@@ronburgundy7127 I drove a forklift for years and would have other departments ask me for help and I was usually happy to oblige. I could thread a needle with a forklift but some people would make it unnecessarily difficult. You'd go over to help and there would be a dozen things in your way that they could have taken care of before hand. Some people don't value other people's time or effort. I had my own production job to do. I wasn't there to serve them. Just like this guy, he's probably skilled enough to put that load anywhere they needed it if given 30-45 minutes to maneuver around all their obstacles, but all it takes is one broken sprinkler head, or septic line, or rose bush, and all his effort is for naught. It's just not worth it. Help the people that appreciate you and have a place prepared. Tell the others to pound sand.

If you want your drywall dropped inside, buy it from an actual drywall company and have them stock it wherever you need it. Make no mistake, if you're being captain helpful and taken in the extra effort of moving materials inside for somebody and they do something stupid like get in your way and end up with something dropped on their foot or knocked over or who knows what else, they aren't likely to show you similar courtesy in not suing the hell outta you for injuring them...which home Depot isnt going to stand behind you on because you were outside the scope of work. And dont forget, those drivers are contractors. They aren't getting paid on a clock they can ride to do a favor for some customer. They get paid by the deliver so any time he wastes being a boy scout literally is costing him money he could be making on the next run plus the fuel his equipment is burning while being Niceguy Eddie, the time he burns may delay him into running in rush hour traffic at the end of the day, among other things, all of which cost him money. The driver scratched the door handle on the gate and without even a blink of an eye they told him to take it back and refused the delivery. Fucking b-tches. The driver was a nice guy and put the sheets into the garage for her, but he advised her that per the delivery sheet, curbside was as far as he was required to go with them. She then decided to move the sheets in herself by scoring them at the halfway mark in both directions, and then folding the sheet into 4. When I drove back in the day.. I didn't do any more than what was required. Our safety department was extremely specific about that. The word "driver assist" was also a rumor too in my vocabulary. I didn't touch anything. However if you wanted something ran from Connecticut to LA in 3 days that's doable. ;)

I just got a few pallets of bricks delivered from Lowe's. I had no idea that "curb side" delivery literally meant on the curb. When the driver arrived he stopped to unload in the street. I thought it was weird because I have a wide circle drive that would have made everything so much easier. He was cool about it and even dropped everything in the yard where I asked. Stupid question: Why does the sales order ask for specific delivery instructions if the only option is curb side? I did request the pallets be dropped beside my garage and I made sure there was enough room to maneuver in the yard. I was very pleased with the service and will order again.

Usually it all about time on site and public liability. . I have delivered sheets of Gyprock ( dry wall in the states) and I crane it off onto the property , then they think you have time to help carry sheets under cover. The longer you play around on site the more chance things can go wrong. If people want something other than kerbside, then they must pay for the Time. Standard delivery drivers are on time Schedules, and can't spend time on sites worrying about a customer's problems. Reason a delivery Template has delivery notes is to accommodate more of the pre-arranged and Simple delivery process. And unless organised and EASY access is available , forget about it..

When I was 19, fresh out of trade school, employed by a local construction/ building supply, I was low man on the totem pole, was given the tasks to do what was asked regardless of the items, location, timeframe, equipment available, and most often weather, hand loaded and unloaded and stacked by myself 150 8” three core concrete block in a 3/4 ton dodge pickup, each block was around 45 lbs, that’s nearing 7000 lbs, the truck was way beyond its limit, we had 125lbs of air in the rear tires, and it was like stopping a rail car on wet tracks…200 sheets of 12’-1/2” drywall to a local contractor and stocked in rooms, in the double packs, on a 20’ flatbed…sometimes 2 loads a day, hand unloaded….new and remodel projects, over bridges that were 5 ton rated, up to 75 miles one way…no regard for weights then, if it fit on those old trucks, it was good to go, the one load that tipped the scales was cvt (commercial vinyl tile), 35 lb. cartons, 850 cartons on an 8 ton truck, near 30,000 lbs. hand loaded, went 50’ and the springs fractured, (just doing what I was told was required), unloaded that onto an even older truck and went on my way…today that sort of behavior would never be considered nor undertaken, this was typical and occurred year round…I occasionally could get help, but the help never would be there for load 3…..worked there till I was gm and a corporate officer…

I also do HIAB work in the U.K. Relief driver rather than permanent. The delivery sheet states kerbside delivery in a safe place. I try to help if the customer is pleasant but some demand the impossible. We have a waiver sheet which customer has to sign and states that anything other than kerbside delivery is at driver’s discretion, is the responsibility of the customer and the customer is liable for any damage to the load, the truck and any property (for example, any drains under a driveway). Most often, when an awkward customer reads it, he/she agrees to kerbside delivery only!

Personally, I would come prepared with a liability waiver. Tell them that you only do curbside delivery. That if they want it delivered to their garage, they have to sign the waiver first. It would probably head off a lot of head ache.

Someone "tried" to steal my rig but didn't make it one block, they tried to cut a tight right turn and and the trailer got hung up on the curb and they bailed. So sometimes the claims will be dropped but sometimes customers don't care either way they just want their property fixed or redone at someone else's expense and the shipper will Make us pay for it even with their waiver signed with the customer.
