I found this video whilst trying to explain to a new driver how to do containers. I got my license just before coving so I had no training at all. I wish I'd seen this when I first started! Only other thing I would add is that at the back of the trailer is a bar that should be extended when carrying 45 foot containers. I thank you very much for the video

Thanks Can I just add that when you go to collect your 45' foot container - even after you have correctly set up your skelly trailer - do make sure the when the crane is overhead lowering your container onto your skelly, make sure you aim your lorry (shunt) for the right holes because the chances are you have been used to loading 40 footers and it's easy to expect the 45 to slot onto the same twist locks which it doesn't.....

Got my test on Monday and giving containers some serious consideration as a first job if all goes well. These videos are immensely helpful! You've also convinced me in another video that agency might be the best way for me to go instead of staying in my current company which would be supermarket work and involve tipping pallets and cages all day myself. Could you recommend any agencies that do container work around Liverpool? Only if you're allowed, of course. I'm also considering Evri and Amazon. Been watching a few others that do those, it seems good too. Long days tho. I won't mind doing the longer days as long as I can get around 30-48 hours, 3-4 days per week. That's ideal for me. 4 on 4 off also sounds good. Glad to see you're often around my part of the world. Hopefully see you out there soon!

Yes, the 45 has the locks in the same position like a 40 but the 45 container extends 2.5“ past the locks obviously. This means it pokes out at the end. To ensure the whole vehicle now is not too long, the container is moved forward a bit to be within the length limit. Fun fact there are 45 container with rounded ends to make sure you the tractor doesn’t hit the container in sharp bends.
@Raul6893 жыл бұрын
Thanks
@grahamwhitehead94982 жыл бұрын
No it doesn't. You shrink the trailer to pin 3 marked yellow for a 45 and then use the front twist locks marked yellow.. YOU DO NOT USE 40 POSITIONING 4 ON A 45. You use position 3.

I heard that at least in London area if one uses the 40f inner front twist lock for the 45f box and vosa-nostra catches it one could be fined like it's an infringement or so. If that is a legend or not , I'd rather not gamble. So I learned the same thing, position 3 and outer twist lock in the front for the 45f box. Some trailers have a bumper extension, which legend also says it could welcome a fine if caught when extended but hauling a smaller box.

Brilliant tutorial. Always wondered how these work. Do u get much handballing work with containers?
@Raul6893 жыл бұрын
No you never do handball at all on containers. Driver never touches the stuff. But yes there are jobs where it takes 8h for them to unload. Easiest job ever.
@scrivo83403 жыл бұрын
Quick question why do you pull away before putting twist locks into locking position after having container loaded ??

It's not allowed to go in to the crane area. So you have to pull out and then go do the twist locks.

Hi Raul great video, I really like container videos for some reason. Do you think there is good money to be made as an owner driver on containers? If I had my own Operators License and had my transport managers qualification. Thinking £16k to 20k to buy a unit with around 350K miles on it (Range T, Actros, XF etc). Hire a skelly trailer for £100ish a week. I have looked a lot online and it's mixed comments, the ones that are negative seem to be owner operators so putting a payed driver in the truck and they don't actually own it as it's on lease! I reckon if a genuine owner driver who owns the unit and drives it it may be worthwhile? Interested to know your thoughts as you have run your own trucks before I gather.
@Raul6893 жыл бұрын
Hi pal. To be honest i don't think it's worth to have just 1 unit. But it's a good place to start. I'm sure in notime you will be having 4 or 5. Sure there is good money. But at the beginning you will be running around like crazy to get things going. Been there done that. Now i just have other plans for the future 👍👍👍

@@Raul689 Thanks for the reply Raul 👍. It would be just one truck and me driving it, I couldn't be doing with the bother of finding and managing employees, not looking to make a fortune either just a reasonable living and a bit of independence. I'm currently an owner driver courier in a LWB van and often tramp Monday to Friday, a truck would be a more comfortable option. I'm just not sure there is the financial reward to justify the time and expense to upgrade to a 44t owner driver. Cheers again.
