1:15 in Europe they sometimes add a layer of gravel on a flat roof, mainly to protect the membrane, giving it a couple of years extra life, sometimes they add a layer of plants. That benefits al sorts of things. Lifetime, insulation, drainage and Co reduction
@rsporter2 күн бұрын
That's common in North America as well. The rocks on a roof are called ballast because it holds down the insulation.
@thisisbriannaandrea2 күн бұрын
Typically with a flat roof the framing is flat and the insulation under the rubber membrane provides the slope. Its done in commercial all the time. The foam sheets are preformed with a slope; essentially a wedge.
@leviathanx08152 күн бұрын
18:29 You know, Drywall/Plasterboard carrier handles also work for sheets of wood. There are some real fancy ones on the market. At least, I found the use of them more comfortable on the long run than carrying the large amount of boards that way.

Round these parts up yonder in Washington, we call them Slivers when they are sticking out, Splinters are under the skin (or at least very close to being fully under the skin), though sometimes I think its acceptable to use them for size variation, slivers are the smaller/thinner of the two in that circumstance. The more you know....! :)

In Denmark our codes require that flat roofs should be designed with a fall of 1:40 which means for every run of 1m it drops 4cm or in imperial terms that should be 5/16 for every foot. this gives an adequate drainage as a minimum. :)

In the UK the joists or roof timbers go on flat and then the firring pieces (or shims I think you call them) go on the top or to the outside side of the roof part of the timber. Also gravel is put on the roof to stop the sun perishing the built up felt that is used on flat roofs.

I enjoy watching your videos. Good thinking on adding a little slope to the flat roof. You might want to re-think the absence of a gutter in the back. Water running off the roof without a gutter could cause splashes against the wall depending on the wind. It also might drown some of the plants that the owner would want to plant in that area. Especially with weather getting more extreme the owner likely will regret not having gutters.
@barmanvarn2 күн бұрын
On the flat roof could you have added a 3rd top plate to each side and then put a small taper on the top of each board? Then the ends would be square and that extra top plate would let you keep the depth needed for insulation. This would also keep the ceiling flat and you wouldn’t need the wedges. I mean if you’re gonna do wedges just “wedge” the rafters and be done with it.

@brianhopkins52512 күн бұрын
ok i think you did that backwards. I think you should have set the rafters flat (level) and then set the long shims on top. The ends would be level, the decking weight would naturally hold the shims in place and the ceiling would be flat, the ends would be flat and the top would be pitched.
@MaxLaMenace2 күн бұрын
yeah but then you get an oversized fascia board on the front side of the house.
@Jonnyeet2 күн бұрын
Or leave one side the 2x12 and rip it down to a 2x10 on the other end. Then you have a 2x12 facia on one side, 2x10 facia on the other side, a flat ceiling inside and a pitched roof that didn’t require a third top plate on the one wall.

0:30 Watching all of the episodes where you need to figure something out, where reality doesn't match the plans etc, I don't quite get how you can work like that. Maybe it's because my background is in electronic engineering where everything has to be designed to 0.001", but if I was to ever build/design a house, it would start as a 3D model, complete with every piece of rebar, stud, wire or pipe. And update it if any changes need to be made on site. None of that "lets figure out how high those studs need to be for that pitch", I have a cut list before there is even a hole in the ground.
