CONSTRUCTION SITE: JLG Scissor Lift No-Start

As a kid I worked for an Auto Electric Rebuilder . This was before permanent magnet and gear reduction units .,m I would go to repair shops and parts stores . One thing I ran into was parts stores using THIN jumper cables on a bench test . Some of the starters were tight , due to the front and rear bushings being replaced . I had people return good units because of those thin cables . I then used one heavy battery cable and grounded the starter body on the negative post . Almost all were good . When buying jumper cables , get at least 4 Guage or HEAVIER . The thinner guage are a waste of time and money . The lower the number , the heavier the guage . And those cheap jump boxes can leave you walking .

Agreed...just because the package says "Jumper Cables" on the outside doesn't mean they are the right gauge cables for a meaningful service. I have seen some aluminum stiff cables that barely suffix the designation and then I have seen the good 4 gauge copper twisted cables that are 20 feet long and will last a good 20 years if used properly.

I have some #4 jumper cables, and they have issues to boost a car. You have to charge the battery first... Hook, start the good car, rpm to like 2000, wait a few minutes, shut down and try to start the disabled car... Even #4 is small for such a long cable. And yes, the length is important! The longer the wire, the higher the resistance, the bigger you need the cable to be to compensate for it! #4 gauge is rated 80A only, it does endure more for a short time, but it heat up. It have 0.000248 ohms per foot (don't forget to double the length, you need to calculate the positive AND negative!) #2 is rated 100A, and have 0.000156 ohms per foot, so roughtly half. You can double the length as #4! #1 is rated 125A, 0.000123 ohms/foot #0 is 150A and 0.0000983 ohms/foot Why is the resistance important? The starter use a TON of current. Like 200A or more. The smaller the wires, the more resistance, and the more voltage you lose. Plus, and more importantly, the clamps never make a good contact, thru have an high resistance. The bigger the wire, the better the clamps, and the less voltage you lose. You can indeed lose all the power... leading to near zero for the starter... As seen in this video, this tiny starter use about 80A just to free spin, it don't even make a motor turn!!

@@thephantom1492 Agreed. Some of us may not know if we have a #4 or #2 etc. gauge cables. Any larger than that and most folks won't leave them in their trunk for those just in case events. Either way, 15' or longer seem to be the ideal length so, do the math depending on your amp requirements.

To The Phantom 1492 : Thanks for the education . That is a real eye opener . Next pair of cables will be professional grade and MUCH HEAVIER . Same with Jump Pack . I worked there from 1970 to 1980 . I was in countless shops and parts stores . The words VOLTAGE DROP were NEVER mentioned . The most high tech equipment I saw was a load tester for batteries . There was a huge gap in knowledge . All before the internet and even fax machines . A guy in the neighborhood went to a diesel course in school . A good mechanic , but he couldn't spell diesel !

Exactly !!! Then would have been easier, certainly faster ( 3 days to get a REBUILT starter. Construction equipment, likely they would just want just a new starter anyway ), BUT and funner to take apart and simply ,likely clean, or put a new set of brushes ( & bearing ) in it... I/We used to rebuild starters/alternators/calipers/wheel cylinders etc all the time at my auto shop ... Nothing to see here but a simple ez peezzy diagnosis & parts changer ...

Solenoid actually worked a couple times in the beginning when you heard the loud "CLICK". The motor itself was burned out...smelled really bad lol

likely brushes went, they kept starting it until it killed the armature/commutator from dragging. I could here the starters death song when he hit the button and the solenoid kicked the bendix a few times weakly :))

You are right about not many people working on construction equipment. I worked on a lot of very old dirt-moving machines many years ago, as a second job. My time was much less than what the Cat service was. Nowadays things are much more complex with the advent of computers in everything. But I like it that way, more need for an electronics tech. :)

New construction was right next door to me. When their tree chipper would not start they came to me knowing I was a car guy. I've never seen such bastardization of wiring before. The safety shut off switch had been replaced with a regular wall switch and duct taped to the unit. Once I rewired the unit, it worked properly and safely.

Yes! I've always charged double for this type of equipment and especially if "on site". We're providing a convenience of saving a tow as well, which equipment can be more difficult to tow or load when inoperative. Happy New Year Ivan!!

Mobile service is what construction is used to...the larger construction companies have a staff of mechanics who regularly service their generators that run 24x7 and need oil change intervals performed on site due to the long run times. They do all of the equipment such as grease fittings etc. to keep them on the go.

Wow was shocked with 3 days downtime for a starter repair. Did starter get stripped for inspection? Often just the brush set and a quick tidy up and recut of comm. Only time the commutator gets damaged is usually from consistent cranking attempts with it in one spot. Big weakness with the spray on types now. Sites here expect repair same day, if not half day- then charge & call out rate is well worth the turnaround. Enjoy the new year!

I would have also checked the voltage on the control wire coming from the push button. Easiest way to test is run a temporary wire from the control on solenoid and touch it to the battery cable and see if the starter spins.

I have a JLG scan tool. They are $500 best to get one.I go through your area on 78 every month to NY if you need to borrow one let me know. I worked on this stuff for 30 years. Newer ones after 2001 have self diagnosis. Many of these JLG the entire motor swings out on a hinge to service starter etc. Excellent work Thanks

I Run repair manlifts cranes telehandler s since 1985. New cranes are very sophisticated and Grove factory near you has training for Hirschman LMI computers used on many Manitowoc Grove machines. There is a huge demand for Techs as you in this industry. Liebherr also Licon system s very advanced . I am semi retired now. Bit still work on troubleshooting equipment.

Nice going Ivan. Nice easy starter replacement. Good diagnosis. My quickest way I usually test a starter is to have someone get inside the car and have them turn the key to cranking position while I give the starter a good whack. If that doesn’t work I check for battery voltage at the main terminal and s terminal with the key in the start position. Pretty easy diag. and easy fix

Good for you on capitalizing on construction equipment repair. You are right there is money to made. If the equipment doesn't run, and well than the houses do not get built. Were you hired by the building contractor, or the equipment rental company(if unit was a rental)?

The relay or solenoid (as some call it) contacts are probably worn down. Many times you can disassemble, rotate the contacts and get a 2nd life from the starter. In this case, of course, replacing it is best. Worth noting that the solenoid draws much less than the motor itself so it was possible the original problem could still have been a poor connection at the motor or battery - "Bench" testing proved you correct though. Great fix as usual Ivan - Happy New Year!

I own five of these small Kubota’s, usually the solenoid. To avoid a comeback on your dime I would have replaced the complete starter. Was there a core charge on the starter? You looked sharp in that hard hat and vest! Wear it home, ring your door bell and tell the lady of the house you’re there to check her wiring! Happy New Year! Yeah, those starter solenoids do go bad. I just replace the solenoid. Most of the time, the starter motor is still good. Test the old starter motor too.

On the Toyota’s, I would just solder a scrap of copper to it and it would work great. Now I just get a good rebuild from a local guy who does all his own work. No giant chain rebuilds. Which r usually washed and painted junk. Plus he will tell me what went wrong with the old one. Sort of like Eric O’s machine shop guy. Keep those guys in business as along as possible!

caduceus33 Good evening. If I can disassemble the solenoid, u will c where the lug gets worn away from arcing. At that point, u can clean and flux it. Then cut a piece of copper from from some scrap and build it up.

If the engine was locked up the starter would struggle and drop the voltage in the battery you would see that on your meter

Working you're way into the job, why not be sure the relay is passing voltage to the starter solenoid? It clicks but that's no guarantee that it's functioning. Check the solenoid by jumping the contacts. If it doesn't spin at that point, you can be sure the motor is toast (or needs bearings or brushes).

At least on GM side terminals, that symptom can be caused by loose battery cables. It would pass the battery drop test as you conducted it. You'd have to check the system voltage while attempting to crank. It would drop because of high resistance at one or both terminals.

My brother has been a forklift technician since 1997, and he became one with the aid of his automotive technician diplomas from the local community college. He was gung ho about being automotive technician early on, but after learning about what goes on behind the scenes in the automotive industry he was turned off. He did not like the idea of cheating customers out of unneeded repairs.

I have replaced the solenoids on these. The starter motor is probably still good. I asked Ivan the same question. He might have been asked by the rental company to replace the entire starter?

OK Ivan, I just picked up a starter & hi AMP alternator for my Jeep on Craigslist for 10 bucks. Alternator needed brushes $ 10.00 plus my time. The starter is a factory part, NOT REBUILT that's been sitting in this guys garage for years. Only 1 month of use before he wrecked the Jeep. I'm not on the clock like you are I did this for my personal vehicle, so I get it now.

Went to pick up and cannot turn on. level light & sounder comes on. Machine is leveled. Batteries are charged. I disconnected batteries several times. Does not work from ground or platform. Nice! Love those easy ones.... Boom. You are not wrong about on site, and special equipment. A million years ago, at a different job, holy cow... My company would send me out sometimes... What they were billing the customer, for me to be there, was quite substantial.... NOT that I was seeing any of that money, oh my, no... But in fairness, To get someone, to put the lift on a truck, drive it to a place that will work on it, leave it there... then go get a truck, go pick it up, and bring it back to the jobsite.... That's not free either, to the guy paying the guy.... So, you ARE adding a lot of value, by just buzzing out and looking at it on site.... So, I think you're right, to charge... Not a lot of guys are mobile at all.... To your credit, you seem to have learned to be mobile, and be effective... that adds a lot of value to your services....

A bit of a pain to get to, but the job is done :-D I expected a little hammer to appear in your hands, play a game of punish the solinoid :-D. The high current connections have caused me problems on frends cars, the damp gets in and the resistance rises, battery terminal clamps are no1 on my list. If you charge twice as much you must make sure it runs a little better, but if it won't run you must tell them to warm it up for 5 before using it, especially risking lives way to heck and gone in the air.
