I'd been interested in the Maeving RM1 for quite some time and I eventually get on the bike. It's a great looking machine and really does tick many boxes, particularly for the urban commuter. Maeving is a British success story and I do wish them well, great bunch and was nice to meet them at the factory in Coventry...

I would say that you did the most realistic test of a battery bike I’ve seen or read. “Fit for purpose” is key. You made no excuses for performance just laid it out as to what it was designed for. For its designed purpose it hits the mark. As you said it also has a fit and finish missing from other brands. I like the removable batteries, something that I deem important. I doubt, however, that I’ll see them anytime soon in the US. I hope they succeed in the market place.

Hi JW, it was my first time on one and I did enjoy it. There's no point in comparing it to a touring bike with a 30l fuel tank or 200hp for example but for a second bike to run around on I think it's great. The design is lovely and I think it's a bike you'd look back at as you walked away after parking it. Some won't like it of course but the electric change isn't for everyone (I do have reservations myself) but for its design purpose its great and importantly it's selling. 52 units sold in August, another 40ish in September, good for a 4 year old company!

Great review. If this bike had a top end of 60mph I’d buy one tomorrow, it looks fantastic and it’s made in England which is excellent, we’ve got so used to buying cheap from China or wherever else pays their workers 25p a day, we think it’s the norm, it isn’t, get your hand in your pocket and buy British. I think I’ll buy one and hope the battery/motor can be upgraded in a year or two. I love it.

During the industrial revolution workers in the UK got paid 75p per week. I say this because you simply do not have a realistic grasp on how economics works. Every country has to go through certain hardships in order to become a prosperous nation. It very much seems like you think that some countries who lagged behind in the past get to magically wave a magic wand and skip certain steps.

It's good to see electric motorcycles being taken seriously. This is certainly more of a "motorbike with an electric motor" than it is a "bicycle with electric assistance". However, it is too much of a styling exercise. If I used it in town, I'd want somewhere to sling some panniers or fit a top box. You can't nip to the shops on something with no luggage capacity. I'd genuinely be interested in an electric bike. However, I'd want 70 mph top speed, the ability to cruise at 50 mph, range of 100 miles with sensible riding, and space for a pillion, all at a price comparable to say an Enfield 350. We're still a long way from there, but there's more progress every year.
@MindfulMotorcyclist
@MindfulMotorcyclist Жыл бұрын
Hi Mike, I agree with most of what has been said. Although if you remove the second battery there is storage in the 'fuel' tank area, even a single battery range of 40 miles would permit nipping to the shops. Other points like 70 mph, cruising speed, pillion seat etc are all required. It's also £6k, the same as a Royal Enfield Interceptor let alone a 350...
@mikefule330
@mikefule330 Жыл бұрын
@@MindfulMotorcyclist Prices will come down relatively if not in absolute terms, and range and power will go up. I mentioned the Enfield 350 as it is just about the cheapest petrol bike capable of 70 mph, cruising comfortably at 50 mph 2 up etc. I currently ride a Guzzi V7 ii, but spent many years on a 250 single.

Hi Nigel, thanks for the comment. With me living out in the proverbial sticks (or in a small regional city at least), I don't think it quite works and at £7k its a little expensive, I mean that's more than an Interceptor in a nice colour or Kawasaki Ninja 650. It's a really nice effort however and I think people who want this kind of thing would be advised to check out Maeving (which by the way means 'To Maeve - to strive or achieve')!

Why would anyone pay for a tracker, the police pick and choose which crimes they pursue and there's no guarantee that they will even attempt to get your bike back, even if you have video of them stealing it and have it's location after the theft. The police are just not interested.
@MindfulMotorcyclist
@MindfulMotorcyclist Жыл бұрын
I purchased a tracker (not from Maeving as I own a different bike), it has other features like checking battery discharge, tells you if the bike has been moved etc. If someone stole my bike and didn't disable the tracker then I would probably go to the location to attempt to find the bike, observe the 'armed' 😁 robbers having informed the police ahead of time regarding the threat. Then hopefully they would attend the call. In reality I don't own a bike which is worth stealing to strip for parts (BMW GSA 1250 for example) so my bike would likely be stolen for a joy ride or by an opportunist. They might dump the bike in a hedge which would allow me to recover it. There are some cases where it might work in your favour...

This is a great review. I live in rural Somerset and the RM1 isn't designed for that use case. The RM1S however with a reported 80 mile range and 70mph top speed is spot on. It covers 95% of my trips, and I have my ICE car for the other 5%. I've put my deposit down for one... With the RM1S you can also charge direct into the bike, and I believe they are bringing out an adapter later this year so you can charge it off public infra like supermarkets and service stations. Makes it a no brainer - the monthly cost of buying it on credit is about on par with the cost of fuel I'll save.

It's a very pretty bike. That said, the speed is where it is lacking. I'm currently riding an Onyx Cty 2 (that's an electric moped for those who don't know) and it does up to 50 mph, and I'm able to use bike lanes. Also, where I live in the States, is extremely hilly. My 9 mile commute is a heck of a drain for my Onyx. Still, the Onyx is holding up. Mind you, I weigh 220lbs, or 100 kg. So, man am I putting the Onyx through it's paces when I get on it. $8,900+ for a Maeving? $3,600+ for an Onyx? I do like the look of the Maeving. If the speed could be improved, I'd be very interested. For now, my eyes are looking at Sondor's Meta Cycle for $6,500+. All the best to the guys and gals at Maeving. It really is a pretty bike. So pretty...
@MindfulMotorcyclist
@MindfulMotorcyclist Жыл бұрын
Hi Paul, thanks for the comment. Good that you mentioned the performance of electric in hilly terrain as I don't think most take this into consideration. The stated range is always tested on flat ideal conditions. The main problem with the Maeving is probably price but then again it's unashamedly a bit more expensive and I think the quality of the materials used does justify this. They are experimenting with software updates to the battery/controller and also changing out the tyres to an 18inch item to improve pick up. You might see incremental improvements from these actions but I guess a new motor/battery combo would be needed for a bigger bump up in performance. A more pressing concern for you based on location would be the fact that they don't have any dealerships in your region and so even if a bike was shipped to you ongoing support would be problematic. Nice to see interest for the Maeving from across the pond tho! Thanks

I largely agree with you. This thing is overpriced per the power to the point of being delusional. 45 mph in 2022 is inexcusable. If it's only intended for urban use then fair enough, but the price should reflect that. Geez.

Honestly don't see the point of this bike; too slow, a limited range, but if I understood the battery packs, you can effectively only charge at home? You can't charge at your local supermarket charge point? Is that right? And £1k difference between one or two batteries? Who is going to spend £6k for a single battery version? Don't get me wrong, I fancy an electric bike; I have two EV cars already. At the other extreme of course you have the new Energica Experia for £27k, I could buy a BMW K1600 GTL for that price. If they sold 100 of these in September, fair play, but in my view a novelty item.

Hi Dexradio, I think they've gone for style and a really high build quality as a priority which appeals to some. The batteries are removable and yes it's correct you cannot charge at the local Lvl2 charger, it's 240v only. I also think the price is rather high but it is a high end product. It a nice looking bike, but it does look like something from the 60's 70's era of bikes. Probably because of the style, but if you put this up against a moped from the 60's and early 70's I doubt you could see much difference. My dad had a 1964 Garelli 49cc moped and this very much reminds me of it. OK, so you are 80kg, and I am 180kg so I am guessing this wouldn't go very far with me on i, even with 2 batteries.

Hi Tony, thanks fore the comment and the question. I was also a little sore that I didn't put my name down for one of these before the increase, everyone loves a bargain haha. With regard to the twin battery comment we can deduce that the battery weighs 6kg (in single battery config bike is 111kg and double is 117kg) therefore I doubt it has any meaningful impact on the handling. I expect rider weight will be a greater consideration for the acceleration. Handling wise it feels along the lines of an electric bicycle not a motorbike to me anyway. The battery connection I think I showed in the video when I walked around the bike, it's quite solid actually with a locating pin that the battery slides down into and that then aligns the terminals. I think the pin which must be around 5mm diameter is strong enough but I guess like every new product it requires the test of time! Cheers.

RAM Mia 1200 watt Scooter. Made in China and top allowable powere without license or registration here in Costa Rica. Without Residency no license possible, so make do with this. Will do 56 KPH though in 3rd Mode. There is a 4th mode that should take it to about 70 KPH. Apparently cutting a white or yellow wire from the controller will give full power and speed. There are some importers that age getting imports here with more power. Like a gas moped with 110 cc 4 stroke engine, 6 HP, 4 speed automatic transmission and will do 80 KPH. Only 50 cc 2.2 HP and 35 KPH is stated legal. But they are getting around it and selling as legal without license or registration. I'm good at 50 to 60 KPH as only 2 highways here allow more than 60 KPH. It is the ability to go faster uphill. I consider any hill limiting me to less than 30 KPH a NO GO. kzbin.info/www/bejne/nXrKmKyKdr94jbs

I switched off at “Top speed 45mph.” Bloody hell, most 50cc scooters will do 50 and a 125 would be like a rocket next to this impractical and massively overpriced gimmick.
@MindfulMotorcyclist
@MindfulMotorcyclist Жыл бұрын
There's two arguments that are used against this. 1) in an expanded ULEZ London commute (think of this as the bikes target market) where the max speed is 20 or 30 mph why would you need to go faster or indeed want to? 2) a high torque electric motor will get you to said speed much faster than ringing the neck of a 50cc. This is safer in traffic. 3) cost per mile is much lower than petrol especially when you charge your bike in your office 😅 Final point is fair it is expensive but that hasn't stopped people from ordering it... Thanks.

@@MindfulMotorcyclist Fair enough. But the first rule of branding is that you shouldn’t need to get a briefing to get it. It should work either by being unique and memorable or clearly state what it does / is. This name seems like one you’d forget or confuse or spell wrong. Not a good choice

@@MindfulMotorcyclist I understand the appearance is subjective but for me personally I don’t think the colour combo goes and the bit in the middle looks out of place in regards to the rest of the bike almost like it was made from bits from many things . May I ask how much they cost for this model? I ride a Yamaha r6 but have had many bikes . I understand thinks will go electric at some point and have no problem if they sound and look rite as well as they have the power and mileage I am used to or better . I think we are a long way off still on electric cars and bikes Also I think it’s dangerous to have something on the road so slow as you need some power to get out of trouble and to keep up with traffic I feel the same for some 50cc and 125cc bikes for the same reason

Maeving have put too small a motor in it. A 4kw (28mph) is suitable for a 16 Yr old. Up to 11kw for a 17 Yr old. This is 3kw with 125cc licence requirements as it's not restricted. No need to go full 11kw but 6-8kw would be more realistic.
@MindfulMotorcyclist
@MindfulMotorcyclist Жыл бұрын
Hi Kevin, thanks for your comment. I think Maeving know exactly what they are doing. The power is what it needs to be for the application which is urban travel. Without putting the production costs up too much and thus the selling price up north of 10K. You'd also need to up the brakes and suspension if you doubled the kw output. Don't think 16 year old, think fund manager commute in the City and your closer to the mark of their typical customer.

This is the problem, the current cost of electricity has doubled over the last year and we all know prices on energy never go backwards only up. So by the time everyone goes electric, the price will keep going up until it's not really viable. The fact that less moving parts mean cheaper servicing and reliability should be better, but the price of electricity will far outway its practically . And the 45 mph limit on a £10,000 bike is not really a good selling point. The only selling point left is image or street cred and this has neither, so it's doomed from the beginning.
