Humble Little Homestead

6 жыл бұрын

My mom has a very beautiful container garden. This year she experimented with growing potatoes in laundry baskets. How did this experiment work out? Well... you'll just have to watch and see....

Thank you for joining us on our journey. Several years ago our family moved back to a small homestead that's been in our family for many years. Our goal is to become as self sufficient as possible and get back to a simpler lifestyle. As we build our homestead, we're trying to fix up and use as much as we can from what my grandparents and great grandparents built. Not only does it save us time and money from having to build new from scratch, but there's just something special about being able to reuse something that was built by your grandparents back in the day. We just can't get ourselves to tear down anything if it has potential to be fixed up. We hope you'll enjoy following our journey as we work towards building our little homestead. We'll share videos on everything from caring for and raising animals, gardening, mistakes we've made and lessons learned, how-to tips, and what our day to day life is like. Be sure to subscribe to get our latest videos and follow us on www.humblelittlehomestead.com.

Should be tried on all vegetables , but wouldn't that somehow turn potatoes green when they emerge and be exposed to air and sunlight 🤔

I'm only 64, but I broke my back a few years back so I have had to change the way I do things. Container gardening is the only way to go for me! It pacifys my need to garden without hurting myself. The container you used for your potatoes also makes a wonderful strawberry tower. I dream of the day I have tiny houses scattered across my 7 acres. My kids have gone off out of state, but I have other single women friends that want to live out here and help. It's only a matter of money. LOL, it's always my biggest stumbling block. Working towards it though. In the meantime I'm watching how others are turning sheds into homes. Many blessings to you and your family.

What I’ve noticed with growing potatoes is that if you keep the roots fairly cool they grow better. I think that’s why you got less in your black pot because it heats them up too much and more with the white one with all the air holes. ❤️. Hopefully that tip helps you out in the future

Guuuuuurl, if you can, get a dehydrator or sun dry those fruits and veg. Then blend them into a powder and store in sealed air tight Mason jars away from light. Then you can use those powders un tour meals or smoothies.

The trick I learned from feeding my carnivore family is to make rich sauces for the veggies. They’ll eat green beans, kale, chard, cabbage if I make a rich butter sauce with lots of flavor and drench the veggies with it. Then over a few weeks I gradually reduce the amount of sauce, and the amount of butter. They’re still eating the veggies and have even come around to liking it. I make tomato soup and replace 1/2 the milk/cream with puréed butternut squash. They love it! I chop the zucchini and mix it in with the ground beef for lasagna. They don’t even notice it but think my lasagna has ‘improved’ in flavor. I make beef stew and put lots of chopped veggies like zucchini & green beans in amongst the large chunks of potatoes, carrots, celery and onions. They moaned at first but now they like it. And chicken or beef vegetable soup they think is great. As long as there’s plenty of chicken in there, they will go along with eating the veggies. I even make chicken and dumplings and add some veggies to that - mainly peas, carrots, green beans. Small amount at first and then gradually more. It’s been fun to see them evolve into eating more veggies and they’ve come around to liking it. Now they say restaurant food is too bland. 😀😀

That sounds like fun! You will have to let me know how they turnout. This year my mom planted a bunch in 5 gallon buckets, she did one in a laundry basket and then also experimented with growing some in feed sacks. So far the feed sacks have been working great too. I plan to do an up date on her container garden soon. She's really growing a lot in containers this year.

Some people regard growing plants as "work." For them, gardening is not fun. I maintain that the rewards in gardening don't always come in the form of potatoes or zucchini, but in being out in nature, helping things grow, and seeing the new life coming up through the soil. By the time the harvest is due, the rewards have already been enjoyed, just watching the process of life happening because of our efforts. And no one can put a price on that.
