A few small corrections from a Greek: 1) His disagreement with the government wasn't over his property but over the crown's property. The thing is, there is no crown in Greece, there hasn't been one in more than half a century. All its properties were requisitioned by the government. 2) He was, indeed, a gold medal winner at the 1960 olympics, however the other two members of the team, Odysseas Eskitzoglou and George Zaimis, as well as their instructor Paul Elvstrøm, are almost never mentioned, even though they were just as important to the win. 3) Constantine wasn't against a coup so long as it was supportive of the monarchy's interests. The only reason for the hal hearted counter coup was that the colonels didn't cater to his demands. Not to mention the fact that he single handedly created the instability that led to the coup by meddling with politics as well as his efforts to restore the monarchy post 1974 by making contact with a few of dictator Ioannides' allies. 4) The reason he was not allowed to return to Greece was that he refused to adopt a surname which is a necessity for any and all Greek citizens and thus had no passport. Conveniently enough when he asked his Danish relatives for a passport he "magically" found a surname to have on it.

Your are totally wrong and unfortunately out of populism, Tatoi it's not a state's property but a private property of this family! Secondly, in a country that any "refugee" is coming without any document for the former head of state lacking a surname was not a problem and was not prohibited of course to enter Greece, his citizenship was revoked by Andreas Papandreou government, actually by actions of the notoriou Euaggelos Venizelos only because they wanted to appease their electoral base and that happened jus in...1994, 20 years after the plebiscite closed the matter for ever. Constantine's move against Junta was the only resistance action ever took place with the exception of Panagoulis effort to assasinate Papadopoulos. In the danish passport he had not a surname but a...description! I am not even royalist! I don't believe in monarchy but it's despicable to destort the historic reality because we want to be populist.

great video ! as a greek, here are some notes: 1. the ionian islands were actually given back because the population had suffered too many attrocities at the hands of the british and it had started to become kind of difficult to continue the occupation 2. Hellenes does not mean Greece , it means Greeks. Hellas - Ελλάς- means Greece. The reason greeks like to refraine from calling ourselves Greeks in the english language and prefer Hellenes - 'Ελληνες - instead, is because Greeks comes from the derogatory word γραικός , which was used against us by the Ottomans. 3. you pronounced Thessaloniki - Θεσσαλονίκη - pretty well 4. fascist Italy had almost no gains in Greece during ww2, but the germans did win and handed over some parts.

Ottomans called Greeks Rum or Yunan, if they wanted to insult them then I think they called them gavur which means infidels. I think you're confusing it with Latin 'Graeculus' which means "little Greek" and was used by the Romans as a pejorative term for Greeks. Greeks didn't find the term "Graikos" pejorative and it was used instead of Hellene during Byzantine and Ottomans times because Hellenes were branded as pagans.

To be fair, that coup attempt was horribly organized. The Greek coup was well planned, well thought out and almost perfectly executed. Juan Carlos also had a lot more political experience, and had stacked the military with more liberal officers, headed by the experienced Minister of Defence, Manuel Gutiérrez Mellado. Constantine, by contrast, was young, politically inexperienced, and had far less direct control over the military then Juan Carlos did, not helped the fact that between Constantine’s accession to the throne and the coup, there’d been a political crisis known as the Apostasia and 6 different Prime Ministers.

In 1919 we invaded Asia Minor, in order to liberate Smirna (and the surrounding area) which were populated mostly by Greeks and had been historically Greek for many many centuries before the Ottomans. The king was out of the picture at the time and the country was run by Venizelos. We were winning. Long story short, mid war the king returned and sent everything to shit. He kicked out all the generals and employed useless bootlickers of his in their stead, he completely crapped on our understanings/agreements with the great powers, he ignored all the military plans that were in place, he let the army sink for 2 years and then ordered a retarded/pointless charge towards Ankara. That was completely random and doomed to fail. And it did. Following that we lost hard and millions of Greeks were kicked out of Asia Minor. They had been living there for literally thousands of years. And now you know.

@gbour94 Жыл бұрын
Very nice video! Although it smoothers a lot the role Constantinos played during the period 1965-1967. During this period Constantinos constantly intervened into the politics of the country, mingled with the wide majority elected government and appointed non elected governments further destabilizing Greece. All those events, among others, resulted to the military Junta coup, marking a dark period for the Greek nation which suffered great loses (civilian suppression, tortures and deaths, marginalization of Greece in European politics and ultimately the invasion of Cyprus). Even following the military Junta coup, he failed to stand as a democracy rallying point and ultimately protect the constitution and his people. Instead he made the crown seem it gets along with the new regime and it showed its low reflexes only 7 months later making it into looking as a conflict of interest rather than a serious effort to restore democracy. Those further deteriorated his and the crown's public image. I do not want to be unfair towards Constantinos, as he has already stated he made a lot of faults during his reign and has recognized them. The fact that he returned in Greece 10 years ago as a civilian, abstaining from politics is very pleasant. As of now it has been almost 50 years since Greece is a republic and the institution of monarchy is well behind us. Also the end of monarch it is not entirely to blame Constantinos as a person. He as a king during his reign acted as expected, most probably as his father would had or most of his predecessors. Monarchy in Greece was always a controversy especially in the 20th century, coming with schisms (between republicans and monarchists in the period before WW1), dubious and controversial royal decisions acting against the interest of the Greek state (Greek neutrality in WWI, the Asia Minor war campaign following the end of WW1, resulting in the eclipse of the Greek populations in Asia Minor) and of course the extreme involvement into the politics (especially during the period following WWII with the civil war and the cold war). All those resulted in a mistrust towards the monarchy institution. To sum up Constantinos as an individual maybe was a lovely personality but the burden he had on his shoulders was heavy and he showed little willingness/ability to maneuver with it as a political personality. History will judge him as a king/public figure as well as the history of monarchy in Greece. May he rest in peace.
@vangelisskia214 Жыл бұрын
I agree with many things you wrote but surely not with all. You can't blame the Minor Asia 'catastrophe' solely on Konstantinos I for example. It's oversimplistic. And even if that was the case this doesn't mean he had bad intentions. Both Konstantinos I and II surely made mistakes but were as much at fault as almost every major Greek politician of their respective age. But no politician paid the price ir even lost his citizenship as Konstantinos did. Never forget, history is written by the winners. The Greek royal family were utterly the losers.

@@ΠαρασκευηΚωστελιδου The constitutions during the Greek revolution were written and approved by a small in number educated elite with many liberal elements, in order to touch the hearts and souls and gain the support of the western European liberal movements of the period. But even those were constantly changed ending up with the creation of a Kingdom. Even before Kapodistrias' rule it was agreed, decided and constituted that a King would utterly follow as the ruler. Apart from a small in number (but influential) educated elites with liberal ideals, the vast majority of the common folk revolted with the expectation of the creation of a neo-byzantine empire, with a king as its ruler. Eg according to Theodoros Kolokotronis, the commander-in-chief of the Greek Revolution: "OUR KING (Constantine XI Palaiologos) was killed and never surrendered to the Turks, he never signed a treaty with them" Aristides Hatzis, "The Noblest Cause: The 1821 Greek War of Independence", p.p. 112 For the first 100 years of the existence of the Greek state, the Greeks in their vast majority were pro-monarchists. That started to gradually change only after the "ethnikos dixasmos", the "Minor Asia catastrophe" and the influx of the mostly anti-monarchist newcomers from Anatolia and Eastern Thrace who blamed and felt betrayed mainly by the monarchy. The so called "old Greece" (the borders until the Balkan wars) even until a few decades ago was to a very large extent passionately pro-monarchist.

former prime minister, Konstantinos Mitsotakis admitted that the republican referendum was rigged and that the real discrepancy in the vote of Monarchy vs republic was around 1% (this was said in a documentary about King Pavlos I) this was also the finding of the European Court of Justice, when Konstantinos II sued the Greek Government

fun fact: when Greece became independent and Otto was installed by the great powers, he brought his pals and hangers-on to Athens. He proceeded to give many of them monopoly rights including the right to brew beer to one Bavarian named Fuchs. Greeks being unable to pronounce the short "u" or the chs sounds took to calling him FIX. Hence todays modern Greek beer called FIX.

I lived in Greece for couple years and I have to say that modern Greeks are very interesting and unique people but also very complicated. I think they are stubborn rebels by nature. Its hard for them to kneel to a king or any other foreign power like EU, NATO etc. And they will not do it even if that is against their interests and comes with a cost for their lives and their future. Sometimes I was thinking how is possible for this nation to be under Ottoman occupation and maybe thats the awnser why after that they are so proud and rebellious even though their country is not an example of how to run a modern country properly. They have so much corruption but at the same time their so proud for their country and their customs. They fight over anything with each other (they love to hate each other actually, its like their national hobby) but they can suddenly become one body when a foreigner will attack them. The majority of Greek people are against the Royals even though their politicians are very corrupted. Constantine made just 2 mistakes, he rejected the leftish elected government of Papandreou and a bit later he didn't do anything to stop the military Junta... and Greeks will never forgive him for these 2 mistakes because that resulted 7 years of dictatorship and the loss of half Cyprus by the Turks.

Greek here. Some random tidbits. Prince Otto was also selected in part because he was philhellenic and in part because his family heritage was partially from the Byzantine Greek Royal families of Komnenos and Laskaris! Although it was only a distant relationship the belief was picking someone of even a bit Greek heritage would make it easier to be accepted by Greeks to rule Greece. Video mentioned Christian persecution by pagans but left out far far more brutal Christian persecution of pagans beginning around 400 CE period. This was the period where most Greeks stopped referencing themselves as Hellenes. The term Hellene had a pagan connotation and anyone that used the term faced persecution and possible even death from fundimentalist christians of that era unless they converted to Christian Romans. The last known unbroken use of the term Hellene and ancient Greek god pagan warship was in the 10th century in Mani Greece (the region of Greece where Sparta is located) Allthough most Greeks are christian today very few of them until quite recently knew Greeks ended up Christians because of oppression of their original religion. There is a small but growing number of reconstructionist pagans in Greece. They don't exactly follow ancient Greek rituals (no animal sacrifices more like hippies with fruits and singing) but they do pray to ancient Greek gods.. To understand the first hundred years of Greece's politics, one had to understand the megali idea which was about liberating all lands from the the Ottomans that Greeks lived on. Greek Irredentism ended with the great catastrophe in 1922 when Ottomans defeated Greeks in Asia minor. Greece did expand a little bit further when Italy ceded the Dodecanese islands as compensation for their role in attacking and occupying Greece during WW2. The independent island of Cyprus which was over 80 percent Greek might have joined Greece in 1974 too but Turkey invading the northern part. I-am-not-a-crook Nixon betrayed Greece by greenlighting the invasion to appease Turkey which he saw as greater strategic interest. This policy of appeasement at the expense of Greece unfortunately continues up to the present. (see Erdogan's violation of UNCLOS in the Aegean and threats to bomb Athens) Many wonder what relationship modern (ethnic) Greeks have to ancient Greeks. Some claim it's a myth that modern Greeks are related to ancient Greeks but DNA testing seems to indicate modern Greeks are directly and closely biologically related to people in Greece as far back as late neolithic.

Thank you so much for doing the biography on this wonderful man. I had seen biographies on him and his family before but it was a lovely tribute to you did. My favorite part was when King Constantine tried to get Justice for the money for the property that the government had taken from him. They tried to pull a fast one by paying him off from the disaster fund. He outsmarted them by taking the money but using it as it's after fun that he would have control of to make sure that the money went to the people who need it. This showed his generosity ( giving needy Greeks the money HE was owed) , his caring for others, & his brilliance( putting it in a fund that he could control to make sure it got to the real needy). My condolences to Queen Ann-Marie, their children & grandchildren. The world's loss is heaven's gain.

All those treasure didn't belong to him,but to the greek state to the greek people. He gained 14 Million euros of this auction. The whole disaster fund thing is non existent as much as the ''funds'' that Constantine ''gave to the people''. Thats just PR BS. The truth is that in 1991 he was allowed by the then PM Mitsotakis (the father of the current Greek PM) to take loads of ship containers with artifacts. The political party of ND then was far more to the right than it is today, and it was the refuge of all the old conservative royalists. Mitsotakis was trying to please them. Some artifacts and works of art were not allowed to be taken away as they were considered as the Greek State's fortune. What is VERY interesting is that there was a break in Tatoi, where many of them were removed by burglers and by ''chance'' found their way to Cristy's auction house lining the pockets of... guess who...
