Good discussion, but Gabe is wrong about the Equinox using 150 kW v. 350 kW DC Fast Chargers. The 85 kW Ultium battery pack has a fairly low nominal voltage of 288 volts. Charging output from a station is determined by volts x amps, with the amperage limitation on the station side often determined by the cable. Most “150 kW” DCFC have a cable limited to 350 amps, while the “350 kW” stations have 500 amp cables. In order for the Equinox EV to get its 150 kW advertised rate, it needs 500 amps. 288 volts x 500 amps = 144,000 watts. The pack voltage rises as the battery fills up, so it’s possible to briefly get the full 150 kW before it tapers.

I have to agree here. I have also seen videos that seem to demonstrate the difference. However, on my 2025 Equinox EV, GM energy chargers show the voltage, and I am seeing voltage in the 300's. I wonder if they haven't adjusted the battery somewhat.
@amirmoradi95955 күн бұрын
I was going to say this too. Thanks for pointing it out
@georgepelton56455 күн бұрын
@@martalli The reason you are seeing voltage in the 300's probably is the added voltage the charger must provide in order to get current to flow to the battery. If the open circuit voltage is 288 V, it is going to take over 300 V supply to get 200-500 Amps flow into the battery. This is why 12 V car batteries are charged at 14.0-14.5 V by the car's alternator.
@holmiumh4 күн бұрын
@@martalli It's just the difference between nominal voltage (288 V), actual voltage and charging voltage. The actual voltage for Equonox EV is between 270 V (0% SOC) to 330V (100% SOC), the charging voltage needs to be a bit higher than the actual voltage.

Nio, a Chinese EV maker, has done battery swapping for years now. They actually say they do over 70K swaps per day! You can choose between 3 different sizes of batteries being swapped.
@gman95435 күн бұрын
Yes exactly. Tesla also toyed with the idea and had a test swap station built in LA for a time. But manufacturers are in the business of selling you cars, and they're not going to make it easier for you to hold onto your old one. However, manufacturers are looking at battery modularity though, so that you don't need to replace an entire pack now. So maybe that's progress.

Second, someone asks you about EV battery swapping and none of you seem to know there's a major global manufacturer that has been doing for years in Europe, China and many other countries called NIO! lol They swap out EV batteries daily and have a lot of swapping stations just not in North America
@georgepelton56455 күн бұрын
Besides NIO's automated battery swap stations, there also are options to install different batteries into older EVs. The Nissan Leaf came with 24, 30, 40 and 60 kWh batteries. If you need to replace the 24 kWh battery in an older Leaf, there are options to install the newer, higher capacity, Leaf batteries. Same for Tesla Model S, which came with 60, 70, 75, 85, 90, and 100 kWh batteries. As mentioned in the video heavier batteries do require suspension changes to handle the weight. However, many of the upgrade options can be done without suspension changes.

Re: no Android Auto and Apple Car Play - Has CR asked GM or other manufactures or investigated how much it would cost in licensing fees to include these features going forward?
@RatKing594 күн бұрын
Both Android Auto and CarPlay are free to license to auto manufacturers. From the phone maker’s perspective, they’ve already charged the user for the hardware and this is one way to keep them attached to the operating system. The result, inevitably, is more money from services, data, and compatible hardware purchases (FitBit, AirPods, etc). GM and Tesla know that there’s a billion-dollar opportunity in user data, so they’re opting to use their own infotainment in an attempt to capture as much of that as possible. Tesla’s vertical integration and software expertise makes it less painful for the user than GM, but both have charges that eventually apply for in-car GPS and data. The other manufacturers are just giving the people want they want. They’re more focused on moving metal than capturing metadata.

When a Tesla vehicle finds a tesla charging station & the driver picks it as a destination on the map, the car will automatically “precondition” the battery so it will charge fast when it arrives. Notice the map in the Tesla is integrated with the car so it knows when to start preconditioning (which uses power so you don’t want to start too early). GM wants the same thing. If it allows Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, the apps are not integrated with the car & preconditioning cannot happen automatically. This is why GM is not including Apple CarPlay & Android Auto. I think the simplistic solution is just to have a button to allow owners to start preconditioning manually. The car knows the battery temperature. It just needs to know when you will arrive at the charger which CarPlay/Android auto can tell you. Press the button to start preconditioning, then the screen asked in how many minutes & the driver puts it in & you’re done.

I'm with Orrin and his missing of the old flip-lever dimming rear view mirrors. Not only do the two Subaru models I've owned with auto-dimming (a 2005, and now a 2020) mirrors not dim enough in my opinion, but there are plenty of night driving circumstances where I want it to be dimmed--usually on dark roads when the vehicle is judged "too far" away, or closer, but somehow not at the right angle/height to activate the auto dimming function. And the reason why I still will check this box, is because in Subarus at least, the auto dimming rear view mirror is often packaged with auto-dimming side-view mirrors. And THAT is a brilliant feature for night drives on the highway when cars are passing you. I don't have to hold up my hand to block the mirror at night anymore. (I also like the compass feature built into the Subaru mirror.) Still I get better, more effective dimming out of the flip switch style. Which I can activated when I want. Another circumstance is at dusk when the car lights are blazing and bothering my eyes but the atmospheric light conditions are NOT deemed sufficiently dark enough to activate the auto-dimming feature. And to throw up a hand to flip it to "dim" when I drive my family's older cars, is not hard, or distracting in the least bit. It's literally one of the easiest things to do while driving. I'm a little surprised that Gabe and Mike being drivers of "a certain age" (like myself) don't have similar observations/memories of how good the old flip style mirrors ACTUALLY worked.

You usually hear about this as the first thing that folks who race on the track as a "must do" upgrade. But honestly, you are in a similar situation, with increased wear and heat and pressure on the OEM pads due to the rolling hills that make up Connecticut. You wouldn't necessarily want "track" brake pads as they can be a little noisy for street use, BUT there are definitely higher quality/wear pads available to you for your vehicle. You'd have to do a little research to find out which ones would be best for your vehicle, but if the OEM pads aren't working for you, then I would try an after-market high performance set before you go out and buy a whole new car.

But it is and at least in the Tesla, I can still access Apple Music. You would think if I can install Apple Music on my android phone I would be able to install it on the Google based info entertainment system, NOT! The 3LT comes with the larger 21 inch wheels which I ended up not liking because the ride wasn't as comfortable as it would be with a smaller wheel with a tire with a bigger side wall. The seats were somewhat comfortable, but not as comfortable as my ID.4 seats. The DC fast charging is not a strong point by any means and I had a couple issues charging on Tesla's V4 chargers. My 3LT did not come with super cruise, which I was OK with cause I had no intentions of road tripping in the Equinox (24 month lease at 10000 miles). But it was kind of odd that my 3LT did not have front parking sensors despite having the 360 camera option but it did have rear parking sensors though. It wasn't terrible, but I wasn't in love with it and fortunate for me, my local dealer did something wonky with the paperwork, and I was able to back out of the deal after three weeks. So now I know other than a Tesla, not having CarPlay and Android auto is a dealbreaker 😂

In mainland China, Nio is reported to have established 2,464 battery swap stations, of which 825 are located along major highways. On an average, these stations provide 79,000 services per day. COME ON GUYS. How can you expect people to take your show seriously when it seems pretty obvious that you don't really know what you're talking about?
@richh.10105 күн бұрын
NIO and CATL are or will be in the battery swapping with expansion overseas over the next few years.
@toronado4555 күн бұрын
Yes, just because Better Place failed, doesn't mean battery swapping cannot work. That's just an anecdotal example.

It's working in Europe in a limited way and more present in China. Because the US & Canada are slow to adopt a technology does not mean it does not have value. That said, distances travelled are usually greater in North America and even city dweller like me prefers large batteries for occasional road trips. City cars with small batteries don't sell well here. If we all have EVs with large batteries, there won't be as much of a market for battery swapping

I definitely think General motors and Chevrolet are going the wrong way with not including Apple CarPlay as I exclusively use voice to text & Waze while driving as well as listening to downloaded music and podcast so it’s a big mess and absolute no go for me on buying any of those vehicles.
@LakeLake1234 күн бұрын
The issues is they are 100% wrong on these features. It has voice-to-text. It has Waze. It has Spotify, KZbin music, Amazon Music, etc. etc. And of course you can Bluetooth stream any other audio to the car, just like every other modern car.

After getting rid of Carplay/Android Auto, I expect Chevrolet next to get rid of electronic start and instead put a hand crank on the front of their vehicles. You know, for all the people who are tired of having to push a button from inside to start their car.

Why don’t you liberals review cars that the American public wants? We are sick of these EVs being shoved down our throats. We don’t want them.

$50k For an Equinox EV? PASS
@jeffmcclendon38355 күн бұрын
With Colorado and Federal rebates for EVs, I paid $26,500 out the door for my 2025 Equinox EV LT AWD. I did not get Super Cruise and honestly, the Equinox EV is so easy to drive and planted due to its low center of gravity, Super Cruise would ruin the fun of driving it for me.

If the folks over at Chevy are smart, they’ll bring back Apple Car Play and Android Auto- In an age where car manufacturers are constantly working to move the ball forward, this is a step backwards…

You say battery swapping for EVs doesn't work. What are you guys smoking? Nio has over 2800 battery swap stations and they work just fine. CATL is getting into the act, too, and is getting car makers to agree on standard pack sizes. You guys are such losers, living in your cloister in rural CT. Read the news, ladies and gents.

I will probably get some negative comments but I will ask this question: With the upcoming Trump administration, how would any EV be relevant? Would it be foolish to buy anything with a battery? I feel that EVs are now out of fashion, a pariah in our country's view of the environment, as perceived by Trump.

@shawnwhite25725 күн бұрын
Most developed nations around the world are moving towards EVs, regardless of who is the American President. Also, California (among other states) is still going to ban sales of new ICE vehicles after 2030.
@ehb0025 күн бұрын
Various states (CA in particular as well as the dozenish that have adopted the CA standards) "encourage" EV purchases through making conforming ICE more and more expensive (not to be confused with states that, under Biden, have a registration price surcharge for an EV to "compensate" for the lack of fuel taxes that is 2x to 3x what the ICE version would bring in, even if you assume the EV is a fully laden full sized pickup truck). This will only change if Trump successfully sues in Federal court to overturn CA's ability to set their own pollution standards for cars and trucks. That litigation will presumably take years to wind through the system as it'll end up in SCOTUS in the end.

Have you missed that Elon is fairly tight with Trump?
@ragweedmakesmesneeze4 күн бұрын
I think what you are missing here is the fact that you take Trump at his word. He loved to talk trash about EVs because he knew his voters loved that stuff. And that's aside from the fact that one of his biggest supporters is Elon Musk. Now that he actually has to govern and do the hard work? No one, including Trump, is stopping EV development and production. It will still be very easy to buy, drive and own a gas vehicle for AT LEAST the next 25 years, but EVs are the future and it doesn't make any sense to try and stop the development of EV technology. Look at some point battery technology, charging infrastructure, all of the annoying things that have led to somewhat of a stalling in the EV marketplace, is going to get better and everyone is going to gravitate towards buying what makes the most sense for them. And for a lot of folks, it's going to be EVs. Sure, there will always be the "pry it from my cold dead hands" people that will never transition to EVs, or even another brand of car. And that's fine and expected. Buy/drive what you want! But EVs are a growing market that has stalled out a bit on the consumer side, but that's going to pick up again as battery/charging tech improves. Personally, I wouldn't "buy" an EV right now, but if I needed/wanted an EV, I would lease it. Unlike an ICE vehicle which may have few if little improvements over the course of 3 or 6 years, there is no question that an EV in 3-6 years is going to be significantly better than almost any EV you can buy today. EVs depreciate way too much right now to make a good case for buying an EV.
