perform better than zooms at equal focal lengths.

The problem is there is no way to test it that I can figure out. At the time I did this vid, I felt this was the best way to try and make sense of it. Honestly, though, as a professional, I could care less about whether a lens is on their list. I don't think you should worry too much about it.

Not much of a difference between 24 and 26mp, but when you go from 26mp to 40mp the difference becomes quite noticable when you start to crop.

@@PeteCocoPhoto Your video does a good job clearly pointing out the difference (26-40) even with lenses that are not "Optimized"! If you are looking at a new camera, it might be a good option, if you already have a Fuji T1,T2,T3,T4 is it worth the upgrade? Maybe.... What ever you do, you can't lose. The T5 sounds like a good choice, and may prove itself to be a real winner.

I stopped at 4:06 and I'll tell you why. Although the XT5 (below) looks better on the orange texture, if you glance to the right and check out the red letter 'M' (and even the black vertical line to the left of it) it looks worse (softer) than on the XT4 (above) which looks more in focus, sharper, better clarity. This is why tests like this are incredibly difficult. It looks like you have not nailed focus ABSOLUTELY CRITICALLY IDENTICAL on both setups which then makes any observation nullvoid if not. The difference here looks much more like focus placement (even slightly) than a difference in observable resolution. Even if you nailed focus PERFECT, I would expect the XT5 to perhaps be slightly better, but nothing mindblowingly better, a gentle nudge of the sliders (to which no real ill effect would take place) would likely catch up. You also have to take into consideration that 100% is different on each camera, if forcing the XT4 to go to the same zoom amount at 100% on the XT5 then it is more like judging the XT4 at 150-200% or something, making it pretty unfair. If you want to judge 'fairly' then make sure you're not zooming pass a 26mp 100% threshold, that makes more sense to me.
@PeteCocoPhoto

Thanks Eddy for the insights. As I mentioned, tests like this are always gonna have flaws but I did my best to keep it fair as best as I could. Having said that, I nailed the focus in exactly the same spot for each photo and with a tripod.
@SummersSnaps
@SummersSnaps Жыл бұрын
@@PeteCocoPhoto If focus was exactly the same each shot then how do you account for the difference at 4:06 where the XT4 looks to be sharper, clearer on the right than the XT5 (which you chose not to discuss)? Changing the camera on the tripod, different sized bodies, position of sensor etc, nailing focus EXACTLY (even a SLIGHT difference could account for mixed results). We're talking lab stuff here in order to really judged IQ differences. You did your best but I think 4:06 highlights the problem such home tests present. Please do note none of this takes away from the point that the 40mp will most likely have perceived resolution benefits (how can it not?!), but at this point in time we have to discuss sensibly those benefits, because its not all a pro list, there are some cons. With 40mp we get larger files, buffer fills quicker, storage issues, worse higher ISO performance etc. And if its a choice for the company moving forward I kinda think the better tech is stacked sensors (at more affordable pricing) than this emperors new clothes 40mp sensor.

@@PeteCocoPhoto Sorry, I can come across a bit of a dick at times and I don't mean to. For me, one of the first things I do when comparing optics or whatever is scrutinize the entire frame to see what is amiss. I noticed immediately the increase in texture/resolution of the orange book cover (as you pointed out) and started to scan the rest of the frame to see if everything else was on par and equal. When I noted the right side looking better than the left side I immediately knew that even a 1mm difference in focus/depth can account for a lot. This is why there are so many videos flying around on this subject matter where some see a difference, some do not etc etc. Slight focus differences will either put the two sensors on equal footing (roughly) or make one look significantly improved over the other.

I know the MP are not always important but ( it's fine to have 40mp) you can crop images more than with 26mp and with less losing quality...It's impresive how X-T5 looks much better detailed on some pictures even with old 35mm. And this about lenses which is optimized and which not I think this is more politics ...There are no problems like FUJIFILM say.

I'm a little confused by the comparisons. The X-T5 has nearly double the MP than the X-T4. You're zooming in 200% on the images in the comparisons. With this, wouldn't you clearly see the difference in quality (optimized or not) just in the different camera's resolution sizes. 🤷🏻‍♂️
@PeteCocoPhoto
@PeteCocoPhoto Ай бұрын
Any test of this nature is going to be flawed because you can only test an "optimized" lens on two diff bodies, and one has to be a lower res Fuji otherwise you're just testing the same 40mp sensor against itself. honestly, I think Fuji was really silly to even make that list and make such a big deal about it. All it's done is confuse people lol
