The bad news is that it would be difficult for me to provide you with any specific lumber sizes, because I don't know how much weight is going to be stored in the areas that are going to be modified.

Thanks for the video! I have 2x4 that are 24” apart. I’m looking to hang something that’s heavy and plan to do it along the back wall. It’s 4x8 ft in size and want it to support 600-800lbs. I’m trying to figure out the best way to reenforce the garage ceiling. There’s drywall, my roof design looks more like the second option you showed, where there are two diagonal pieces of wood going from the main top roof pieces of wood to the ones that run horizontally that have the drywall nailed to it. I know this probably sounds ridiculous, but I don’t know the proper names for joist vs rafter vs stringer vs whatever I don’t know. Thanks in advance and I hope you can sift through and understand what I’m asking! You rock!

for the vertical board replacement, would that be a 2x4 or 1x4?

You would be safe replacing it with the same board you removed.

2x4 inch base board, by however long the garage? 20ft? 24ft? The 2x4s would solve the height issue and give more thickness of a base, for storage.
